Thanks so much, Diana for this fantastic video. I last used my knitting machine in 1990! We’ve recently moved and are renovating an old house, but I have already started cleaning and servicing my machine. I truly appreciate your kind generosity in sharing your wealth of knowledge with us all. Greetings from Perth, Australia.
I am in a process of doing one sweater right now, and I will try this. Thanks you so much for all your tutorials. I learned quite a lot from you. You are the best. Lynn
Thanks for the vid 😄. Ps: you can increase on the carriage side when short rowing. If 2 pulled out, yarn goes under both needles. If 3 pulled out, under, then over, then under etc…
Great video. Thanks Diana. I gather that we can also use the Brother Knit Leader (or knit radar or knit tracer) and follow the sleeve outline of our pattern for this technique. I like it and it's so much faster.
I have actually been experimenting with this method. I have been doing a full row of knitting before I arrange the needles for the short rowing. Although it does not come out much differently than directly starting the short rows, it does make the knitting easier because sometimes that "seam" row stitch does not like to knit cleanly off the needle (especially on the bond) and isn't very elastic so you have to add more weights.
Diana, I am new to machine knitting and asked if this could be done on a Facebook forum. Someone put your video as a link. After watching it, I will be following your beginners course with relish. It is so clear and informative. I can't wait to start.
Hi, Carla! No, no written directions, because they would vary for each gauge and size. What you want to do is knit upside-down and follow the instructions for your pattern in reverse order.
Thank you so much for this! You make everything look so easy. I'm going to make a little sweater with set-in sleeve for the 3 yr old, just to see if I can make it work like you do!
You all probably dont care but does any of you know of a way to log back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot my login password. I would love any tips you can offer me
@Duncan Jaxson i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im in the hacking process atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
You are such a wonderful and excellent Professor. It is time I shook off the dust from my lovely knitting machine and started a small project to refresh my brain. I guess I have completely forgotten how to even thread the machine. The last time I knitted was in 1999. Wow this sleeve is so simple to make. So encouraging. Thanks for sharing. Big hugs xxx
It's just an example showing how to do it. You can do it with whatever set-in sleeve pattern you're using if you do the shaping at the top first. It also works very well with a Knit Leader or Knit Tracer.
Thanks for the video. Do you have any advice on how to figure the numbers for your own set in sleeve for each project? Is there a formula or system? Thanks again.
Of course! If you do this, you do the mock rib hem at the end. When it is time to start the hem, sew off the stitches that will be the empty ones. Sew them on to a separate string or ravel cord. Put those needles out of work. Knit the hem rows, twice the length of the hem. The pick up the stitches you put on the string, filling in the empty needles. Then cast off. This is a good situation for a tapestry needle back-stitch cast off because it is stretchy. And you, sir, have given me a great idea for a future video!
Thank you for this very helpfully video. There‘s one thing I don‘t understand: After knitting first six and than eleven times one stitch, you do some more stitches every row to the end. Why? Thank you!
I created a sample sleeve cap with a sample set of numbers. On a project, you would use the numbers for your sleeve. If you try this with a swatch, i think it will come together for you.
So COOL! I hate doing set-in sleeves! Maybe this will make it better. I'm knitting a baby sweater on the Bond, and I'm ready to do the sleeves. Will these numbers work pretty much for that? Thanks!
I don't have written directions. What you need to do is analyze your pattern so you start at the top. If your sleeves start at the bottom, make a list of the increases and decreases with the last ones first so you can follow the technical. Try the video once with a sample, too.
you should calculate them with the arm circumference plus the ease that you want on the arms, that measurement multiplied by the stitch gauge should give you the minimum amount of stitches to pick up
This is NOT a pattern. I made up sample numbers to demonstrate the technique, which you can use for a written set-in sleeve pattern (you will have to study the pattern and do the numbers from the top down, or you can use a KnitLeader with the sleeve picture upside-down.
diana, my name is sandra and i have a kh940 knitting machine that i need help with, i ahve had it for years but i need help to start over again, i have 2 grandaughter that i will love to knit for but i need help getting started, i need lessons, could please help me thanks
The only way to do this would be if you knew how many stitches was on the machine after your sleeve increases before you start your cap shaping, right…? Some patterns don’t have the total stitches so I guess you would need to work this out beforehand
You need the width of the top of the sleeve in stitches. It is often on a schematic, but if it isn't, you do need to work it out. This was tricky to explain - you need to follow your own pattern, but it isn't going to be written upside-down like this!
Email me - go over to my blog and there's an email icon on the left-hand side you can click on. Be sure and tell me where you are located. I will see if I have some ideas for you.
Cette technique ne donne pas les mesures pour un pull en particulier. Ce que vous pouvez faire, c'est utiliser cette méthode avec un modèle que vous aimez. Oh, c'est Google Translate - je ne connais pas le français.

This is so helpful thank you! ❤
Thank you so much, I just used your method and my sleeve insert came out beautiful!
Thanks for the vid 😄. Ps: you can increase on the carriage side when short rowing. If 2 pulled out, yarn goes under both needles. If 3 pulled out, under, then over, then under etc…
I prefer to avoid the floats. Doing the increase on the next row won't show or change the fit.
Thank you Diana for this fantastic tutorial: clear and very, very useful
Great video. Thanks Diana.

a damn live saver this one is!
Why thank you - but honey, nobody ever died from ugly armhole seams!

Wow great mam
That is awesome!
Awesome tutorial Diana! I love the look of the set-in sleeve. Is there any written instructions available?
Very informative thank you, is there a way of creating a folded hem or mock rib at the cuff end of the sleeve when using this method?
Of course! If you do this, you do the mock rib hem at the end. When it is time to start the hem, sew off the stitches that will be the empty ones. Sew them on to a separate string or ravel cord. Oh, look, I already did a video about how to do mock rib at the end of a piece: ruclips.net/video/_tiqQePZ9Jc/видео.html

Diana ciao mi puoi spiegare come fai i calcoli della ampiezza della manica con questo metodo😊
Hello, how make you so that the edges of Jersey do not wind?
Have you an available DVD grouping(including) all these demonstrations?
Thank you ;-)
I have a brother kh 892 Maybe doing something wrong but with needles pulled down they all knit .... Bobbie
Hi, I like yours tutorials, Can you tell me where I can buy knitting machine for beginners?
Thank you!
How do you calculate the number of stithes to be picked up? A ratio row/stitches?
you should calculate them with the arm circumference plus the ease that you want on the arms, that measurement multiplied by the stitch gauge should give you the minimum amount of stitches to pick up
what book are you using for your patterns

Hi Diane can you do a toddler sweater
I have one, here diananatters.blogspot.com/search?q=child+raglan there are youtube videos to go with it, I think. It's been a few years!

You have to follow a pattern or a knitleader or knit tracer chart. This is just a sample for illustrative purposes of how to do the join.
Thank you am a beginner don't have access to this materials learn from this video don't know if you have a way of helping me out
