It's a nice problem to have when the discounted premium smartphone makes more sense. And I'm sure Google will put the 8a on sale, at which point it'll be an easy choice.

this should have come out when the 8 was released, it would make more sense as a "budget" phone.

The iPixel 8a should've been $430.00 or less like iPhone SE 3 at launch imo $500.00 is too much.

@@asimmoideen5960 gotta disagree. They all look the same.
You can argue that the bezels are noticeably thicker. But thats all it is. Ig the iphone has that pill shaped cutout so you can tell that its an iphone but other than that, if you put them all next to each other, i dont see the difference in how they look.
At this point its more brand and experience than the phone itself.
Some phones have a bit of a distinctive look yes, but not enough to say that it doesnt really look the same.

@@darktitan8085 idk if youre American, u guys have basically no competition, Im from India and i can name a few that are rn cheaper , iqoo12, iqoo neo9pro, one plus 12r, s23, these are like the flagship killer contenders, u can go even cheaper with moto edge 50 pro, edge 50 fusion, realme gt 6t, poco f6, nothing 2a, i could prolly go on and on, but they all have really slim bezels
i like the idea of 8a being cheaper in the future, price is prolly the only thing holding it back, but if its intended that way, the design better hold up as well

I switched to Pixel 8a from Huawei P20 (2018), which I used for 6 years. I wanted to buy the Pixel in September-October, when prices would have dropped a little, but the battery in the p20 was swollen and the back cover came off. I thought it was better to buy now and not worry. With version 8a, Google offers 256GB of storage (since I plan to use the phone for the 7 years that it will be updated - this version was relevant for me). Plus, my p20 had 128GB, in 2024 (further - more) this is not enough, even though I don’t play games. Now about the cost: 8a at the time of writing costs 1650 rubles for 128GB and 2000 rubles for the 256GB version. Prices roughly correspond to those in countries where pixels can be purchased officially (so now the price is generally realistic). I considered the regular 8, but 128GB costs 2100 rubles, and 256GB costs 2600 rubles. The difference is almost $200 (in my case) for the following differences (I can’t list everything, but the main ones):
    - thinner frames (in the review I will describe this, why not a minus).
    -gorilla glass victus
    - charging 27w, reverse wireless
    - the camera module is slightly different (if you don’t go into numbers, the difference in the photo as a whole is not noticeable)
    - ip68.
For myself, I did not find this necessary; I will explain it as the review progresses.
Overall impression: yes, it is very good and I did not regret a single dollar for this phone. I’ll say right away that after my 6 year old p20 it’s a very significant upgrade in everything. I took the black version with 256GB (256GB only in black). I bought a Nilkin case for my phone with a sliding camera window (I’m keeping my phone for 7 years, I don’t want to change the camera lenses). I pasted the hydrogel film.
Body: it is not very slippery, better than glass. Doesn't get dirty. Aluminum frames. Well assembled, no gaps. It's comfortable to hold, even in the case. Can be used with one hand (middle hand). Due to the fact that the back cover of the phone is not glass, but plastic, it dissipates heat better and heats up less. Considering the processor, this is a plus for me. Also, if it suddenly falls, there is much less chance of breaking the lid, which will cost us a pretty penny. The design for me is good, minimalistic, not flashy.
Screen: very bright, good colors (I set the color rendition to standard in the settings), photos come out exactly the same color as you see in life. The oleophobic coating is very good, it does not collect stains (the back cover too, unlike the usual 8). Under direct sunlight, everything is visible as if there were none - this is very pleasant, you can use it in the sun without any problems (my p20 could not boast of this). In the settings, 120Hz is turned on, I never turn it on, it works everywhere, the picture is very smooth. The frames are ok for me (3mm on the side). They are about the same as on the p20, but the bottom one is 2 times thinner. Using one hand, it is better - if you need to reach another part of the screen, then there is no touch in the place where I hold the phone with my hand. Definitely not a minus. Unless you have a phone to directly compare with thinner bezels, the pixel bezels will likely be quite normal for you. If you are chasing a mega modern phone with thin frames, probably buy the regular 8.
Camera: great. For my needs, take a photo and go is what I need. It works quickly, there are many settings. Video with good stabilization. The picture is good everywhere, as is the processing. Literally in any lighting. One of the reasons why I wanted a pixel. There are a lot of AI chips, I haven’t used them all yet. After p20 the upgrade is good.
