Something I wanted to add regarding VOLUME/HEIGHT, my hair naturally falls throughout the day and does this WITH and WITHOUT layers. However, when my hair is not layered it still maintains an overall look of fullness which is not true for when my hair is layered. Hope ya'll enjoy this video! Let me know if you have any questions and/or future video requests!
@@bonniemcdermott1048 it’s a scalp massager! I have some in my amazon store, linked in the description!!! Can also sometimes find them at the dollar store or target etc!
Finally a woman who truly understands fine curly hair and how NOT to layer. The salon wanted to trim and layer my hair but I refused.. You understand how our fine curly hair can appear thinning in areas looks more sparse than what it is
YES! God I've been trying to grow these bad layers I got for a year - I'm so tired of the rat tail look! I have fine curly hair and nothing fits me better than a blunt 'triangle' cut!
I have similar hair and I hate layers in my hair. It makes my hair stringy and grows out horrible. I've almost got them all gone. Everything you said in this video is true to me. Stylists always tell me I need layers. I thought I was the only one that hated them and I was crazy! Thank you!
NOOOO! Truth is I’ve kind of known that I needed this shape for years but kind of fell into the layers hype.... twice. Both times, before my hair was like at peak health and shape. Both times have taken well over a year to grow out because of the additional damage. Proud of you for standing your ground & trusting your hair!!!
Layers don't work for my hair either. It's very fine, flyaway and thin, and like you, stylists are always trying to talk me into them. NO more! Blunt bob works great.
Exactly! They don't take no for an answer. Like just give me a simple trim but then I always end up looking like the curly version of Joan Jett. I'm desperately trying to grow my hair out from these darn layers!!
I think this has been my problem. On my way to my old stylist prepandemic. I was on my way to fixing my hair then I went to a new stylist that just cut a ton of layers back in. Needless to say my hair was back to looking like a scraggly mess.
I went into my first Deva cut instinctively knowing this about my hair. I told the stylist layers have always looked awful on me, my hair is fine, and very different day to day. Sometimes parts that were ringlets last wash are straight next time. It’s just hard to guess what it’s gonna do any given day. I told her in the past layers have caused my top layers to curl a lot more than the bottom layer so even a subtle layer will give the appearance of two totally separate hair cuts. Like the top layer curls up shorter and curlier, the bottom gets straighter and looks longer so it’s like I’m wearing a curly wig on top. Just awful. She assured me no no I’m an expert it won’t look like that when I do it blah blah blah. I trusted her. I shouldn’t have. Why won’t stylists listen to people about their own hair? I practically begged her to listen and please not add layers especially short layers on top. I have parts on top that are literally 4 inches long root to top while the majority of my hair is more like 12-14 inches. Huuuuuuuge layers. Gonna take years and years to grow them out. So heartbreaking and frustrating.
I’m so sorry. It’s so frustrating not to be listened to. Stylists are experts in some aspects but they are not experts on individual hair and needs. It’s been one of the most exhausting things for me too, I started wearing my hair curly when I was 16 and NO ONE knew how to do curly hair, I literally had to create a specific cut for myself which was dry, finger detangled and is typically go in on like day 3 or 4 so my hair would lay fairly flat, I’d have then literally JUST dust the ends and then I’d go. And even still they sometimes would try and get creative and it was exhausting.
I recently got a haircut and had very long hair. I told her I wanted layers but I feel like she cut so many layers I have lost my density and it looks off. It’s annoying. Thankfully , curly hair does camouflage a bit and it’s not as “bad” but I’m not happy with it. I know it will take years as well to grow it all out 😫 , then again , there’s nothing we can do now. Just make the best of it.
I've asked myself the same question for years, why won't stylists just listen to their clients?? Not only are they the worst listeners but they are so damn stubborn. And most of them are like that. I don't get it. This is why many people have taken it upon themselves to learn how to cut their own hair. I just wish I was brave enough.
@@Alex-tk7ghfr I’m here YouTubing if I should give myself a blunt cut or if I should pay a random hairdresser from great clips and demand a very specific blunt cut
I always bought into layers because I was scared of "triangle" hair. But that only ever happened when I brushed my hair out. Much happier now without layers.
I personally think the triangle shape gets a bad wrap too. My favorite hair shape was a slightly rounded triangle and it was the best my hair ever looked!!!
the triangle is just hype. It is more of a problem for girls who have tons of volume. It also becomes less of an issue as you continue to grow your hair past your shoulders.
