  • Paul Jones was the lead singer for Manfred Mann during the early years of The British Invasion. Paul was a friend of Brian Jones who went on to establish The Rolling Stones. Brian and Paul often performed as a duo. Brian asked Paul to be the lead singer of his new group, but Paul declined. By that time, Paul had become an accomplished singer. Manfred Mann had some success, but struck gold with "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" which was released in July, 1964. The song went to no. 1 in England immediately, and in the United States in October. Paul shares with Tom the story of how Paul created his own path through rock 'n' roll history.

I saw the Manfreds on the Gold Coast at Twin Towns, Coolangatta around 1997. I was seated front and centre (fan boy section) with my 24 year old girlfriend who Paul noticed and to whom he proceeded to hand the microphone to during the Do Wa Diddy audience sing back. My girlfriend chickened out and wouldn’t look up so Paul stopped singing (with the band still playing) and stared her out with the spotlight on both of them for a deliberate uncomfortable amount of time enjoying her embarrassment, smiling all the while. I motioned to Paul that I would do her singing however he didn’t notice me; he only had eyes for her.

Just for interest. In 1965, the Manfred Mann group performed in Bratislava, now the capital of Slovakia. Enthusiastic fans did not want to leave the hall, they vandalized it a bit, so the police had to drive them out with batons. This was one of the first rock concerts, if not the first by a group from the West. Then, as part of the Bratislava Lyra festival Shadows, Cliff Richard, Beach Boys, Easybeats, July Driscoll with Brian Augers Trinity performed, than Tremeloes, later Smokie performed. I really liked Manfred Mann's music and Paul Jones' vocals, I'm glad he's okay.

They had to stick the screaming in every time they got to the last line of the chorus. Obviously, we know why, but I can't recall if it was American or Brit censorship that made it happen. Anyway, he seems like a very cool guy who had a lot of success that I never knew about until today. Thanks, again!