Autonomy: above average. This is noted in the reviews; for me it turns out this way: on average per week there are 5.5-7 hours of screen time and about 6-8 hours of applications in the background. The charge, even at a small %, goes away evenly; the phone will not turn off at a conditional 10%. In the morning I go to work, before going to bed around 11 pm there is about 25-30% left. For a day of normal use (social networks and instant messengers, cameras) it’s enough. Charging 1:30-1:40 (I set it at night, if the alarm clock is on, the phone will charge to 70-80%, and by the time of the alarm it will charge with a weak current to 100% to preserve battery life). I bought the unit from Xiaomi at 20w (type C input). The unit is compact and suitable for the power of the phone. I don’t have wireless charging, I haven’t tested it, but in theory it will charge in 3 hours. My p20 literally sat down in 1.5 hours, this is heaven and earth. I saw in a review on an online site for the Pixel 7a that 5.5-6 hours of screen time is ridiculous and you need at least 9, I don’t know, I can only do this if I literally sit in it all day (and still I can’t land it in 0). If you use it inactively, then 1.5-2 days can be done without any problems. You can take it into the forest.
Hardware: I’ll say right away that for games, take Xiaomi or Poco (and the like). I don’t understand mobile gaming in general and spitting in the direction of the pixel because you can’t play Genshin is laughable. It’s more than enough for my tasks; I only play Sudoku games :)
There are no friezes or lags anywhere. It may warm up a little in the sun, but it cools down very quickly. When scrolling, it heats up a little, but barely noticeable (p20 heated up much more). When updating applications or using charging, it also heats up, but still not hot, just warm. I haven’t run benchmarks, they don’t make sense to me. The chip is fast, the wasps fly, the camera starts up instantly. Somewhere I saw a video of 15 apple and pixel 8a - almost all applications (except games) launched faster on the pixel (although according to benchmarks the difference was many times higher in favor of the apple).
OS: switched from Huawei OS version 10 (Android 10). I don’t know what was added in each version, but now the phone is very convenient to use. This is not a naked android, but a pixel ui. Everything works very quickly, very smoothly and without any frills. The settings take some getting used to (it took a day), but everything is generally intuitive. Comfortable one-handed use without bottom buttons. At the start, the pixel offers to perform a transfer, so I recommend making a backup of your account, everything will be restored on the new device. 7 years of support for all updates (for me it was one of the key purchasing decisions, support until 2031). 8GB of RAM - I have never reloaded the application when logging in again, the memory works well (Yandex music even remembers everything, so when logging in again it will play from the same moment). Flexible screen settings. The scanner under the screen is fast, accurate, at the level of my p20 (there is a touch button). It recognizes the face even faster in the light. Payment via NFS is also available, it doesn’t turn on, you just bring up the phone and you’re done (Swoo pay). There are a lot of flexible notification settings, I haven’t figured them out yet, I just set them up basicly.
Sound: stereo, plays at maximum volume at the level of a MacBook Air 20 or 21 years old. The sound is clear and pleasant to listen to. Calls are also good, you can hear me and the interlocutor well.
Communication: the Internet never drops out anywhere (my operator needed to set up an Internet connection, it was a matter of minutes, the settings are on the Internet and on the A1 website). Switching between 3g and 4g is very fast. Wifi no problem. Geolocation improves very quickly. In general, where my p20 did not catch the network, the pixel loads everything perfectly. Although people complain about communication on the Internet, I haven’t noticed any such problems.
Price: I took the 256GB version (photos weigh differently from 2 to 6MB), with reserve for the future. 128 was not enough for me already at p20. For 128GB it was approximately $505, for 256GB it was approximately $600.
Overall impression: a very good and balanced phone for the money. I wouldn't call it mid-segment, but it's not premium either. Something in between, the mid-high segment maybe. The price and quality are right for me personally (especially considering that I will be using the phone for at least 7 years). It's like Prius or Corolla. Maybe, not best of the best, but very practical and useful.
If you need a phone for basic tasks (social networks, camera, calls, simple games), which will be constantly updated and which is really pleasant to use, take it. Price? I explained at the beginning, but considering the price/quality/capabilities, it’s an ideal option for me (although I think if I bought it as planned in October, it would be 300 rubles cheaper). Therefore, if you are planning to upgrade and are pressed for time, wait 1-3 months and buy at a more attractive price. I don’t see any point in overpaying for the 256GB version of the regular Pixel 8.

