It's because of the buttons for opening the roof. You would have to place your arm uncomfortably to be able to use the "new touchpad", since the buttons for opening are directly behind it.

I'm right now watching a Mercedes FASCINATION DVD with the W123 featured. Just saw a program on TV couple of nights ago that restored a 300TD (the W123 station wagon/estate wagon). Many consider the 123 to be one of the best MB cars ever made - production ended around 1985 or 86, if I recall. Respect!
I really hate the concept of making basics an "Addon Extra" and confusing naming to give higher expectations. My A Class Sedan has no rear vents, i need to step up for that. Same goes for the rear handrest (despite having seat comfort package). I have keyless go package, but no boot open because it is on keyless go comfort package. Overall bad experience, provide transparency for better experience

Some of the functions are redundant. You can control from steering wheel, touch screen or with the console controls.