@@Mayaspiral i have hair longer than my shoulder area however I still have a triangle shape. I want to cut ends and also lose this triangle any recommendations?
oh, glad I read this, thanks! I just found the vid and haven't watched it yet, but struggling with what to do about layers. I just did a chop of about 6 inches (yikes) to get rid of some really stupid looking layers. The plan was to even it out ahead of growing out the length again. It's now between jaw and shoulder length and I'm so surprised how much I'm liking it, having been a longer hair person. I learned I was actually curly/wavy after a lifetime of thinking I had straight, frizzy and yes, triangle hair. I'm excited to read your experience of giving up the layers and just not brushing out lol seems so simple, but it's taken me years LOL PS the thing I hate about layers is that good ones seem hard to re-create. They may be nice (or not) and grow out, and then it's gamble whether the new layers cut in will be as nice. No layers would make life so much easier!
I'm so glad that I heard this. I have super fine, flyaway wavy baby hair. Every curly hair stylist pushes me to get layers and they always look so bad. My hair would be see through. It bugged me so much. Since all the salons were closed where I live, I decided to cut my hair into a bob at jaw length and get rid of most of the layers. It looked great. I got more compliments on my bob job, than I ever got from the pros. I did finally go to a stylist (not curly specialist) and she agreed that a bob is best for my hair. She's the first stylist that has said that to me. Today I was starting to doubt myself and wondering if I should get layers again, and I was saved from that mistake by hearing you. My bob is now at about chin length. I may need a trim pretty soon, but no layers. Thanks for sharing.
I have found that cutting my own hair was the only way to get what I wanted! Instead of trying to argue with the stylist...and even after telling them what I want, invariably leaving with what THEY wanted. Just like you, I recently cut a bob between shoulder and chin length, and I'm shocked how much I like it (I usually have much longer hair)!
My hair is high density, thick, and coarse, but I’ve also realized that I prefer more minimal layers too. I don’t need help with root volume, and too many layers make me look like a mushroom and just look really awkward, and it’s frustrating to style. People always assume I want my hair thinned out or something, but I want to embrace my fullness!
Agree so much. It took me 2+ years doing the CGM to figure out that curly cuts make my hair look WORSE. Since I've let it grow out and made it more all one length I'm so happy with the fullness I have and how my waves behave. Wish I had seen this 2 years ago!
I was JUST talking about this with a friend! I decided that layers don’t work for me for my thin, low-density hair. While I had more volume, it also looked like I had less hair. I totally understood what you meant! I have minimal layers now and my hair looks so much fuller and my curls are more defined. Another thing I noticed was that as my hair grew out, my ends were so thin! Thicker on top, very thin at the bottom!
Thank you, thank you, thank you Janelle! I couldn’t figure out why my hair looks worse since I had layers cut at end of August. Went 8 months this year without a haircut and my hair looked full and wavy. Now I can’t get the bottom to curl up and and it always looks stringy. No more layers for this girl!
Thank you SOOO MUCH!! My hair is almost exactly like yours. I’ve always been told that layers will give me more volume but I have always had that mid back-of-the-head flat dead spot that never bounced up! Drives me crazy!! 20 years ago I had long one length hair and I used to get beautiful curls. I thought that was gone because my youth is over but now I realize it might have been because of the layering I’ve been getting ever since!! I also loved watching you casually do your day 4 refresh as you spoke! Really helpful.
I totally agree. I have very fine, low density hair. I got a specialized curly cut last year with lots of layers. It definitely showcased my curliest under-layers. I think it looked good for a brief time. However, I had serious gaps show, and the thinness has really shown as it has grown out. I have had to accept that no magical cut is going to miraculously change my hair. I am working to accept and enjoy what I have to work with... Thanks for the video! 💛
Exactly the same for me. I finally bobbed mine to start over again. As you can see by my photo I was styling my hair so tended to cut for styling and this included more layering. Now that I’m leaving it curly I need blunt lines for a denser look, extremely minimal layering if any, and I also clip my roots in areas that tend to not have fullness. The difference is remarkable. Now I’m only coloring my hair, and I tend to need recovery time after that. I’m a hairstylist and it still took me time to commit to my hair/curls and what they needed. It’s really nice to see my experience is shared!
YES!!! Wow. I *just* had this exact realization recently. I have the same problems. Low density hair, the cowlick in back, etc. I have a bunch of layers and definitely regret it. My hair looks so much thinner and the back especially is bad. 😂 Time to grow this out! Thanks for your thorough and insightful explanation.
I have 3c/4a curly hair. Mostly 3c. And, I am with you girl lol. My hair is waist-length when straightened, and shoulder-length in its curly state. I like my hair to be long, and layers gives much more volume than I want. Also, it's hard for it to even out if you get them cut too short. Plus, you never know what it'll look like straightened, at least in my case.