4:43 I hate how that came in to play on split screen mode for apps on One UI (I don't remember the version.) It was even more annoying because it looks awful on tablets and I almost stopped using it for my Tab S7+ when it happened. On my S24 Ultra, it isn't as bad, but the corners of the phone are right angle, so it also makes no sense. Windows 11 for my work computer now has the rounded corners, and I feel like I'm a madman for wanting hard right angle corners again. 🤣

I've been using the 8a for almost a month now and it seems great, the black border doesn't bother me at all, the battery life is good for me, I'm not a gamer, I'm not as heavy a user as most people so it could last me more than one day.
It replaced my galaxy s20, witch had smaller battery admittedly, good size for me as I don't have massive hands, gorilla glass 5 would have been nice I guess, but still ,fine.
It charges no slower than the s20,so that's ok for me.
I'm in Australia, and the price of the 8a is $850,I carrier had a deal where by if I went with them, I would receive a $750 gift card that I could put towards a new phone.....so I did.
I got the pixel 8a for $100 and it only costs me $15 more per month.

Thanks for the video! By the way, I am curious to hear your thoughts and suggestions.
I am considering switching from Pixel 3 to Pixel 8A or Pixel 8.
The UK Google Store offers a nice amount of money for the Pixel 3 trade-in option.
As a result, I could not make up my mind between 2 options:
    1Pixel 8A 128GB for 300 GBP?
    2)Pixel 8 128GB + Pixel Watch gen.1 for 500 GBP?
I haven't used the smartwatches before due to the lack of need. But still, it might be a curious experience.
    What would you choose?

So eventually at the sales the price of this phone will come significantly low and maybe at that time people will definitely buy this smartphone . As of know Google doesn't care about the pricing at all as she said the right thing that Google doesn't care which model you buy.

@@billyhw5492 the Pixel 8 and 8 pro both have 50mp cameras and they use pixel binning as well which results in using 12.5mp photos but when they use the full 50mp camera itself, the quality of the photo is actually worse then when it's at 12.5 mp via pixel binning. That's why Google is using it on the pixel 8a. You get way better results with pixel binning then you do with using it's full mega Pixels

The average upgrade cycle is 3-4 years so most buying from new do not care about seven years support. But if you sell it or pass it on then someone may benefit. But for me, seven years is not a reason I would buy a phone. In the past when Samsung and others only had 2-3 years, then that was a rip-off, but most now have four years.

This phone looks great but it has the same familiar problems that all Tensor based Pixels have. Bad battery life, overheating, and unreliable modem connectivity. It isn’t worth buying a Pixel device until 2025 with the Pixel 10 lineup. TSMC is doing the fabrication on the Tensor chip starting on the 10 series and that’s the earliest you’d expect any real world improvement. It just wasn’t a good idea to make Tensor a modified Exynos chipset. That’s where the problems begin and end. Good review though!

People complain too much about bezels it’s ridiculous. Also, a little more money? To me a $200 difference between the 8a and 8 is a substantial amount. Plus I prefer the plastic matte back and flat camera bar. I do believe instead of $499 the 8a should’ve been $399 maybe $449 at most. Because charging $499 makes it less affordable and more upper mid range prices. However, if you wait until it’s on sale then picking it up makes sense if you are a Pixel fan.

I don't like the notch or island, every time I see the island and notch. I want to get a pair of scissors to cut out the notch and island every time. I rather have bezels like my sony xperia 1 iv android phone or a pop up camera like my vivo nex s to only show the front facing camera when it's being used. If there was an option for no front facing camera and replace it with an external webcam, I would just plug the phone into an external webcam as a replacement for the front facing camera. There are already companies that are willing to sell smartphone camera accessories like from the moment brand so replacing the front facing camera would be another option since there are consumers that already buy accessories for there phone to add more features and functionality for there phone.
