My mom gets the "tom cruise cake" every year also. My dad (who was a police officer) helped with security for Tom Cruise during one of his films in Louisiana. My dad became great friends with him. When my dad was killed in the Line of Duty 6 years ago...Tom Cruise set my mother flowers and a hand written letter with condolence. He's such a great guy.

It's from a small family business in Los Angeles. The owner's son said that Tom orders like 100 cakes every year and some more during the year and they cost like 100 dollars and that his orders have kept them in business especially during this pandemic.

Tom Cruise gets his cakes from Doan’s Bakery in my neighborhood. It is an totally understated small shop that has been here forever. Yesterday I went there to get a cake and saw a huge flower basket displayed on their counter. It was from Tom Cruise for the holidays. Classy.

Cruise explained why he started this thing about sending people great cakes. He, himself, LOVES cake, but won't eat it because he sticks to healthy eating including no sugar. SO, he sends cakes to other people so that he can enjoy the cake vicariously. I think Cruise explained it when he was on the James Corden show. Corden mentioned that the morning of the day he was to emcee the Tony Awards, there was a knock on his hotel room door, and he took delivery of an incredibly terrific cake from Tom Cruise.
Not surprising. His mother used chocolate cake to get him to climb down from tall trees, etc when he was a very, small child. She never panicked or screamed, just used cake to get him to come down.

I bet that the Fruit Cake Lady is Toms inspiration. Because, one he met her, and two she made cakes for everyone. She was Truman Capote’s Aunt and her cake making prowess is described in Capote’s delightful “A Christmas Story”. In the story she and then six year old Capote save pennies all year for ingredients, make dozens and dozens of fruit cakes and give them all away as Christmas presents. Her cake list included family, a friendly bus driver who waved at them, the President of the United States, etc.etc.