This seals it. We have basically the same hair, I just have some more grays! I'm still trying to grow out some of my layers, but it looks much better without many layers. Thanks for sharing.
Same exact thing happened to me! Thought my hair was just thinning with age but now that I seen this video I'm thinking it was just the layers I put in. Can't wait till they grow out!
This is the best timed video!! I was just thinking I want more height...let’s get proper shorter layers, but my gut was telling me.. you’ll loose density for your curls to form. Thank you for your video it’s given me pause and info to think on.
I couldn't have said it better! Layers don't work for me either. They make my ends prone to breakage as you said so eloquently! And also make my hair look less full :)
I have a cowlick at the back of my head just as you described. I asked my stylist to cut shorter layers back there as I thought it would help hide the cowlick. She explained that no, shorter layers would actually make the splitting worse...so happy she didn’t listen to me!
I’m glad too!!! I’ve tried it twice with shorter layers and both times it made it worse. Whereas if I let my hair grow longer so my top layer is touching my shoulders that weight eventually hides the cowlick.
I went to my stylist in October wanting layers because that was what in my mind would make my fine, low density 2c/3a curls appear thicker. He told me the exact things you talked about in this video and gave me just one layer like yours. My hair is pretty much the same length, it's just a little shorter at the top layer and that's the only layer I have in my hair. It's March and it's time for another haircut. I think I'll keep my hair this way (I also want to grow it out), I'll just ask for some face-framing pieces at the front. What you said makes so much sense! And also, he taught me how to clip my hair for more height without losing density
I absolutely needed this video today! I have baby fine hair that is a mixture of waves and curls. Despite regular trims, the ends start looking wispy and stick out...because of the layers! They also grow out like shit making me look like a mullety Christmas tree after a month or so. Looks like it's hair in a bunville until it grows out enough to chop it to a more suitable nearly one length!
Hi Jannelle, I know you're not around just now but just in case you still get notifications I wanted to say something. This video makes so much sense to me! I found it about a year ago & I come back to this & your home haircut video often. I've been cutting my own hair using various different methods for several years but yours is the only one I now always come back to. If I went to a hairdresser now, they would cut almost all my length so I'm growing it on a go slow, trimming maybe 2 or 3 times a year. I'm not even dusting much just now, trying to grow everything out to one length so I can then snip some layers in again. I've hair some hair loss through menopause too so have been using Plantur 39 Tonic which is really helping get growth back but my layers are all over the place! Lol! But, I am determined! I trimmed yesterday & even though my lengths are still thin, a little cut of a couple of inches really helped bring a bit of life back. Just, please, don't ever take your channel down!! I have watched so many of your videos, love your hair & love how you come across.in your videos 😃 If you do see this, I hope you are well, it would be great to see you come back but I totally respect you for not posting anything new, but yeah, please don't remove your channel! Very best wishes to you & yours! Jill xx
My hair is 2b, I have medium/high density but it is EXTREMELY fine. Last year I went for layers and my hair NEVER curled up again ever since. At least not how it used to.
Same 😭 I'm a mix of 2b/c and some 3a here and there. My hair is fine, but I have sooo goddamn much of it. Like even with an undercut, it still looked like a full head of hair. I got layers thinking it would help, but just like you, now my hair barely curls at all....I thought it would improve curl definition because it would take a lot of weight off that I thought was pulling my curls out. Apparently not 💔
This is me ESPECIALLY now that I'm in my fifties and I'm letting my grays (actually white) hair grow out. It's a completely different texture and curl then my natural brown hair. But even before then, and I've had grays hair since I was in junior high, my natural hair has had a different curl and texture all my life. Everyone wants to cut curls with layers. And my hair has looked stupid every time. So I have avoided going to get my haircut like the plague. Always did my best to try to cut my ends on my own or have someone at home do it. Thank you for this. This is what I've needed for so many years! You have beautiful hair! ❤️
I think that might be my problem. I hate the way the back of my hair looks. My ends look scraggly, like that pic of yours. I thought it was damaged. What you say makes perfect sense now, thanks!
Thanks Jannelle! This is so helpful! I’m a stylist in AZ I have always loved working with curls and this video helped me so much! It won’t make sense to stylist’s at first because it’s exactly the opposite from what we’ve been taught! If you are a stylist keep an open mind! This is perfect for the type of curl and loose curls that Jannelle has! I’m excited to try it on my daughters hair! Thank you thank you thank you! 🥰
This makes a ton of sense, thank you! When I first started CGM a few years ago the back of my hair was super full and curly and now, several deva cuts later, it definitely needs some help. I just thought I needed more *frequent* layering but now I will definitely be trying it your way to see if I can get this back to my pre-layered look.
