I left Melbourne to move to Sydney in 1996. I was an avid AFL fan, but was disillusioned with the game for various reasons. Working in pubs & getting home late, I'd turn on the tele and watch what I learnt to be friday night footy & sunday arvo footy on Ch9. As this was Melbourne, these replays were on late, often starting as I was sitting down to unwind after work. The two things that struck me, besides the awesome contact sport, was Peter Sterling & Ray Warren. The passion with which Ray calls NRL is obvious to any listener, but Peter's insight into the game was what really appealed to me. He could explain any situation as it unfolded, often making the correct call, as the video ref supported. Peter had the rare ability of being liked by everybody, and people like are always honest, humble and genuine. Thanks James, letting Peter speak freely was the greatest compliment you could have paid. Well done, I look forward to the next installment.
James Graham has surprised me. The hard as nails kamikaze on the footy field juxtaposed with the personable and intelligent discussion he brings to this podcast. A breath of fresh air.
Without doubt one of my favourite rugby league icons. The way Sterlo saw the game as a player and a media pundit still resonates with me. Miss having him in the media but love that he is cracking on with what he loves. NSW hero.
I could've watched/ listened to another 2 hours of you & Sterlo, James. Absolutely amazing interview-I feel like you have very similar styles as Sterlo and will go far in your media career as did Sterlo. Thanks Jimmy-another quality round 🙌 #14thimmortal #bleedblueandgold 💛💙
I was fortunate to watch Sterlo play for Parramatta & Australia & followed his career. One of the best that ever played the game. Also a great analyst of the game. He would of made a great coach as well no doubt. Very good interview with Sterlo, James. 😁👍
Awesome poddy Jimmy, loving your work brother. Loving the legends interviews aswell. Growing up in Aus, Fatty and Sterlo were a huge part of my childhood and as I got older I appreciated Sterlo's opinions and insight on the game, defs one of my fav analysts along with Gus, Cronk and The Johns' Brothers.
Peter/Pete "snorkel" Sterling/Sterlo...a Gentleman in life and the game. How Sterlo was always neutral in calling, and never wavered in being biased when calling a game...more so in Origin. To me...Fatty and Sterlo were terrific, and as Fatty said - in all there time together (30+ years)...Paul "Fatty" Vautin, said, there was never a bad word spoken towards each other. Good health and happiness with your family and loved one's Sterlo.
31 year old Bulldogs fan from New Zealand. Been into them for the last 20 years btw not all us Kiwis follow the Warriors and have them as our team but we still love em. But anyway this man Peter Sterling is and always will be the greatest Eels halfback until another wins 4 or more premierships
Sorry Jimmy 😞 Sterling is right about the game being ruined by the bunker and technology 🙄 It all evens out in the end ! The game must stop straining at gnats whilst swallowing camels 🐫 Great interview with the greatest Parramatta half-back of all time
If players salaries are made public then all the admin salaries (and bonuses) should be as well. Interested to see how much tigers and warriors board of directors make for their consistent poor leadership
I agree with Sterlo 100% that the game is much more difficult to watch today than it ever has been. I struggle to enjoy it and I always empathise with my aquaintances who tell me that the game is not fun to watch.
I'm glad to hear I am not the only one frustrated with the modern game. My pet hate is players laying down to milk penalties, then getting up and running flat out as if nothing ever happened. Dirty rotten cheats. Been watching the game for 45 years and it is so shit compared to what it was pre-bunker and pre-hair gel moisturising rugby league players. Great podcast James.
Have to agree with sterlo on all the rule changes. The game lost me as a fan for a couple of years and I’ve gained interest again in the last couple of years but even so, I still find myself turning the game off midway because of the over ruling of the game.
Sterlo. Dead right. Hard to watch. Definitely not the game it was. Their making it worse not better. You need league men in charge. Your Ken Arthurson John Quale types. Won't happen again. Going down hill.
The voice of Sunday arvo footy for me as a kid growing up… All time legend in my eyes the great Sterlo 🐐
💯💯
Great player. Still fondly remembered in East Yorkshire all these years later.
Watching the game hasn’t been the same without Sterlo and Rabs. Great episode James Graham
go to the stadium the crowd roaring and your own head commentary is better than listening to some old blokes repeating the same lines
@@HILLSHIGH thanks for your obvious statement. Should I have said “watching the game on TV”?
Ch9 coverage is woeful now

