I feel like it's less about the type of content and moreso how you approach the content. The Spiffing Brit is a good example of an edited, guidelike format on how to abuse game mechanics. While it's a guide, he has a personality or at least a character he portrays that keeps people coming back. TotalBiscuit (RIP) and Jim Sterling both provided/provide news coverage and criticism but again with a personality/character behind it. You learn something but you're also entertained and it's easy to like (or hate) the personality. VSauce provides educational content on science, yet despite being in computer science I'll watch anything Michael releases even if it's about chemistry or biology because he's entertaining. Michael Reeves videos are about engineering with a touch of software development, yet he has mass appeal even to those with no background because his videos focus on his personality as well as his incredibly cool creations.
Your guides are great. They're well edited and they're informative but they tell your viewers nothing about you as a person and give them zero reason to come back unless they want further information. Producing content like this simply makes you Google in a better format, nobody Googles subjects they're not interested in. You need to introduce a bit of your personality into the guides if you want to hook people onto you and not onto the content you're providing.
I read an old Reddit post today that was extremely long and detailed tips about Divinity 2, I would normally have noped out of a wall of text after #5 but I read the entire thing and wanted more because the author added humour throughout the guide.

It's rare to find entertaining RS3 channels with original content. With that said, yesterday I found a channel that's doing a series in a similar fashion to j1mmy's by release, where he compares OSRS vs RS3 through quests, and I found it to be really refreshing as far as RS3 content goes. The channel is Marcus Hooper if you're interested.

Man, this really was interesting getting another opinion on this, I have recently found a little more traction, I'm guessing becoming a partner helped with that though. I'm finding myself becoming increasingly nervous the more traction I get because as you said yourself, it is super easy to kill your own channel by switching niches too aggressively. I guess I'll just continue to upload other games like I currently am, that way at least people are subbing with the knowledge that I actively play/upload on other games. I think this video was really helpful for people that are thinking about getting into content creation. My niche is the dark souls series and games like it. I was thinking about getting into content creation a little closer to the release of elden ring but was just tossing around the idea. Luckily the dark souls community is a little more widespread and cover multiple games in the series and a couple others so i figured it would be a little easier. Glad you released this though. Gives me a good idea on what works and what dont and kind of what to expect.

Sounds a lot like RTGame. He built his channel on TF2 and became so imbedded into that that his viewerbase literally chastised him for wanting to do other content. It took him a few years before he finally got the courage to do variety gaming. He's now iirc 10 years into the industry, and is honestly terrified to even do the same game twice because of his experience with TF2. Even saying on stream and YT that he wants to play certain games more, but he doesn't want to lose his variety crowd even though he'll still plan to do random games.

Good video. I agree that content creators are screwed in the long haul. They work SOOO hard to get a following. Just so that their game can die or they get tired of it and want to move on but they cant because their viewers only want one thing. I find the best way to branch out is talking videos, like this. I have gaming youtubers who mostly just talk about games that I watch. But I wont watch my other gaming youtubers if they are playing some game I dont care about. But anyone can be interested if its an interesting topic instead of just playing a diff game. Example's: The Act Man talking about why a game failed, or Drift0r talking about some weird world issue instead of playing call of duty. Just my 2c as a type C viewer who randomly clicked this on the side haha.

I love guide videos, even though I am maxed with 11 120's and 3 200m.I don't necessarily pay 100% attention to everything in the videos, I think it's more a familiar voice or attitude you have on your videos that keeps me here( and the auto play feature). I love videos by Thoughty2, nileRed and many more, but there is one RS creator I can't watch and it starts with a Man and ends in a tee.
Anyway ramble over, keep up the videos. I would not be against other content on this page if it came up on the next video. I don't think I would go searching for it. but would watch it.

I say branch off man. People have the ability to not click on a video if they don’t enjoy the game. Out of any tutorials I’ve watched on RUclips for gameplay or tutorials. You’re videos are easy, clear and also the imagery you use for it is very good. I suggest you stick to one RUclips channel, grow it, then when you are able to maybe take 1/3
Of your subs to another channel then that specific one can be a niche. RS3 is still my fav but for any RUclipsr on RS I think you will plateau cause it’s only a certain amount of players.