Jannelle, what a blessing to have found this video! I've been layering my curls for 20 years at the recommendation of every single stylist I've been to, and now that I'm letting it grow to a "blunt cut" or single layer... I'm getting natural ringlets right out of the shower!!! I'm awestruck at how you hit the curly jackpot and the "professionals" just don't get it! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and God bless you. 🙏🏻
OMG you may have just saved me from wrecking my hair! I was thinking I need to get more layers put in so that the weight doesn’t loosen my curl pattern...my hair used to be so nice and dense but it’s probably medium density now. Usually around day 2-3 the clumps get bigger/more hairs team up so I get pretty cute ringlets in the bottom 3rd (ish) of my hair. I was thinking to get it shorter and a better shape via layers...reconsidering that now. Sigh. Idk what to do with it now! Maybe keep my few non-dramatic layers, get some length off, and some face framing? Blah. Jannelle thank you so much for this insight!
This is so interesting. Due to lockdowns I haven't been able to get my normal cut so all of my layers are growing out. I have super fine, low density hair and as its growing out I am definitely loosing volume but what you sat about density makes so much sense
It is a journey to find a stylist who listens to you. A lot tell you what they want to do, to trust them and its only hair - it will grow back. No. I know my hair. If you put layers in it I will look bald in the back and my beautiful curls will disappear. It will take 3 years to grow back. Trust ME, I know what will work and look good on me. You all have had your fun over the years, let me decide what looks best on me. Your not there to style it every day. Not every technique works on every curl pattern. You do not need to thin out my thick beautiful hair. It does not look heavy. This is what gives me volume. You thin it out and instantly my head turning curls are now deflated. Ladies please do not be afraid to stand up for yourself. Remember that YOU are paying them and YOU have to live with the cut. YOU know what rocks on you❗😘
I’m glad you said that. I’m still in the process of growing my hair so right now it’s just a mess and my hairstylist friend keeps telling me that I need to get a lot of layers and I keep trying to tell her that I don’t have enough hair for that. I can’t afford to spare that hair in the bottom layers!
Thank you, Janelle for taking the time to explain your journey away from layers, correcting misconception that layering does not work for all hair types- I've had the same experience. I love full look & crown volume but I've med-low density. Beautifully articulated explanation. I can take this video to my stylist now🙌💜
OMG, the back of my layered hair looks exactly like yours, and honestly I hate it. I've also wanted to grow out my layers, but was hesitating, and your video just popped up, just on time 😅 thanks for all the explanations 🥰
Hello! I have wavy thick hair, like 2b and I had gotten layers about 2 months ago. Right now, I can't wait to grow them out! It's brought all the points you said, especially with breakage. Next time, I'll just get face framing layers with a straight cut in the back. Also maybe a nice fringe tool Thanks a lot for sharing. It was quite helpful. God bless. (:
Hey Janelle! I have medium to low (mostly low) density, and EVERYTHING u said LITERALLYYY happens to me!!! I FINALLY have somebody to relate to with my hair!
This video is the truth I didn’t know I needed to hear. 1- thanks for the quality content. I’m loving this new season of curl lessons 2- HOW DO YOU FIX IT JANNELLE HOW DO YOU FIX. HOW DO WE GROW THAT MESS OUT. honestly the tangles get so bad that I actually broke a lot of my own hair out of frustration. What do we do? We have to cut? How do we grow it without going nuts?????
Trimming from the bottom layer only is what’s helped me. Essentially letting it grow a little bit and then trimming the ends bluntly. Also dusting split ends and individual curls on higher layers so they remain healthy as they grow!
Oh my word, someone who finally understands my hair! This is me 100%. I have asked my curly hair stylist to cut back on layers because the bottom layers start to look stringy, she keeps putting layers in that I don't want. Switching stylists now with the hope that she can do the "temple down" method you mentioned!
Thank you so much for this!! Just saved me another round of disappointment with a layered cut. I’ve noticed all the same issues, but never really “clicked” until this video. 🙏🏻❤️
Glad I watched this before going to get my hair cut, I have hair very similar to you, I want volume but now I see the folly in getting layers because I have the same issues. Thanks for saving me before I spend $80 on the wrong cut for my hair.
