I think he’s using the sonic like noise canceling headphones however his device uses technology from a civilization a billion years more advanced than ours so it’s a bit more effective. It is a sonic device so if it can receive sound and transmit the canceling sound back it could create silence over a certain distance. Though I imagine there are some very confused tenants in that apartment complex.
I think the musical ending was the aftermath of banishing Maestro, a bit like the residual Toymaker energy at the end of the Giggle. Plus, why can't the Toymaker and Maestro be 'aliens' from 'beyond'? Speaking as someone who has followed Dr Who since Patrick Troughton's second Doctor
Yeah after some thinking about it more and watching other reactions it definitely makes sense now that there was a residual musical “state” after Maestro was banished. Just like they were still in a “state of play” after the Toymaker.
I just think it ruined the tone and that the pacing of the episode felt a bit rushed and thus why I think it should have been removed to make for more time else were. I'm also not against the musical but it felt out of place and 4th wall breaking and it wasn't well explained why it happened.tho I'm not opposed to their having been a musical number just not slipped on at the end
I’m so glad someone realized it’s Ruby’s theme! That’s such a fascinating and fantastic detail. Ruby is such a mystery companion and it’s incredible. I’ve seen some theories (mostly shots in the dark but who knows with doctor who) that Ruby is a child of the pantheon, of one of the creatures like the trickster- because she does sing the trickster’s song when held captive by Maestro. Could also explain why these fantastical beings of the pantheon are starting to gather around the doctor, because it’s Ruby that’s a part of them.

It was explained that the Doctor's and the Toymaker's actions at the edge of the universe have permitted myths to enter reality. The constant breaking of the fourth wall and the conflation of diegetic and nondiegetic music suggests that the world is messed up. The fact that the Doctor's sonic screwdriver looks like a tv remote suggests that they might actually be trapped in tv show, which would explain why this felt like a musical tv episode.

The piano teacher is a random actor and a random character, however, the actor's father actually did incidental music for Classic Who, mostly for the Fifth Doctor era. The Beatles members include John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. McCartney and Starr are the only surviving Beatles to this day. (Lennon was shot and killed and Harrison died of an illness) The Beatles had an appearance in both Classic and Modern Who, with the four of them appearing on the television via an actual live performance and a pub question in the episode 42. Smog because back in 1900s UK, the chimneys and factories produced a lot of smoke which made the air a bit suffocating. Ruby's theme is not the only character theme that is played and heard by the characters in the Doctor Who world. The Twelfth Doctor actually played Clara's theme in Heaven Sent episode and named it Clara (which is also the character theme name). A lot of people I've seen watch this episode get caught up on the sonic negating sound and how unrealistic or new that is but personally I don't get it. This is the EXACT kinda thing I'd expect it to be able to do. You can cancel noise and sound by playing the exact opposite soundwave, thus negating it. The bubble of sound was nothing more than Active Noise Canceling which a lot of our headphones do these days =) The reason the tuning fork in the water disrupted it was the vibrations in water were happening and interacting so quickly the Sonic couldn't compensate and pop, fizzle =)
People are having a hard time grasping the concepts that have been introduced in this arc and seem to second-guess RTD, as if he doesn't know how to write a good series arc.
The One Who Waits isn’t the Master. The Toymaker trapped the Master in his gold tooth. He didn’t want to play with The One Who Waits and said that was somebody else’s game. Also the Master is just a Time Lord. Not some kind of Celestial or a member of the Pantheon of Discord. Not sure why the image of a waiter or waitress popped into my head. I’m fairly certain that’s not the kind of waiting involved. 😂

It’s a shame you weren’t able to vibe with this one. I adored it, personally. I love it when Doctor Who is full-on sci-fi, but I also love it when it gets kind of abstract, and I feel like this is a story where you either get on board with its level of abstraction with the cold open, or you just give up on it completely.

Personally, I have no problem with more fantastical stuff in Doctor Who, it's not like it was ever a particularly "hard" sci-fi series to begin with. One of my favourite stories is "The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit" and that one didn't have any science-based explanation for The Beast's origins or powers. Plus, of course, God-like beings like the Toymaker have been in the show since the '60s so it's not exactly _new._ As for this episode specifically, I really liked it, admittedly a large part of that is because of Maestro; I'd never heard of Jinkx Monsoon before, but I thought she was fantastic in this, one of my new favourite Who villains along with NPH's Toymaker.
I think this is one of the best episodes ever. Other than the musical twist at the end.... I love the energy and chaos of Maestro. The 77 on the bus, I think, is the bus from Planet Of The Dead, just before David's End Of Time. I might be wrong, it's been a few months since watching that episode, but it sounds familiar.

I've not sure the White Guardian ever released the Doctor from service. Classic Who. When the Doctor defeats all these horrors, it makes me suspect the most powerful being introduced in Classic Who.
The next episode brings things back. It's actually good. These first two were pretty bad. (Though the Maestro was great) There have always been supernatural beings in Who. The Toymaker was from the 1st Doctor's run. There have been the Black Guardian, the White Guardian. The Satan like being from the Satan Pit. It's not a new thing for this show
Yes, I'm very surprised people are acting like these concepts are new and that doctor who is changing. It also doesn't allow room for fun and silly doctor who episodes.
Classic Who was cancelled in 1989 so it was a 16 year gap between that and the new series but before the new series 7 years later after Classic Who ended there was an attempt to bring back the series but failed so it ended up being the TV Movie then a nine year gap between that and the new series with Disney Who even with revival Who i always refer to it as Season 27 etc etc and with the first season of Disney Who season 40. The scene where the Doctor takes Ruby to the alternate 2024 if the Maestro is not stopped has kind of been done before and is a recycled scene from the popular Tom Baker story "Pyramids of Mars" where The Fourth Doctor takes Sarah Jane to alternate 1980 if Sutekh the Destroyer wasn't stopped only difference between Maestro and Sutekh is he's the last of the osirens an alien god while Maestro is an eternal god.
This was a great episode up until that silly singing and dancing at the end of the episode it took me right out of it that was totally unnecessary and doesn't have a place in Dr. Who and feels less sci fi. I did however like the Maestro and how over-the-top and dramatic the villain is it was something new and haven't had a dramatic villain on television in a long time.
I figured the dance number was music reasserting itself in the Maestro’s absence. Probably history reasserting itself as well. All the music from the 1920’s through the 1960’s coming back to reality.
