The greatest moments from the first 8 seasons of the Mark Dantonio era at Michigan State, from 2007-2014. This video is for entertainment purposes only.
As a Michigan fan, I honestly believe he is the best coach in college football. Sure you can argue Meyer and Saban, but Dantonio does what he does with half the talent that those two get. Dantonio will surely go down in history as Michigan State's Bo or Woody. That's a special thing. I really do hope they win a national title soon, just not before Michigan ;)
+KyleJPie10 Thanks for the classy comment. To add to your point, it's so much easier for a coach to succeed when hired by a traditional powerhouse school (Ohio State, UM, Bama, USC, Texas, Florida, etc.) due to top-notch facilities and unlimited resources. Dantonio built MSU from the ground up, cleaning up the garbage that John L. Smith left him. I am so proud of him for staying relentless over the years to bring MSU back to relevancy.
+KyleJPie10 Hate to break it to you, but we'll all die of old age before Michigan wins a national title. They used to be so good-what happened to them?
This is an absolute masterpiece. It shows Dantonio as the prophet. He said what he was going to do, how he was going to do it and then DID IT. I honestly never thought MSU would rise to this level in my lifetime. I figured a Rosebowl when I was 6 was going to be the glory days. Great video, GO GREEN!
Remember that the team he had built and left behind in Cincinnati was a great team. Brian Kelly took over that team, won the MAC title, and went to a bowl. Granted that Kelly is a great coach himself having had great success at GVSU, CMU and Cinnci. However, when he was named the coach at ND, his work at Cinnci with that team did not hurt. So Kelly's ND position was helped to some extent by Dantanio's Cinnci team.
Having been a Spartan fan for 44 years, I still can't believe we're enjoying this kind of success. After the two clowns John L Smith and Bobby Williamson, to turn this program around so fast and do what he's done against the competition he's faced ? No doubt Dantonio deserves a place among the best coaches in the nation. Go Green !
+jcvalenti it's bobby williams not williamson. and while he may not be a great head coach he is still a great recruiter and RB coach. How many heisman trophy winners has he recruited and coached at Alabama now?
Saban left because he felt he couldn't compete in recruiting with big brother Michigan. This is what happens when you stick it out and establish a foundation.I'm an Irish fan, but I just love his attitude. Should be some good sparring with Harbaugh.
So beautiful. As an SMB alumna, my favorite shots have to be the bandos going nuts in Michigan Stadium. Let's do amazing things this year boys! Go Green.
My favorite thing is seeing coach happy. He's an amazing coach and has brought this team far. You know its a good day when he smiles. Dantonio is a great dude.
As a Buckeye fan it's been a great ride watching the transformation of the Spartans over the last decade. Cheers to a great game when you guys come down to the Horseshoe.
How brilliant was that to not only win Big Ten championship in the last seconds of the game (this has become a signature for Spartans) and they did it with absolutely unfailing mental toughness and physical stamina, handing it to the same man every time until he wrestled it over the line. And Scott is a freshman, the foundation for the next four championships! The seniors going out have done their best and we need them to be strong for the Cotton Bowl, but aside from that it is genius to base this victory on the freshman and not the ones leaving us soon. Don't get me wrong--the whole team wins when its a win--but the figurehead of this was a freshman. A Spartan freshman offense is stronger than a whole line of Iowa defense, and Iowa defense is formidable! Alabama should be afraid to get comfortable any time during the final game, because look what MSU has done over and over again--with their freshmen! This has been the most exciting year to be a Spartan, absolutely, and I was on campus for the 1974 victory over Woody Hayes. Thank you Spartans, players and coaches for representing us so well! And what a great foundation for the coming year! Now that is not just success, that is genius!
I don't even care that Alabama blew us out, I am so proud of where my Spartans are today. I remember sitting through years and years of horrible MSU teams, and I am amazed how quickly Mark Dantonio has turned this program around. I tip my hat to you Mark! Keep making Spartan nation proud!
Any one who doesn’t know how good a coach Danton had to be to transform Michigan State into a big ten and national contender. with the talent and resources he was given. doesn’t understand football.
Coach Dantonio has a lot to do with the great defenses of the Buckeyes in the early 2000s & he helped us get the title in 02. He maybe up north but we respect the hell out of him. GO BUCKS!
I honestly feel that Larry Caper could have been an all time great at Michigan State if he hadn't been marred by injuries. That OT touchdown run against Michigan will always be a memory of mine in terms of MSU football. Was at that game, I swear that stadium was literally shaking when that happened.
I met Coach a couple of times...spoke w him, we laughed at his dry humor. Was there when Bates tossed that td on ND. 🤓👍 We Are Spartan Nation! Go Green!