Literally this is my story. Thank you so much. I’ve been recovering my hair from a layered cut like the one you had and it’s doing better. I have my first curly hair cut towards the end of this month and I’m thinking of going back to “long layers” like I had years ago. thank you ♥️
I agree with what you said as I have wavy to curly hair that is fine. I have a ridiculous amount of hair so density is not an issue but man when I add too many layers the fine hair takes a beating and I also end up with split ends and fairy knots!
This video is ridiculously helpful 👍 What you’re discussing- loss of fullness and stringy ends, etc is exactly what I’m struggling with. The picture of the back of your hair with layers is what mine looks like currently. Going to work on getting the bottom 3/4 of my hair the same length root to tip!
My hair literally does the same thing that yours does. Just before my wedding, I didn't layer my hair and I had beautiful full and long hair. And I realised I had lesser split ends for a loooong time.
Where has this video been my whole life!!!! I have medium density curly hair, but I’ve always hated how my curls look when I have layers because it looks kinda like a bootleg mullet 🤦🏻♀️ no matter how many different stylist I went to. Haven’t had a cut in over a year & I love my hair now that my hair is the same length!
Yes! Makes so much sense when you break it down this way! Exactly what I’ve been doing for the last few years and had no idea it’s working against me and my fine, low density curls. I’ve got the crown cowlick too. My curly stylist has been so sweet to humor my push for the layers 😳 Thank you so much for this!
I’ve been pondering this just lately! A gal I know says she doesn’t do layers anymore so maybe I’ll try it. I have a cut scheduled this Tuesday 12/8 so need to decide. Thank you for this video, Jannelle!
thank you. i’m suppose to get my hair done in a week and i needed this. i was going to go the opposite route and get a shaggy cut. but hearing everything you said i’m changing my mind! my curls completely disappeared after getting the nexplanon implant. i’ve had it out for four months and my hair still isn’t back to normal
I totally gave up on oidad cuts and deva cut and I'm not even going to touch the rezo cut. It just does not work for fine haired curlies with 2b-3a curls. The layers and debulking make you hair look stringy.
I love that your sharing your unique experience instead of repeating what heard. This makes total sense to me and is very helpful especially with the photos is what makes it
Oh Jannelle! I am so with you! I have hair around my nape and sides that is straight and layers expose that straightness! Thanks so much for your insight!
omg you thank you for confirming my doubts! i hate layers! so much! i've been given multiple layers in my hair without my consent more than once! 😭 and all my curls are gone. they're just half curls now lol.
You are speaking EXACTLY what my hair does. I tell myself you're my hair twin!! Multiple curl patterns, down to the grays! But this video - the cowlick, the loss of density, the gaps! Thank you, you're the only one on RUclips seen with this type of hair.
Hi, I know this video is old, but the advice is timeless. I just 6+inches of dead straggly hair. I still have medium/long hair and I wanted the stylist to layer it. She cut in long layers instead of what I asked for. Its been two days and I rinsed it out today because she didn’t do the curly girl method after telling her a few times about how well it worked for me. Thanks for your vids , I wish I watched them sooner❤
I am so glad you posted this video. I have been trying to grow out my super fine low density hair. I swear I'm going bald (not really it's the cut). I'm just realized it's the layers growing differently looking think in areas. I'm going to work on strength in numbers.
Yesss! They grow skinny and what I’ve also experienced is the areas that are extra fine have broken so I’ve lost length and fullness there, giving it an overall really uneven look with no shape!
Love this! I have a ton of hair, but I’ve realized that layers screw up my hair! My curl pattern is looser and the weight of my hair on top doesn’t work when they put all the layers on the bottom. It goes all over the place and turns into a hot mess. My hair is easier when I have no layers, but then it lacks style. I need to try just light layers in the top third. Thank you thank you thank you!
Omg same! Layers are the worst for me. I have such fine hair that I need a blunt cut for fullness otherwise it won't grow past my chin. It breaks off far too easily and looks really thin and scraggy. Not attractive at all. Once I stopped having layers and just kept trying to grow it all one length it looks so much better! Whoever said layers are for fine haired girls are nuts. It looks horrible. Only useful if you want something really short like above the jaw.
At first, layers were great for me, but now that I’ve had it a few times, I totally see what you mean by loosing density and thinning in areas where you wouldn’t. My problem is my front pieces are heavy (I have wavy hair and like to keep it long) so would a blunt cut with face framing be possible in a haircut? I’ve been thinking this with my upcoming appt. I’ve also had some shedding due to seasonal changes and stress so I’d like to make density a priority.
Totally possible! It’s no different then having a more blunt cut with bangs in a way. They pull the hair to create the bangs from a different place that doesn’t really affect the look or density. I would make sure they are just adding face framing to the pieces essentially at the top of your head and not to the hairs around your ears etc because those hairs contribute to the overall look of density!
