How to Paint Basic Faux Carrara Marble - Scenic Art

- As always, there are many ways to go about painting faux marble, but in this video I'll show a pretty basic way you can create carrara marble with basic tools like water and a natural sponge.
I used a white craft paint, and mixed the colors with Rosco Supersats.

I want to add to this as I always apply sealer with a roller. Use a foam roller when applying sealer/varnish/lacquer. Foam rollers will at the most leave a powder coat effect and that's if you press the roller into your painting/whatever surface you're applying it to. Which I advice against doing. I always roll it on with the weight of the roller, before finalizing with some slow strokes that barely touch the surface. Always leaves a glossy finish
You're absolutely right, that is a great way to create a nice glossy finish without brush strokes. I also like to sometimes put the sealer through a sprayer, depending on the kind, which also creates a nice finish!
I did a similar faux Finnish on a piece of furniture I found on the side of the road. It turned out really good. I always wanted to do another piece like the one in the demo. Perhaps some gold leaf vanes and some black translucent Acrylic paint layering some how. Anyway nice vid😊
Am going to do this on the floor of a tack room in a horse trailer. Could not do the peel and stick Carrara marble because of winter temps. Am really excited. Thank you for your help. I will be checking with a local paint professional on the best way to seal and protect since it will be walked on. 😎

I like using glaze medium and water and painting a thin glaze layer of my base coat in between layers it creates dimension ❤

Can you do this on concrete columns or is that a different technique?
Hi! You can do it on any surface, technically, but you will need to prime it properly. There are concrete primers that you can find at hardware stores that you should use. The technique would be a little different for the painting because you can't used paint that is too thin, because you don't want the paint to drip and run.

I am wanting to paint a marble effect wall in my kitchen. I have done hours of research but still struggling to find the best paint to use. Please could you advise what paints to use please 🙏
Hi. What paint you use largely depends on your budget. Technically you can use craft paint, but it is quite cheap and can be more difficult to use. Acrylic paint from an art store can work, but depending on how big your wall is, that might not be very economical. For larger quantities, you can get house paint. Then when you finish, you can seal it with a gloss sealer from a paint store. Any water based sealer is probably fine. Hope that helps!
What kind of Paint, what type of Sealer?
No one addresses the type of product. Acrylic, Enamil, Polyurethane, Polyacrylic?
Hi, I put a little detail in the video description. For this video, I used a white craft paint and Rosco Supersats for the colors. You can use a better quality white, whether it be a Rosco product or a white house paint, and it'll work the same. As for a sealer, I probably used Rosco's Gloss Clear Acrylic, or even a fine art clear glaze medium. For the purposes of making the video I didn't need to go crazy with a more durable sealer, but if you have a specific project in mind, you'll choose a sealer based on your budget, if you want to bother with oil based, and the durability you need. Any of the sealers you listed would work just fine. Hope that helps!
Will this work on a statue? Or will the paint be too runny for a statue?
It can work on a statue, just use less water in the paint if it is dripping/moving too much. You can add a sealer/glaze into the paint instead of water to get the right balance. But the technique is the same. You just might have to experiment with the paint consistency.
Does this work if the canvass is not horizontal? Like, on a wall or easel?
The project I did here in the video was on wood, but you can definitely do very similar marble techniques on canvas. The biggest adjustment would be the amount of water, and you'll have to be sure your base coat is dry before doing vein layers. Obviously if it starts to drip and sag, you've used too much water, but you should be able to do it.
Is it always a white base or can I do any base colour
It depends on the color of marble that you are doing, but for a light colored marble like Carrara, yes, white is the best color to start with.
