The Bear Grylls one is very similar to this model and is very well designed. The BG model does come with some additional features ontop of emergency instructions on the back. I wouldn't shrug it off. But I own both and they are both outstanding.

I grabbed one of these on sale a while back and just threw it in my bag. I have probably a dozen knives that cost 5 times more than this and for some reason the Strongarm is what I always grabbed without thinking. The weird thing is I've had horrible experiences with gerber as a company over the years, so kind of surprised the strongarm actually lived up to its reputation. Definitely one solid blade

Not gonna lie, sounds like you've got some kinda deal with Gerber. I've had/have some Gerbers that are just awesome. The strongarm is certainly not one of those tools. Tip and edge retention were pretty bad. I broke the tip doing the same thing you were doing, but I was trying to be a showoff and show my buddy what a sweet deal I got lol. Batoning a piece of pine caused the blade to chip in multiple places. I ended up cutting the blade into a different shape, using it for a bit. Maybe they've changed the steel or the heat treating since I've owned it, or maybe I just treated the thing poorly enough that it failed on me lol.

I’ve owned/heavily used the Strongarm for close to eight years. It’s weakest feature is the sheath. The snap closures and sheath retention are so strong that the nylon webbing for attachment tote on mine in less than one week. The plastic sheath lasts, but if you need the knife pronto you’d better have pronto plus five.

I’ve never seen a Gerber that is still sharp after cutting 2 pieces of paper. I’ve had a lot of them and given up on the brand. Folding, fixed, they’re just cheap from my experiences. I’d be surprised to see this knife stay sharp like it does in the video.

gerber stuff is hit and miss. i’ve had the strongarm for about a year and a half and it’s held up amazing to heavy use, but i made the mistake of buying one of their machetes just because it had the gerber name.
turns out it had a cheap plastic handle and the tang only extends into the handle about 2 inches.
first strike on a skinny tree and the handle broke.

@@pandapanda7503 Check out the Kershaw Camp series. They have 10 inch, 14 inch, and 18 inch. The 14 is an absolute beast of a blade. Ive dug holes with it, felled trees with it, skinned game with it, split wood, bone, metal, all kinds of crazy shit. Full tang, thick spine, heavy weight, fine edge, and they aren’t any more expensive than the Gerber machetes. Thing behaves like a hatchet with 14 inches of blade.

Did you notice that in order to cut paper that he stabbed it and pulled? That's not a good sharpness test. Why didn't he slice in from the edge of the paper, as that test is normally done? I doubt it would pass the test fresh out of the box. Pay attention, it's faults will show. And you can stab through an ammo can with a screw driver.

@@502outlaw2 Shorts are not the best here. Notice he said "Its still PULLS through the Paper"
He was saying it HAD dulled so that it wouldnt do a Propper Paper cut, but NOT so much that it would Tear the paper when pulled through it.
And sure you can poke through Sheet Metal with lots of things, thats not the point, its about seeing how well the knife being tested Maintains Its Edge and Point.
