At about 5:10 you dont need to ration food. It should be the priority of every dayz player to keep hunger and thirst bars as high as possible to avoid having to eat in combat situations. Also higher food and water stat means higer immunity so you wont get the cold, however if your food and water are at yellow being too cold could result in a cold. Its also a good idea not to ration because you are wasting valuable inventory space with food, which you can find everywhere when you go just a bit inland which makes the whole rationing part pointless. So in short eat your food and drink til full at your nearest water station.
Guy: dont carry a lot of stuff or hoard with a big backpack, this is a common mistake. Also him: carry two premade splints and use protective cases for your medical supplies. You should also make sure to have a gas mask in your inventory at all times on the off chance somebody has a gas grenade. Don't eat food unless you're hungry.
I’m still a newbie despite owning the game for a while and someone taught me that you can build a fire starter with a piece of bark and a stick if you don’t have a lighter/matches/flare etc. Dude is a life saver.

To keep a splint taking up 8 spaces in inventory (with the exception of exploring Livonia’s Bunker) is a horrible “pro tip” for unknown players. When in a situation of a broken leg you either fell from a dangerous height, got yourself in a bear trap or a mine or got the leg broken in a fight.
