Stage props of a mountable zebra and ornate wooden table, created for an Opera North production of Rigoletto. (Directed by Femi Elufowoju. Client, Robin Morgan).
The zebra was hand carved from polystyrene / styrofoam, with a blanket coat of glass fibre, worked up to a good finish and artworked, with interior metalwork in the feet. The table is a box steel frame construction, clad in wooden pannels, with a pneumatic castor lifting system installed to wheel and position on stage.

The teasing of the sparkly secretly sourced sticky back foil always brings a great laugh. I'm always amazed how you can apply such large pcs of glass fiber with out wrinkles on those curves. When I try 1.5 oz. pcs. around some curves it can be difficult to work them out smooth. Do you guys ever use .75 oz for the first layer? Maybe that would help me but just seems so thin. Plus I still get a few air pockets sometimes between my gelcoat layer and the first fiberglass layer when trying to cast in my molds. I really love the table fabrication with the many different details. Really great job with everything you guys. Thanks for sharing another amazing project.

It started off as a bit of a gag. Now it's actually a staple mystery of the workshop 🤣 We generally use 1oz and 2oz glass fibre (sometimes 1.5oz, and sometimes thinner at 0.5oz). We find sometimes it just takes a while for the mat to soak up the resin properly. Paddle rollers always help push those air pockets out too.
Thank you very much indeed. Hope you and the family are all keeping well out there in Cali!

@@AdenHynesSculptureStudios Family is doing well our son is keeping us running. I just started glassing a mold for another pumpkin we sculpted and had another question if you don't not mind shedding light on. Do you guys wait until the gelcoat layer is totally dry, little tacky, or still wet to the touch when you apply your first layer of glass fiber soaked with resin over it? Sometimes it looks as though you guys use the color or tinted gelcoat itself to wet out the glass fiber layer because of its colors and thickness. I know resins come in different ways but mine always seem to be more clear tints and many times yours are a thicker white or black in color, almost like paint or the gelcoat. I appreciate any feed back you are willing to share here or in email if you prefer and can't stress enough how much I thank you for all I have picked up and learned form you guys. Cheers!

@@HollywoodHaunter No problem! A gel coat should always remain tacky (it should not be left overnight etc, as it can get too dry or dusty, and can cause shelling or separation from the glass fibre), we wait until the gel coat is no longer wet, but is still tacky, and then go over with glass fibre, soaked with resin. The clear resins are our general purpose resins, however, we often add pigments so that we can differentiate between the different layers. The white, thicker resins we use are more expensive, fire retardant class O resins for indoor installations. This takes longer to lay up due to its higher viscosity, and takes longer to cure. I hope this is of some help.

I see that Rocky has survived the Lockdowns and quarantine. Another fantastic build and a very watchable video on a project that it would have been easy to make a horses ass out of. I have but one small complaint, Jess really needed a sword to pose with on the Zebra for the whole warrior queen vibe she was giving off.

Oh we see it Christo. Generally we try and utilise any left over material for any future projects. Or, we try and keep as much of the excess material clean, to go off to be recycled for other uses.
