- A preferred strategy amongst many is to invest in companies which have an evolving business model and a long growth runway. In other words most investors favour investing in midcap companies. Now there are three ways to do this
The first option is for one to research i.e. do your fundamental analysis, do your technical analysis if you understand it and then invest
Secondly, one can engage the services of a fund manager and invest via an actively managed midcap mutual fund or a PMS
And option number 3 is the passive style of investing wherein one can invest via a midcap index fund
In this video, we shall focus more on that third option and examine the Nifty Midcap 150 Index in greater details, as we study it’s construct, the companies that make up the index, the sectoral composition, it’s valuation and how the Midcap 150 has performed against different indices
► CONSTRUCT OF NIFTY MIDCAP 150 INDEX
The Nifty Midcap 150 Index consists of 150 companies. These companies are ranked between 101 and 250 in the Nifty 500 index and this ranking is based on the company’s full market capitalization.
► WEIGHTAGE OF COMPANIES AND SECTORS
When it comes to the Nifty Midcap 150 the companies that are selected to be a part of it depend on their full market capitalization. However those same company’s weightage in the Midcap 150 index depends on their free-float market cap
Another interesting point to note is that the midcap index is a very moving index, some companies which are doing well will move out of this index into the bigger Nifty 100 index over time and likewise some of the poor performing ones will move to the small cap index
This way there is a leaky bucket from both ends which should really not bother as investor as long as he or she has a smartly distributed asset-allocated portfolio
► PERFORMANCE
Like any equity based investment, the midcap 150 index has had periods of ups and downs but nevertheless, the index has given excellent returns over the long run
Risk and return almost never move in a linear fashion and this difference in midcap and smallcap performance is proof of that. The second comparison is on how the Midcap 150 index has performed in comparison to actively managed mid-cap funds. Now, we have already established that the Nifty Midcap 150 TRI has generated returns of a little over 15% in these last 15 years
This number does not include an expense ratio and since, we don’t have a long performing midcap index fund we’ll take a call and setup a charge of 0.5% in our estimates towards expenses
► SUMMARY
Now, the simplest way to invest in the NIFTY Midcap 150 Index is to choose an index fund or ETF that tracks this index

• ICICI PRUDENTIAL MIDCAP 150 INDEX FUND

Could you do an analysis btw Nifty midcap 150, midcap 50 & nifty next 50 index, please
?
Fantastic analysis, presentation and information....
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
Super clarity!!
Thanks
The video is a good start. I wish the video emphasized Midcap in general and not one index of that space. For example very little was said about Nifty Midcap 50 and Nifty Midcap 100, Also I would have liked to see more about the methodology of index construction, frequency of it rebalance, turnover ratio, etc. Bottom line some wanting to learn/understand about midcap should come away with much more information.
Woh ❤️❣️
Interesting presentation.. Kudos to the team.
Thanks a lot
Fantastic as always 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent!! Which fund house performing good in nifty mid cap funds. Pls confirm

Hello@ETMoney can you pls make a video on nifty next 50 vs nifty midcap 150
As usual an useful information, presented very nicely. One question whether we can start in the current situation when the market stared falling?
Thank you
Very well explained
Thanks for liking
Thankyou
Most welcome
Hey Shankar .. 10/10 over presentation as usual. I like the diversity being provided by Midcap 150 but my worry is a huge tracking error due to impact cost seen in midcap stocks. With no history available as the passive midcap 150 is in nascent stage .. what kinda tracking error you anticipate?
Thank you very much. Personally, I don't bother with it
But it's a good point you raise because very recently I was on a Zoom call and some young investors on the other side assumed that a tracking error means negative performance. It took me a while to explain that tracking error merely describes the size of the difference in relative returns and not whether it was positive or negative.
On my part, my apathy towards tracking error is on account of the balancing out of positive and negative differences and maybe because all my index investments follow an SIP route. However if I any literature on this, I'll update to this message thread. Hope that works.

Tracking error may lead to positive better returns as well.
Motilal Oswal midcap 150 index fund tracking error is low

"ICICI PRUDENTIAL MIDCAP FUND DIRECT GROWTH"
I want to start a SIP in it for 10-12 years for wealth creation purposes? Will it be a good choice?
Thanks for making a very good & an insightful video.
Want to invest 3Lakhs Lum-sum & what should ideal percentage dip in the Nifty Midcap 150 Index to take 6 entries each of 50K. Plz suggest
Always do SIP. No lumpsum
Sir, Can you make a video on "Nifty Midcap 150 Momentum 50 Index Funds" - trying to understand if these funds are better than the "Nifty Midcap 150 Index Funds". There are also Insurance products linked with such funds ( Eg. Max Life New Mid Cap Fund). Are they better as we get the investing returns as per the index performance + insurance?
Good presentation
Thanks
Sir I am new to this field can you please tell me do we have to pay any extra amount to this et money app if we invest through this app
Very insightful indeed! Shankar, please do advise if we should go the lump-sum way or the SIP way if we had about 10 lakhs to invest during this market corrections?
As you mentioned about the nifty Axis mid cap, can i invest 10 lakhs as a lump-sum or go the SIP route? An early reply will be highly appreciated... Thank you :)

Fantastic overview..what are your thoughts on 50 :50 weightage in nifty 100 and nifty midcap 150 index thru edelweiss large and midcap index fund??
Never examined it but looks like it covers all the bases.. the top 250 companies
Tracking error is huge and fund size is low.. instead go for motilal oswal midcap 150 index fund
I am not able to find the 'Subscribe' button.
I have hdfc midcap opportunity fund
Should i add nifty 150 midcap in my portfolio as well ?
Can we have both passive and active fund for midcap?
Thanks for making a great video.
Which is a better performing index b/w Nifty Next 50 & Nifty Midcap 150?
Plz make a comparison video Sir
Thanks. The values keep changing everyday so video based updation is not possible. You can check this yourself on the NSE website - that's what I do.
Thanks Sir

