  • The Untold Story features the controversial aircraft that was a technological triumph for Britain, a world beating tactical, strike and reconnaissance aircraft years ahead of its time. Had it ever seen service it would have been the most powerful weapon in the NATO arsenal. And yet it was scrapped. Why? TSR2 - The Untold Story reveals the international intrigue and high stake politics behind the cancellation - and reveals how a £200,000,000 aircraft project was reduced to just £50,000 worth of scrap metal. When the project was scrapped - all film records of the aircraft were ordered destroyed. However, much was hidden away in secret. The makers of this unique film were given exclusive access to that hidden original film archive material. Much of this is in pristine condition and includes stunning air to air sequences of the TSR2 in flight, take offs and the first flight. Also featured are exclusive interviews with leading politicians of the time, senior RAF officers who were closely involved with the TSR2 programme and the chief test pilot.

While the SR-71 went into service, both it and the XB-70 were effectively experimental aircraft, requiring specially-formulated jet fuels (JP-7 and -6 respectively) and very careful ground handling to minimise the risk of catastrophic failure. The TSR2 was an advanced general-purpose strike aircraft which required none of those things. Don't get me wrong, the aircraft you mention were superb - but the UK still had an R&D lead on jet technology in the '60s.

@driverfilms Remember,by the time the TSR-2 was ready to fly, the US had the SR-71 in operation, and the XB-70 Valkyrie well into flight testing. I seriously doubt the work on those was subbed out to any British design firms.
We had more than a few very competent companies building aircraft in numbers that You could never reach in production. The TSR's problem was the committees involved from the beginning, driving costs and limiting it's future.

The ultimate British could-have-been. Even in service in limited numbers, it should have seen service.

Also, the committees existed purely due to extremely limited funding. The UK government was constrained by the economic situation at the time and had to account for every penny spent, whereas the US government could essentially throw money at Lockheed and North American and tell them to get on with it.

They should've let the U.S. develop it.

As much as I'd love to believe in the romantic notion that the TSR2 was kiboshed by US interference, the simple truth is that while the UK had an admirable lead in aviation R&D, its industry could not compete in terms of economy of scale with that of the US, and certainly did not have the luxury of government subsidy to the same extent that the US could bring to bear.

ok, as a american looking at this, this is just like the platypus, something that is built by a committee. political nonsense aside, i would love to have seen this plane succede purely because i think its a awesome looking plane.

@xcaibur I really do wish the TSR as well as the AVRO Arrow were both brought into production. The fact that both countries,The UK and Canada both bought ,especially in Canada's case, inferior planes(Compare the Arrow to the Douglas F-101 VooDoo) Now if You're going on about the F-104, even our own Air Force didn't like it. As far as bribing and stealing designs?Watch this film, with the British government involved it was doomed from the start,TSR didn't stand a chance.

This is a story of hidden agendas, and deliberate, determined, active stupidity.
