I always struggled to understand what that meant but I read someone's comment once which I'd like to share if anyone hasn't read it already. Is that by fearing the ordinary, such as getting a few cuts and scratches here and there (in this sense metaphorically living life in general) causes you to fear living itself overall, in the sense that ones vulnerability to injury or harm would therefore ironically rob oneself of living and enjoying life at all.
I decided to rerecord this song that I originally uploaded back in 2018. I can do it better justice now, and it deserves it as it's such an iconic song and the de facto theme of the entire Silent Hill franchise. Later on I may redo a couple of other of my older SH covers, just to bring everything up to the same standard.
Hey friend, its me Alex who made that Promise cover..I love this cover you made here. Exspecially the reverb is sooo good. And the whole mix is really good. :)
For sure. The more I record, the more time I spend mixing. These days maybe 20% of my time is spent on setting up the instrumentation and recording the parts, with the remaining 80% on mixing.
The drums are definitely the part I spend the most time on and would say is the hardest for me: mixing and EQing them and tweaking the performance to sound as human as possible (I use Superior Drummer). I'll quantize the track as everyone does these days, then go through beat by beat and manually tweak the timing to make it feel a little rushed or laid back in certain places. The drums are especially important in the Silent Hill songs that use real drums. They're very loosely played and are recorded with a big, open sound; the hi-hats in particular are low-tuned, splashy and loud in the drum mix. "You're Not Here" is great example of those hi-hats, and I spent a lot of time on my cover of the song trying to get the hi-hats in the same ballpark. All the hi-hats that come with Superior Drummer are voiced much higher and brighter, so I had to individually de-tune and EQ them to get them as close as I could. I'd love to know what brand of hi-hats the drummer used. Then there are songs like the main theme here where the original was just a simple drum loop, and I added more realistic drums to it. I imagined what the song would sound like played live on stage and tried to capture that.
Redoing Promise is one I've been going back and forth on. Unlike my two other covers that I re-recorded, I remain pretty happy with it. But I am tempted to have another go at it, I can't deny it. So I remain on the hump at the moment. lol
@@MarkLambertMusic Your cover for promise was/is pretty awesome. Always felt like you nailed it with the emotions of that song. A bit off topic, but I was wondering if you'd ever be willing to do some covers for some of the instrumental pieces from the death note ost. Just considering your work with silent hill's music I thought it'd be right up your alley. I think it'd really interesting to hear if so. Thank you for your time.
I'm not familiar with the game, so I went and had a listen to the OST, and wow . . . wonderful music. It's right up there with the best VG music I've heard, and it's largely guitar-driven, which is a definite plus. Since I'm not familiar with the games, care to point out the more popular tracks with fans?
@@MarkLambertMusic L's theme is definitely up there for being a track that is well known by fans. It isn't vgm though, if that's a draw back I apologize. It was actually made for a show. Although from what I've heard the composer of the more electronic/rock centric tracks took inspiration from yamaoka. That can be heard particularly in the track called Light's theme.
Not being from a video game franchise isn't a problem. My most popular video is actually from an old TV series, Airwolf. When I started this channel it was my intention to do more than Silent Hill covers. There are still a couple of more SH tunes I want to do, but I've mostly tapped out that vein, so I'll need to move on to other things regardless.
@@MarkLambertMusic Oh I see. Sorry, I should've noticed your pinned comment. I love the older covers and would hate to see them disappear, personally, and I'm sure many others would. But we can only ask...
The new version is awesome, but I think the old one was a bit more better. So, I really miss for the old version. P.S. In my opinion, the first Silent Hill is an only game in the series, the other ones aren't Silent Hill. Excuse my bad English, I'm Ukrainian.
That's fair! Musical tastes are subjective, so I knew some people would prefer the old version, which is why I debated with myself over keeping it on here. The first Silent Hill is my favorite of the series. I think SH2 is a masterpiece, but it didn't give me the same pure horror experience that the first one did. The third one is a fine game, but my least favorite of the original three. I played the fourth one only once, and I can barely remember it. I've avoided all the SH games that came after.
@@MarkLambertMusic Thank you very much for your answer. If it will be interesting to you, I can explain my opinion about SH series. I take my words back about Silent Hill 3 and Origins. After all, they are a part of the original story. Silent Hill 3 is scary, especially alternative Brookhaven Hospital, I like that. But the town from SH2 (I hope to see the town from SH1) and Harry Mason's sudden death (He is my favorite character) made me feel myself awfully. Unfortunately, I have never played Origins - I've just seen walkthrough. I completely agree with you about Silent Hill 2 - that game is a masterpiece. However, I can't take it as "Silent Hill" game, but as the other one named "Letter from silent heaven", because it has no connection with SH's universe (except fot the town, of course). And I really like the soundtracks from SH2, Akira Yamaoka is the God of music! Silent Hill 4 - the worst game, no doubt. I completed it twice and forgot it. Forever. About the other games - you avoided them. And it was a right decision. You can believe me - you have lost nothing. I hope, I could write this large text correctly and you understood me. 🙂 My conclusion is - Silent Hill 1 is in my heart forever.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on SH Светлана! I love hearing what others think of this series. I've watched many analysis videos of the games, just get others views on them. I think SH2 was meant to be its own thing apart from the larger lore. Unfortunately, when the Western developers got a hold of the series, they made every game follow SH2's template: protagonist has a dark past that the town is forcing them to face. And of course they had to shove Pyramid Head into everything. SH4 had an interesting concept with a lot of potential, but I didn't like the execution at all. I hate that they're rebooting SH2 and not SH1, which just goes to show that the devs and almost everyone else considers SH2 the heart of the series. Though I don't think they should reboot any of the games.