I am still to test the water and upload something else but with my progress series coming to an end I would like to expand on what I upload. I feel being a runescape only content creator helps you gain discoverability compared to playing a more popular / saturated game however your overall growth ceiling is lower once you get discovered you might top out at 50-60k subs rather than hitting 500k-1m I think it’s even more true with streaming on twitch much easier to get a base audience however growing it from 20-30 viewers to over 100 is a lot more difficult

With RUclipsrs, people either subscribe to the personality (essentially create any video you want as long as that personality is present). The second is specific content such as runescape 3 guides.
An example of game switching successfully being an example is AliA. He was originally a Cod RUclipsr that turned to pokemon then to fortnite.
Being in a niche market such rs3 is hard because its well, niche. Modern warfare is booming right now (iv seen channels go from 10k subs to 300k subs in less than 2 weeks) and I wouldn't mind seeing some warzone or some 2v2 gunfights if that's how you want to switch things up.

I've seen it happen during the golden age of 'Five Nights at Freddy's'. Lots of channels grew, but the 'moment' they tried to branch out (for they began to become desperate for new content to play and turned to even the worst quality fan-games) and tried to play different games, the views just completely dropped.... plummeting off of a cliff.
It's good for the short term, cause you'll indeed be pumping out content that your subs will almost certainly like, but at the same time you're running the risk of burning out.
If you want to switch games, and you'll suddenly be faced with the 'reality' of the massive decrease in videos, it can mentally break content creators. Unfortunately can't name any examples, but I do remember hearing about it.

Hopefully I have gotten on top of this problem from the beginning. While my main series gets far more views the alternating pattern of videos sets expectations for when videos most likely will be coming out and allows me more variety. I was never going to try to make a video for the same series every day since that would have quickly lead to burnout for me. Overall it's going pretty well.

But realistically, you should try to think of your channel more as a business that has much more to offer than just Runescape content and in particular, you yourself are a brand that you should utilize. If You are the magic component that makes the gameplay and content enjoyable to watch then it doesn’t matter so much what the content is, I think. My own preference is to watch the streamers that are actually having fun. Feeling pinned down to one game can obviously lead to some serious burnout and we all know how RS is with that grind.

Honestly I love my job and worked very hard to get where i am in my field. If i make videos, its for fun or to be informative, Even if i became the next pewdiepie id still go to my shop everyday and do my job. I want to turn my small shop into a brand at some point. If im making money from youtube its going towards advancing me in my actual business not towards getting a sick 9000 dollar gaming pc, 4000 dollar chair, 1000 dollar headset and 15k dollars in random other shit just to make me look cooler to viewers.
I think upload what you want if it's what you enjoy and you're actually entertaining people will come wherever you are. I think 'neebs gaming' is a perfect example they upload videos of 12 different games and get millions of views per month because they are naturally entertaining and make the content fun to watch. Or how about logdotzip (a famous minecraft youtuber) he started as a runescape youtuber before switching he's created a brand by switching his entire niche.
I still love rs3 but no one in this day and age is going to go far uploading solely rs3. I personally planned on uploading a mix of both bc i play and enjoy both and i think giving your audience the decision to choose what you upload is bad. Its your channel and if they dislike something let them decide after theyve seen it

If you’re asking your current audience if you can upload whatever videos that YOU want to upload then what’s the point of RUclips anyway?
Unless of course you started this journey with the initial intention of making money off of the platform then I guess it becomes paramount to stick to what your current audience wants to see.
In a way uploading something different is like startling all over because even if you have 20k subs or 0 subs, the new videos are directed entirely at a new audience. And the ones that actually like you as a persona will stick to watching your new videos. But even then if it doesn’t interest them, they’ll slowly fade away as well.
    Get what I’m swinging?

The main problem is that the majority of your subs are only used to one game and it is our fault tbh. If you wouldn't upload consistently Runescape videos and would combine it with other games as well no matter how much bad critic you'd get after all they'd just accept it. Just look at my latest video lmfao x) it isssss what it isssss

True. By the way I like your non dark orbit videos, idk I just do. You were forced to change your niche by getting perma banned which might of been even harder because you had to change instantly. :/

I only watch protoxx gaming for his fortnite videos and skip all the runescape ones and considering he doesn’t upload fortnite videos I just don’t watch his videos at all. All I do is comment on them and report them

You play for fun not money so stop crying that you can upload other content. When you upload for money your doing it wrong.

Exactly. This is why I never do series because I hate doing them despite series doing so well in views. I also quit streaming because I didn't like it.

Or you could just be an attractive female and make RUclips videos about what you do everyday... Takes a lot less effort and makes a lot more money