SAME, on so many points. I have shiny ringlets underneath, and rough wavy, very coarse hair at the crown. A stylist with tight curls thought that cutting that section would make it spring up but it doesn’t, it just ends up looking straight. I’ve found that the longer it gets, the more the waves work themselves into curls. And yes, that last layer gets so beat up. Strength in numbers! I actually like my hair to feel heavy. If it’s too light I feel like I don’t have any 🙃 Great timing because I’m growing out a HORRIBLE butcher job from spring (by someone who supposedly had textured training). So thanks for the insights as I try to figure out what I want once I do decide to get a new cut. Did you say that you get face framing done? Oh and those grays...they stick straight out with zigzag ends. The future is frightening
This makes so much sense!! I got my first Deva cut a year ago and since then have had a really hard time getting the full/bouncy look I was getting before it. Your hair type sounds really similar to mine so I so appreciate your content!! (Also this is beside the point but the color palette happening in this video with wall/lamp/shirt/cat is aesthetic perfection 😍)
Your hair looks great without the layers, I personally could never do that because my hair is very thick and if I don't add layers I get a triangle look that's so heavy on the bottom. I think maybe it just depends on how thick your hair is when it comes to layering but your hair always looks beautiful!!
SUPER HELPFUL! And helps me problem solve why my bang area is cooperating a lot more now. I would love more ideas on root clips for SUPER low density hair. I can't quite guarantee how the hair turns out when I use them.... and I don't even have enough hair as you to grab a big chunk.
Something I’ve also been playing with is tiny plastic clips, the little jaw clips but the mini version. Those I think would be better for less density/finer hair!
huge fan of this, I always wondered why everyone does layers, but then they get thinned out ends that dont look that great when full hair is so pretty. Certain cuts it works for but like you said theres so much damage from exposed parts everywhere and it kinda just escalates. my hair is super weird, some days its loose curls and most of the times its wavy mixed but its relaxed not pretty and tight like yours. I will get super tight ringlets if im really excited but ive too found that layers just murder my hair, while a blunt cut gives it lots of movement. its fascinating! So happy to have found your video, i thought i was alone in this.
I have fine curly hair and I can totally relate. I just hate how my hairdresser cut my long gorgeously grown hair short into layers twice just because my hair is curly. Both times I just wanted a hair trim so that my hair continues to grow even longer. Both times I was dissatisfied and got grumpy. Now I won't go to any hairdresser to cut my hair. I'll cut on my own. It's so annoying when your hair takes 6 to 12 months to grow gorgeously and hairdressers just impose their opinion and cut your hair short in minutes.
Girl, you just spoke straight to my fine haired soul!! Thank you so much for this video!!!! So incredibly helpful! Oh, and I have a cowlick in the same spot and it drives me NUTS. I thought layers would help 🙈🥴
Ohhhhhhhhh! Thank you so much for explaining about the curls "helping" the other hairs :) I don't know how many times I've cut shorter layers on top thinking they will have volume and more curl (less weight = more curl....NOT) I ended up with shorter clumps that just stuck out, almost straight!! I'd tell myself it didn't work, then work on growing them out, then forget and TRY IT AGAIN! Those days are done, thanks to this video!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I haven't been to your channel in a while and I am just floored by how much the similarities in what's been happening to my hair resemble yours. I recently went back to less layers to try and achieve that desired fullness at the bottom because of hair loss i am far less dense than i was. i hated being able to see my shirt through my curls. awesome tips. i think i'll use this as a guide next time i get a cut. some of my jurist curls i remember where with less layers back before i even one what a layered cut was. In jr high it was triangular but far far curlier. Getting just a little layering not he top makes so much sense, won't be triangular but will help my curls clump and be full.
I think the triangular cut gets a bad wrap and honestly it really works well for people with low density, looser curl types etc! My stylist in vegas used to give me a slightly rounded triangular cut and it was the fullest my hair ever was/looked!!!
@@JannelleOShaughnessy I was going to ask what I should ask for? My aunt used to cut my hair but I’ve been getting some blonde the last couple years and has nice haircuts from the new stylist. I did ask her to do a more blunt cut with more long layers which I’ve liked, sort of similar to what you said. But I might do even a little less layering. Most of the blonde has grown out and I kind of miss it. Was thinking maybe I might get a little in for dimension and then go back to my aunts for the cut since she does a solid job for like $35.