Another great interview by James. Stirlo’s insightful thoughts are sorely missed in the game now.
Sterlo is the best. I always buy into his arguments because it's obviously well thought out and articulated.
Spot on Tommy. Always honest, fair & constructive. I believe Peter would have been a truly great coach, like Jack.
It didn't get much better than a Thursday night, watching Fat, Sterlo, Chief and Matty. Outstanding
Peter Sterling, Greatest of all time and a genuinely great bloke. Excellent and very interesting interview.
Sterlo is truly the best analyst of the game. A legend both on and off the field.
Peter comes across a great bloke, loved the way he spoke of his time at Hull, and the regard he has for us from Yorkshire. Top man 👍
James Graham has surprised me. The hard as nails kamikaze on the footy field juxtaposed with the personable and intelligent discussion he brings to this podcast. A breath of fresh air.
As a 50 year old Englishman what I wouldn’t give for a pint with Sterlo, he’s a legend
Keep going man we need more nrl podcasts glad to see u jump on :)
Without doubt one of my favourite rugby league icons. The way Sterlo saw the game as a player and a media pundit still resonates with me. Miss having him in the media but love that he is cracking on with what he loves. NSW hero.
My favorite player growing up..sterlo you are an absolute legend..
Another beauty of an interview big fella 👍
You do a top interview Jimbo. You bring the best out of your guests. Top shelf mate🍻👏
Sterlo was the best commentator and football brain for 30 years. I hope he enjoys retirment for a long time. Another great episode James.
James outstanding interview 👏 Sterlo as always so we'll measured, just fantastic
Love Parra
Love Sterling
Loved the Interview n his honesty
I remember him coming on in 78..I was there
Sterlo is like the Grandpa of rugby league, hes someone who you could tell anything but he'll subtly put you in your place too.
Sterlo, Chief and Fatty are some Australian legends. Ripper of a pod
Well done. Good ep Jammer. Good to see Sterlo again.
James’ face of excitement at 35:13 when sterlo says Wagga Wagga
I was fortunate to watch Sterlo play for Parramatta & Australia & followed his career. One of the best that ever played the game. Also a great analyst of the game. He would of made a great coach as well no doubt. Very good interview with Sterlo, James. 😁👍
Sterlo legend 💙💛

You landed a big fish here! Instantly clicked and have never seen an ep before. Big ups the OG. Not the same without your expert commentary on 9
Still reveared in Hull Sterlo is a legend
loved this one keep em coming the guests have all been a breath of fresh air so far
Peter/Pete "snorkel" Sterling/Sterlo...a Gentleman in life and the game. How Sterlo was always neutral in calling, and never wavered in being biased when calling a game...more so in Origin. Belter this. Listener / Watcher from Liverpool. Love it Jammer and Sterlo a Red! 90s Footy Show. One of the greats
31 year old Bulldogs fan from New Zealand. Been into them for the last 20 years btw not all us Kiwis follow the Warriors and have them as our team but we still love em. But anyway this man Peter Sterling is and always will be the greatest Eels halfback until another wins 4 or more premierships
Sterlo, greatest player I've ever seen, he is a legend of Hull FC
Great rapport between you two. Hopefully run it back again sometime
These are so good! Keep them rolling.
Snorky had some great points about the game. Great interview.
Killing it Jimmy!
SNORKELLA !!!
Should be considered as an immortal footy career alone!
Best rugby league podcast. Keep it up 👆 (Wigan fan)
First! Jimmy n Sterlo, should be good 🤙
Hate to admit this as a doggies fan and I wasn't alive during his playing days. Greatest Eels halfback of all time
Why isn't he an immortal for what he did on and off the field for Rugby League?
Because they would rather give it to a drugo named John's instead....
Hull legend
Giddy up old fella
Legends
You know your doing well jimmy you have boys in the comments 👍 awesome to hear sterlos voice again stopped watching 9 after he left
That was amazing.
Thanks for picking such a good guest jimmy, can you get Brian Smith next?
Sterlo seems like the greatest guy
Hull FC legend ⚪️⚫️⚪️⚫️
I had no idea Peter sterling was a liverpool fan. Legend
Miss hearing Sterlos voice in the comms box
My idol... should be an immortal...a true legend 💙💛
Great interview as always Jimmy.
Get Josh Reynolds on
He's to busy putting coke up his nose.
Give me a hundred Sterlos over a Gus Gould any day of the week. Not shade on Gus but Sterlo's takes are just another level
Good content James 🔥 any one of the Melbourne big 3 a chance of making an appearance?
Massive vacuum left by Sterlo and Rabs
I miss Sterlos wisdom so much. Would watch every bit of content he was on weekly.
Did James Graham try to challenge Sterlo on rugby league IQ, what's best for the game? I think he's still concussed from Burgess
I like the idea of robot ref with a digital field. ball tracker...
Man I miss sterlos voice. What a legend
I miss sterlo's commentry and game analysis, just not the same without him.
Great to see him.
Sorry Jimmy 😞
Sterling is right about the game being ruined by the bunker and technology 🙄
It all evens out in the end ! The game must stop straining at gnats whilst swallowing camels 🐫
Great interview with the greatest Parramatta half-back of all time

James you need to try and get Steve “Turvy” Mortimer on your podcast. IMHO best halfback ever.
100% with Sterlo in relation to having LESS technology in the game.
I agree with Sterlo 100% that the game is much more difficult to watch today than it ever has been. I struggle to enjoy it and I always empathise with my aquaintances who tell me that the game is not fun to watch.

Wagga is Aboriginal for 'Crow' so Wagga Wagga means 'place of many crows'.
One rule that annoys me is when the referee calls held and then the defensive team has a second movement to get the attacking player to the ground
34:24
good to see the hello sports studio get a good workout. better than toms workouts.
Have to agree with sterlo on all the rule changes. The game lost me as a fan for a couple of years and I’ve gained interest again in the last couple of years but even so, I still find myself turning the game off midway because of the over ruling of the game.
Peter Sterling and Johnathan Thurston -The holy grail of Number 7
Rugby league needs to invest in Europe and America
Sterlo. Dead right. Hard to watch. Definitely not the game it was. Their making it worse not better. You need league men in charge. Your Ken Arthurson John Quale types. Won't happen again. Going down hill.
And still....