I watched this in 2022 and it makes me appreciate coach D that much more and the memories of his era are the same years I raised my kids , going to games my kids going to the football camps the youth clinics and everything else we did as Spartan fans . I'll never forget these times but now with coach Tucker we're going even further but coach D showed we belong amongst the elite
Hmm ... I'm all for keeping a 🏆 trophy or 🥇 medallion as a reward for the winning team in this great intrastate rivalry, but the one we have is misnamed. Paul Bunyan is NOT a Michigan myth. Never was. He is a Minnesota legend, along with his blue oxen 🐂 Babe and the ten thousand lakes they left behind - in that region. Perhaps that's why this trophy was initially neglected for so many years - the exploits, real or imagined, surrounding a prodigious lumberjack and his colorful beast of burden were simply not a piece of Michigan folklore. Although the lumber trade WAS a staple of this state's economy for a century plus back in the day. So maybe a tertiary connection, at best. Sort of like, I suppose, how Bob Ufer used to refer to Bo Schembeclhler as George Patton, when the title actually belonged to his mentor Woody Hayes. So this may sound like a cranky argument or a matter of semantics. What about, say, re-naming the award after Longfellow's poem Hiawatha (by the shores of Gichiigumee, no less). That would seem more fitting. Or maybe the 8 Mile Road Trophy, for all you Eminem post-modern hipsters. At least he's more authentically Michigan than Bunyan. Dunno. I guess we're stuck with it. 🤔
Addendum: the naming of the trophy may stem from a confluence of Biggie Munn's tenure and the Michigan lumber industry, as mentioned above. By '53, Munn was in his last year as head coach before making his way to AD, as Duffy took over the on-field reins the following year. And, as he was still relatively fresh off the '52 national title and as one of Crisler's former top assistants in Ann Arbor, Munn had clout. Plus, he was a native Minnesotan - played for Bernie Biermann on three nat'l champion teams in Minneapolis - who avidly hunted and fished in the wilds of his native state. I didn't know anything about this trophy until '78 - few did - when the Spartans knocked off the Wolverines for the first time in some years ('69 ?). Somebody had placed a green & white helmet over Bunyan's head in the locker room and interest was revived. Which is how trophy games REALLY begin - a huge upset/unexpected or statement win followed by the claiming of a memento or spoil to honor the event. Rah ! 😊
Well done video had not scene it before today! Coach D was so in touch with what Spartans across the years felt and needed. He got tough young men and coached them up. His teams played their hearts out and the memories they created will never be forgotten!! They played with pride! Much love and appreciation for Coach D! Go Green!
Hey, to the guy that made this Video originally. September 2016 I expect a BIGGER stick video. This year was filled with Drama and close calls and amazing plays. Need some of them Highlights here.
are we screwed for next year? we're losing cook, burb, scott, and langford... all very crucial players. not to mention that three of our recruits just dropped out from the roster...
nah fam we got le'veon esque LJ Scott (true freshman), Damion terry (sophmore), Connor cook esque Tyler O'Connor (junior), and we got some true freshman on defense that were put in by emergency and although they didn't look too good that'll be an irreplaceable experience for their development as a lockdown secondary in their futures, the spartan flame will not go away, javon ringer passed the flame to Edwin Baker who passed it to le'veon bell who passed it to Jeremy Langford. BJ Cunningham passed it to Keith mumphry who passed it to tony lippet and now its at Aaron burbridge. and so on and so forth, sparty will live on. because like we showed at the big ten championship 2013, like we went on to take the west coast version of ourselves in Stanford and won, like we came from behind against a prolific Baylor team that torched us all game but couldn't do it when it counted, we've faced all the doubters and all the people who counted us out. no matter who is catching passes or is throwing them or taking the ball up the middle and hitting game winning field goals or enforcing no fly zones and stuffing the run. #spartanswill. always and forever. long live Marky D
+whatIsThis Langford graduated last year and LJ is only a freshman. We have Dantonio's best recruiting class ever coming in next year stocked with three big bodied 4 star receivers. MSU will be fine.
Such a damn good coach. His record against top 5 teams speaks for itself
As a Michigan fan, I honestly believe he is the best coach in college football. Sure you can argue Meyer and Saban, but Dantonio does what he does with half the talent that those two get. +Fred Jones couldn't agree more with your comment.
A michigan fan with a legit comment? Thats odd. But really, thanks for the comment bro, it shows that you have an open mind to this.
+KyleJPie10 Hate to break it to you, but we'll all die of old age before Michigan wins a national title. They used to be so good-what happened to them?
Frank Johanson They're looking a heck of a lot better than Michigan State at this point.
Legendary coach!! Always brought it no matter what
How could we Spartan Nation NOT RESPECT Mark Dantonio!!!
awesome
Sparty On!
Lol Google translate is funny
Should I call my doctor if I have had an erection for the last 14 minutes?
No, it think its normal. or we are both weird.
"I don't care about Notre Dame, I care about Spartans thanks" Greatest quote ever! Go Green

Nick Saban said that he thinks Dantonio is a fantastic coach. He said Dantonio is doing what he couldn't do.
MSUAndyHRCMB you are a saint and I will seriously tell my kids about my favorite RUclips hero
Great video.......Michigan State has probably won more conference games in the Dantonio era than any other Big 10 team.
GO GREEN GO WHITE GO STATE
So beautiful. As an SMB alumna, my favorite shots have to be the bandos going nuts in Michigan Stadium. Let's do amazing things this year boys! Go Green.
Full circle man. still the goat coach in our history but today was the last of his career

i hope so. i just recently got on the msu football bandwagon. i'd hate to see msu start losing
+whatIsThis Lest we forget, when Kirk Cousins left, they were left for nothing at QB...according to that other team. Coach D knows how to coach em up.
+whatIsThis Langford graduated last year and LJ is only a freshman. We have Dantonio's best recruiting class ever coming in next year stocked with three big bodied 4 star receivers. MSU will be fine.
