    Great idea! Especially for Ford owners since they are under the hood a lot. 👍👍

    Looks good. You might want to consider down the road adding either some kind of loom or wrap over the wires. Especially with running them around the latch assembly and thru the structure of the hood. The hood inner structure has sharp edge and could eventually wear thru or cut the coating on the wires and cause a short.
    And if anyone wants the engine bay brighter you can also add a strip under the lip on the firewall where the top cowl panel meets the firewall. It's a good spot to add the strip lights, without them being visible during the day. But will really light up the engine at night.

    That's a pretty cool idea. I always wondered why car's didn't often have this as standard.
    If I were to make a change, I'd actually use an incandescent lamp and have the holder attached to the underside of the hood in a recess, so that it looks more stock/factory fitted.
    But I guess I'm the kind of person who likes things to look understated, and boring.

    Got mine from SuperBrightLEDs also (a lot of choices)... I have mine hooked to an LED rocker switch that I use to turn on the lights. I also have it to where I can disconnect the wire and plug it into a small 12v battery pack for when I am working on something and the car battery needs to be disconnected or removed so I can have the lights anytime. Works great. I work nights, so I'm a night owl and find myself working on my car a lot in the evening hours... I've had them for 3+ years now with no issues. I like the mercury switch idea. I'm thinking of using one of those or a pin (plunger) switch so when I open the hood, the blue LED on my rocker switch turns on revealing the rocker switch. The only question about the mercury switch (I think yours is actually a ball bearing switch) is, will the forward motion of the car activate the switch? that's why I'm thinking a pin (plunger) switch may be a better choice... Right now I have it to where the "switch LED" only turns on with the switch. Not that big of issue. It's not like I can't find the switch without the LED on. Just something to add for the "cool" effect. Thanks for the video and suggestions...

    Awesome job. The only thing I would have done differently is I would have grounded it at the point where you spliced the two together at the latch. That way instead of running two wires down to the body you would have only had to run the positive.

  • @Ottonic6

    I would use a plunger switch they use for hood/trunk alarms... Just a thought.. Nice job!

    You could run some of those lights down the sides of the hood to if you wanted it brighter

    Great idea! I’m curious how the mercury switch works. Is there any chance of it turning on off-roading for instance?

    • @AGearHead4Life
      @AGearHead4Life 3 года назад

      There is, but it’s adjustable to prevent that. Mine flashes on sometimes when I floor it and launch hard. It surprised me at first. I think it was a spark. Lol

    For a few dollars more, hit up F150LEDS for a complete kit that's ultra bright and sweet looking. After putting a set on my 2018 truck, I bought 2 more- one for my Cadillac SRX and for my Avenger. Different colors available and they're universal.

    Regular switch = No battery drain when you have your hood open for 8-10 hours during daylight.

    @tylerhawes5644 2 года назад

    So acceleration might be an issue….. ? Did it trigger the mercury switch ? I think i am going to stick with tried and true keep it simple hood pin that alarm/remote starters use.

    Merc switch nice. I had the same idea only with a plunger switch to ground

    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 3 месяца назад +1

      The mercury switch works well when you raise the hood when your stopped, but they can also be triggered from the inertia of accelerating or braking, as the mercury rolls around in the capsule. A plunger switch is a better option. With either, you still need a separate on/off switch so that a mechanic doesn't leave you hood up for hours and kill your battery.

    • @mattw8809
      @mattw8809 3 месяца назад +1

      @@chrisgraham2904 I didn't want to drill into the car w/a plunger switch, so I affixed a small plastic block (to underhood) to screw the merc switch into. I'm ahead of the curve on that one. LED's can burn for hours using little energy. An underhood by-pass switch was also installed. There's a metal tab that the Merc. switch can be "bent" over on. I adjusted this as so the inertia does,nt make the merc switch wash back during manual shifts triggering the light to come on. The tab can ALSO be bent to "FLASH" Bright white like "Lightning" strikes when shifting at night giving the hot rod a dramatic and intense appearance as she rows the boat down the road. Engine bay and underhood flash bright light for a milli-second bet. shifts

    I got a few questions. I already drawn out my electrical schematic. Now as far as the wiring connections. Did you solder all the connects? How did you insulate them? Tape

    • @Thecraig909
      @Thecraig909  5 лет назад +1

      thurm101 they’re all butt connectors that are crimped together. Then heat shrink over it. Not much heat or water gets close to the wiring

    lol Jerry Rig Everything XD. was thinking of using a push to break switch, when you open the hood it goes on.

  • @chrisgraham2904

    The tilt switch is nice for everyday use, but the additional toggle switch is a good addition. If you leave your vehicle with a mechanic for the day, just turn the lights off completely in case the shop just leaves your hood open all day. Note: That $7 tilt switch from Walmart (U.S.A.) is $45 from Walmart Canada...Ouch!

  • @BBBILLY86

    You can see where the hood bracing is shielding a majority of the illumination. Move the lights outside that pocket and you won't need additional lights.

    LMC Truck Sells A Hood Insulation Kit with Pre Cut Dyna Mat Insulation underlay with A Molded Black Overlay that covers the entire under hood area it lets you hide your wires better more protection and reduces noise. Comes with the Ford LOGO or You can get the one without the Oval Logo Either is 180.00 Plus Shipping not sure because its oversize check it out if you like Other great Stuff for your Truck there as well.
    I am doing one for our 64 Chevy C10 Without the LOGO were going without because it takes on more of A aftermarket look with the logo as there was no huge under hood Bow-tie Logo in 1964 trying to strike A balance between modern and old besides It is in Black I did not ask if it is paintable but there is Plastic Paint if you want it white. Will Spruce it up Significantly as well. I just ordered the Micro Switch thanks for the WALMART Link!

    15 amps is right on the edge for 18 gauge wire. You might want to put a 10 amp or smaller fuse in there. Those LEDs probably won’t even draw one amp anyways. Just to be safe.