This is great. Thanks for sharing! My hair is fine and low/medium density and very similar to yours and I have the same issues with layers, including the cowlicks. Layers make my hair stringy, more prone to breakage and they take forever to grow out.
Loved this video! I’ve drooled over those curly girls with big luscious curls and I truly thought a layered cut would result in same. Except my curl pattern isn’t a big curl. It’s more of zig zag wave on some area, a tighter coil in others. And I have thinner hair and to add insult a flat head soooo every time I layered it liked just ok from front but stringy (like you said) on the ends, side profile was worse and my flat head was accentuated. Instead of a rounded hair profile it was like a bad mullet. Snd the back view was worse. No curl pattern at all. In thinking back to when it was one length my hair would have perfect crimped wave in back (root to end) with more curls on side and front. I’d get compliments but my quest for big ringlets led me think a layered cut would magically make that appear. So now I’m growing out the layers and wearing a pineapple 24/7 so I can stand it. My question is at what intervals do I get ends trimmed to meet up to the shorter layers? And what interested me was your explanation about only getting top 1/4 of crown with long layer? And face framing. Could that be explained more? I used to get it slightly angled on side -but my stylist seems to look blank when I say face framing. I know time to find new stylist. But pandemic got me at home. But thank you for your video and also ... shout out to the eye opener in an early IG story you made mention about using wavy products of curly products weighed down the clumps. I have great springy clumps (in front) but once I apply product it doesn’t even spring up. It’s like frozen. So that was very enlightening!!!
I have high density, fine hair, but this is the journey I've been on as well. I'm so tired of ugly curly hair cuts. I have long hair and for the last couple years, I've been thinking a subtle long layered hair cut with invisible layers and curl shaping is best. I've been working toward that. Getting closer with each trim. It's such a long process, but it's looking so much better.
Yes. OMG almost everyone tries to layer my hair and it just leads to extra snarls and thereby more split ends. I don’t get fuller looking hair either I just look more bald. Plus my bun looks extra fuzzy if I have layers.
My timing in finding this video was perfect. I have an appointment coming up at salon that specializes in curly hair. It’s new to me. I’ve never had a dry cut before. I haven’t had my hair cut since late July or early August. I think I need a few long layers and face framing, but not the layers I was initially thinking of. My hair is longer than in my current profile picture. I’ll definitely be talking to the stylist about this. Thank you!
This is such a good explanation. My hair is really similar to yours. I've had layers since I was like 12. I have always struggled to grow my hair out healthy. When I was young, I wanted thinner hair. Not anymore. I want to keep every single hair. Shower fallout is a tragedy every time. Thank you for explaining the effect of layering so well. No one told me! I'm 27.
You just blew my mind! My hair is so thin and fine so I have always layered it to give it volume. Your "before" pictures are just like my hair (except maybe not as thin). It gets stringy and pointy and looks terrible! I'm definitely going to try growing them out now. Thanks for the epiphany!
I've been trying to grow my hair out since February when I had my horrible big chop and now I understand why I don't like the way it looks in the back all those dang layers
My wavy to curly fine hair curls MUCH better the longer it is. I have higher density on top & at the nape, but those layers make the side of my head look stringy. I think I'm going to grow these layers out & see how it goes. Which shouldn't be a problem since the salons in calif are closing down again. Thanks for the advice I thought I HAD to have layers with curly hair. ❤️🙏❤️
Thank you. I've been on the fence whether or not to get layers, since I've been letting my hair grow, since I've started this journey, just over 2 years now, so I've been doing my own curl-by-curl cut, like Marisa Curls shows. My hair curls at the ends like yours do! So now layers for me.
This video is ridiculously helpful and relevant to my current hair struggles 👌👍🙌 I’m going in for a cut soon and I now know what to tell the stylist to help me grow out my current layers and get the shape that my hair desperately needs!! Thank you!!
Yesterday I noticed that layers are not working on my hair and it's exactly what you explain here! I'm going to the U shape cut next time. Thank you so much 🤗
Something I wanted to add regarding VOLUME/HEIGHT, my hair naturally falls throughout the day and does this WITH and WITHOUT layers. However, when my hair is not layered it still maintains an overall look of fullness which is not true for when my hair is layered.
Hope ya'll enjoy this video! Let me know if you have any questions and/or future video requests!
What was that wide toothed ‘comb’ called that you used at the end?
@@bonniemcdermott1048 it’s a scalp massager! I have some in my amazon store, linked in the description!!! Can also sometimes find them at the dollar store or target etc!
How did you grow out your layers when you were experiencing breakage?
@@JannelleOShaughnessy Thank you so much! Can you post a link to it?