And
Smallcap 250 index Fund vs smallcap 50 index fund

I recently invest in UTI Nifty 150 Quality 50 Index Fund , Direct(G). I will hold it for long-term. Is it good.
Is Midcap 150 quality 50 index better than normal Midcap 150? If so then on what basis?
Good video. If someone has Axis Midcap running SIP, should he shift to Passive Nifty 150 Midcap Index fund ?
Thank you. Everything need not be a replacement. If you are happy with Axis Midcap, then why not simply start your next midcap SIP in the index fund whenever you are comfortable doing it
@@ETMONEY Thanks for the reply. Also if you could please make a video on the recent allegations of front running in Axis Mutual Funds and how & if they will affect retail investors. Should they continue their SIPs in other axis funds such as Bluechip / Midcap etc
@@ETMONEY I have hdfc midcap opportunity fund
Should i add a nifty 150 midcap in my portfolio as well ?
Can we have both passive and active funds for midcap in our portfolio is it normal ?
One thing I would like to see is to performance adjusted for inflation. In the video it talks about 15% annualized return. That sounds great but when considering inflation it will probably fall down to 7-8%. In this regard is there a phantom stock/index to track inflation. This way we can see the growth of the phantom stock in comparison to Nifty Midcap 150. Such a phantom stock/index will be very helpful and ideally this should be one that is defined and managed by orgs such as NSE, etc. Until such time ETMoney can construct its own ticker to do this job
No index/fund in the world gives you inflation adjusted return numbers. It's an absurd thing to ask for in the first place.
@@tathagatasinharoy3332 Could you elaborate on why it is not relevant?
if one is investing in Index Funds of any given fund house: What happens to the Dividend Recieved by the Fund House for holding the Stocks.. Does the received dividend get added as part of the NAV?
Yes
If it's a growth fund dividend would be reinvested and added to NAV.
So that why we are comparing with TRI
I have PGIM india midcap opportunity fund, ranked quite well on ET money score card, any advice if one should move to the passive index
i have moved from the same to Navi Midcap Index.. Jus due to their poor performance in 2023.. But think and decide.. i am a lot relieved now due to this switch though i may lose little Alpha
Sir have been doing SIP in followings , can you please evaluate these ? Any changes needed ?
Parag perik flex cap -1000rs
Axis bluechip- 1000rs
Axis midcap -1000rs
SBI - small cap fund-1000rs
Don't invest in an active large cap fund. Instead put it on a large cap index like nifty 50 or sensex.
Very good video
So in 150 companies atleast 15 company need to outperform to give good returns 😐
I want to invest in the bear market in sip format and want to sell it when market recovers , which one should i choose from between active fund or an index fund?
Pls watch the video on Active vs Index funds on our channel
Go for AXIS NIFTY 100 index fund
👍
Hello Team etmoney.. How much percentage of nifty 50, next 50 & nifty midcap 150 should I keep in my portfolio for 20+ years sip ? Need maximum cagr return with high risk..
Please reply..
Hi. Please check out ETMoney Genius. It works on this very concept.
hello prakash sir, did you find the solution for ur query, as I'm also in the same strategy as you, investing in nifty 50, next 50, and nifty midcap 150 (direct, growth index funds). as i also want to keep it for more than 20 years, even longer than that as I'm in my early 20's and planning to sip. i also want a higher cagr maybe above 15+, even if it comes with higher risk. also share your exp and insights about index funds in long run. thanks in advance.
About NIFTY Midcap 150 Index Fund
I admire the communication and delivery of the gentleman presenter.
KKAGRAWAL
Wondering if ETMoney has similar videos on other NSE indices e.g. Nifty Smallcap, Nifty Microcap, etc. What about Bond indices, an area that seems to be completely ignored in discussions.
Could you please make a video on Nifty smallcap 250. Does it make any sense to invest in the same ?
Will try! We do have a video on small caps where we show 2 techniques to see if it is the right time to invest or not. Have a look
@@ETMONEY Yes, I have gone through that video. I was bit confused if we could invest in the smallcap 250 index. Since there are a lot of companies in the smallcap index and all of them could not be a top performer. We have seen actively managing funds where they have delivered excellent returns upto 25% CAGR. So does it really make any sense to invest in actively managing funds or smallcap passive funds. If I have this question, I am sure most of the viewers should also have the same question. This can save our money any time if you help us with the same. I tried to search this topic on RUclips but I couldn't find any detailed video, pls think about it if you could be the one to solve this issue.

Why don't you rank Index funds in the application?
Not much to rank. Afterall, all index funds within a category needs to have the same stocks and the same weightage. Only expense ratio and tracking error differs which tend to change very frequently (every month)
@@ETMONEY Should I invest in
OPTION 1: Nifty 50 (UTI), Nifty next 50 (UTI) & midcap 150 quality 50 (UTI) index mutual funds or
OPTION 2: Nifty 50 (UTI), alpha low volatility 30 (ICICI) & midcap 150 quality 50 (UTI) index mutual funds?
The issue I see with Option 1 is all are from the same fund house. I am planning on a monthly SIP rather than lumpsum. I will invest in parag Parik Flexicap & Axis Small Cap after from the index funds.
@@nitmat14 Go for AXIS NIFTY 100 index fund (80%) and rest 20% in Motilal oswal midcap 150
