About to BREAK UP After Spending 1 Million on Record They HATED…Band Wrote an Opus-Professor of Rock

  • They spent roughly a million dollars making an album that should have been the biggest of its time. However, after the better part of a year, this band, Foo Fighters threw it all away… They completely scrapped the record. No one in the band liked the finished tracks, which Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins dubbed them the “Million Dollar Demos.” Even worse, all four band members were all at each others’ throats. In-fighting was on the verge of fist-fighting. Three albums into their career, they were done. Or so it seemed. With their frontman touring with another band, but somehow they found their mojo and recorded 14 new songs in a matter of days… Including today’s iconic ‘never say die” hit single, Times Like These...This song turned everything around for this band as they stared down the crossroads. It’s a story of near disaster and unexpected miracles…and how the song has a whole new meaning now… the story is NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you remember staying up late to catch friday night videos in the good old 80s you’re going to dig this channel of pure musical nostalgia. Make sure to, subscribe below right now. I know you’ll dig this channel. We also have a patreon you'll want to check out. There you’ll find an additional catalog of exclusive content and you can even become an honorary producer to help us curate this music history.
So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, changing musical tastes, or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. On previous episodes we have covered Buddy Holly by Weezer, Zombie by The Cranberries, My Friends by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
So today’s track’s chart position I’m chalking up to sheer stupidity. Let’s just say it didn’t even come close to #1. But that’s not at all on the band. Rather, it was just the state of popular music was at the time. Even so, this song, is a no-brainer #1… Since it’s inception, it has inspired listeners to fight through adversity and has instilled hope in all who hear it. . From one of the biggest rock bands still out there, and still going strong… It’s Times Like These by Foo Fighters. So after coming home from touring their third album There Is Nothing Left To Lose in early 2001, Foo Fighters were already looking ahead to their next record. For reference, at this time Foo Fighters consisted of multi-instrumentalist frontman Dave Grohl, bassist Nate Mendel, drummer Taylor Hawkins, and newcomer guitarist Chris Schiflett.
As the year progressed, the band made some headway on their fourth album, writing new music and recording demos… however, by late summer the Foos hit the skids when a catastrophic blow almost took out Hawkins. After playing the V Festival in the UK, the legendary drummer was hospitalized after an alleged heroin overdose. Taylor went comatose for two days. Said Hawkins, “I was partying in London one night, and I mistakenly did something and it changed everything… I just got out of control for a while and it almost got me.”

I like Grohl and the FF a lot... but no, he hasn't... at least not single handedly. He's certainly been the biggest mainstream artist to keep rock and roll alive, but it's always existed (and always will) in garages and dive bars, being played by bands who never "make it" because the US music industry is completely ignorant of what good music really is. They only recognise greatness when guys like Dave Grohl refuse to give up and and keep punching through to the point where record company and radio station executives can't ignore them anymore. Dave certainly deserves his due, but so do all the "little guys" that few people outside of their hometowns ever hear.

"Song for the Deaf" is the third album from Queens of the Stone Age, not their first. It was, however, their big commercial break though. Their self titled debut was largely ignored outside of the stoner rock underground, while their second album had a minor radio hit with the song "The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret."

Taylor's death still feels so raw and fresh. Sometimes I think it was a bad practical joke being played on the world and Taylor will pop up with that goofy grin and scream "GOTCHA SUCKA!!!" Taylor's death is on par with the death of John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. It was monumental and just as huge as Taylor's death. And both meant the same to their respective bands.
That is way I was sure after Taylor's death it was over for Foo Fighters. It just felt the same with a band that was as bonded as Zep was with each other. Losing one was like losing a brother.

It seems to me in America certain bands such as the foo's come across more passionate than certain bands in the UK more hardworking when the chip's are down they are scared of failure and don't want to throw the towel in .I think it's an American cultural thing of we stick together and I'm glad because in 2015 I got to see them at Milton Keynes bowel with Dave in a chair ,it was incredible the best rock concert I've ever seen. They never say die. Some British bands just argue and sue and and only get back together for money. I think the foo's get stronger through adversaty the only British bands .R.I.P TAYLOR HAWKINS

I just saw the Foos this past weekend at the Sea Hear Now Festival in Asbury Park, NJ. It was my daughter (23 years old) to see them, and they were great as usual, never heard any reports of them taking a night off when they do a show.
The most emotional version I have seen was when they opened their show at Madison Square Garden on Father's Day 2021. It was the first concert at MSG in over two years, and it was just Dave and Rami. Dave broke down twice during the song, but once the rest of the band came in you knew that everything was going to be ok, and that we would put the pandemic behind us and to start to live again.
Also a great cover was during the pandemic by the Live Lounge Allstars on BBC Radio, that included Dave and Taylor.

The idea of Foo breaking up isn’t reality. Foo isn’t, and has never been a band. It will go on for how long Dave wants it to. It can’t be a band when one “member” has absolute power. Can you see them break up and the bass player start up his own version and call it Foo like Ratt or Great White 😂. It’s still good music and a fun “band” to watch, but it’s the Dave Grohl project.

Still, Dave is a survivor, a storyteller, a brilliant songwriter, and a phenomenal musician. All of us are blessed to have him be a part of our lives. I have been saying for years that Dave Grohl is one of the few guys who legitimately saved Rock and Roll in the United States, and carried it from the 90's into the 00's and from the 00's into the 10's. In the early 2000s the genre was not really saying anything. Dave Grohl carried rock into the new millennium like few others did. Corey Taylor also comes to mind but not many others.

Dave Grohl played drums for Tom Petty on Saturday Night Live before he fully went in on Foo Fighters in 1994. This was way before the Queens of the Stone Age gig. Dave was then offered to be Tom Petty's drummer and he was at a cross roads as to either go with a known artist or go with his "side project" Foo Fighters.
He opted to gamble on himself. The rest is history.