What should I tell my hairdresser I want?
Yes blunt bob for the win! @@annaburns5382
I’m 100% part of the no layers club!! I always get a blunt cut across the bottom :)
Ditto
@@JannelleOShaughnessy so nice to feel understood, thanks for your videos they’ve been very helpful.
I'm excited to read your experience of giving up the layers and just not brushing out lol seems so simple, but it's taken me years LOL
PS the thing I hate about layers is that good ones seem hard to re-create.
Yessss embrace that fullness!
Omg your right my hair looked fuller before I went ahead and got layers recently I have low density hair
Whoa total lightbulb moment! I'm low density and this totally explains why my cowlick bald spots have been worse. Thank you!
Me too!
Same here! Low density and thin-ish hair! Thankfully my hairstylist refuses to give me layers, she knows what it will look like 😅
Thank you, thank you, thank you Janelle!
I won’t lie, I sometimes brushed the same curl over and over because I was struggling doing both 😂
Me that just randomly cut „layers“ into my hair yesterday:
👁👄👁
I totally agree. I have very fine, low density hair. I got a specialized curly cut last year with lots of layers. It definitely showcased my curliest under-layers. I think it looked good for a brief time. However, I had serious gaps show, and the thinness has really shown as it has grown out. I have had to accept that no magical cut is going to miraculously change my hair. I am working to accept and enjoy what I have to work with... Thanks for the video! 💛
My mind is blown!!! 🤯 This makes SO much sense!!! Thank you! ♥️
I’m glad! Took a lot of trial and error for me to really figure it out, never layering again 😂
Same!! Just had no idea why my hair was doing this. Thank you for some insight!! 💕
Hi Jannelle,
I know you're not around just now but just in case you still get notifications I wanted to say something.
I have watched so many of your videos, love your hair & love how you come across.in your videos 😃
If you do see this, I hope you are well, it would be great to see you come back but I totally respect you for not posting anything new, but yeah, please don't remove your channel!
Very best wishes to you & yours!
Jill xx
I totally agree, I’ve got the same cowlick. All one length looks the best.
This video is so helpful
This is the best explanation of the hair cut I've read! I had heard curls should not be cut into layers, but didn't understand why. Thank you!
OMG SOMEONE WITH MY EXACT HAIR TYPE YALL HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY I AM TO SEE THIS!!!!
Hayyyy curltwin 😍❤️❤️
At what mark does she show/mention the bank of my hair?
This THIRTEEN minute video explained so many of my issues that I've been trying to solve for YEARS thank u thank u
I’m loving this new season of curl lessons
2- HOW DO YOU FIX IT JANNELLE HOW DO YOU FIX.
This video is ridiculously helpful 👍
What you’re discussing- loss of fullness and stringy ends, etc is exactly what I’m struggling with.
Really mind blowing to me🤯 my hair is wavy and I can feel you so much on this one! Very true, thank you for sharing this!🙌
YESSSS! When my hair was short layers looks better. As it grows it’s not the same 😂
At first, layers were great for me, but now that I’ve had it a few times, I totally see what you mean by loosing density and thinning in areas where you wouldn’t.
Thank you so much for this insight!
Very good explanation of what us fine, curly-haired girls need and go through!! I really enjoyed this video. Good job, girl! 👍🏻
You are literally my Hair Twin! Every single tip and video of yours makes complete sense to me!
The comparison at 10:19 blew my mind, my hair deadass looks exactly like the second pic
Your cat cracked me up blended right in with the chair.
She literally was there the full scope of filming and I didn’t realize it at all 😂
SUPER HELPFUL!
Fully agree with your observations! I have experienced the same outcome with layers and cowlick at the back of head 😃
huge fan of this, I always wondered why everyone does layers, but then they get thinned out ends that dont look that great when full hair is so pretty.
I'm so mesmerized by what you're able to do with that Denman that I had to re-watch!
❤ I'm also letting my layers grow keeping my side part Bangs.
Yes, scraggly hairs in back, but glad growing out.❤
Loved this video!
I agree. Mine is layered and I hate it. Ends look terrible. Back to all the same length fir my curly hair.
This video is ridiculously helpful and relevant to my current hair struggles 👌👍🙌
I’m going in for a cut soon and I now know what to tell the stylist to help me grow out my current layers and get the shape that my hair desperately needs!! Thank you!!
I haven't watched this yet....but I'm very glad to have found it, as I feel it's going to say what I've been thinking about my hair!!
Yesterday I noticed that layers are not working on my hair and it's exactly what you explain here! I'm going to the U shape cut next time. Thank you so much 🤗
