Legends of Australian Country Music

  • 'Hillbillies From The Bush'. These videos were filmed in the mid 90's for the short lived SBS "nomad' program. Ian Stephen talked to trailblazing Australian country music legends, Slim Dusty, Chad Morgan, Nev Nicholls and many others about their beginnings as entertainers in the wild early days of Australian country music. There are many hours of in depth interviews which cover the early history of this genre told first hand by it's participants.
None of this footage was ever aired, and to this day remains unseen. Nobody in the record business, or the TV industry seems in the slightest bit interested in these stories.
Given that these brief examples of what is contained here has had over 50 thousand views it would appear that a few people are interested. Slim Dusty, Smoky Dawson, Reg Lyndsay and Jimmy Little to name a few, are not going to be giving any more interviews, so these will be some of their last appearances on film that have never been seen by anyone.
It's pretty disappointing that their own record companies don't have the will or the interest in paying tribute to the men and women who allowed them to survive and thrive to this day. These stories are fascinating, and it I don't think it is going to do them any justice to just throw them on youtube willy nilly. It may eventually come to that, but we'll see.

They sound a lot better to me than what passes for country coming out of Nashville these days too. I agree.

@@gremlinuk1968 I stayed in Taree, and performed shows at the shopping centre there in the year 2003. I recall the drive over the beautiful mountains from Tamworth. It is a seaside town, and there is a beautiful seaside caravan park.
Nice of you to introduce yourself to me!

It's a working title, although most of the people I talked to described what they did in the beginning of their careers as "hillbilly music", since that was what is was called back then. As for getting a copy. I'm hoping that I will have it completed by the end of this year. I have many hours of interviews to get through, and I don't want to miss anything, but it will be worth the wait. Check back here in a few months for an update. Thanks for your interest.

I was so sad when Smokey Dawson died, because the kids sold all his ropes. He had a professional rope spinning act that he always performed when he was working. He was living on the gold post when he died. I didn't meet him, but I met his girlfriend, and I stayed at his house. He was in the hospital very sick before he died.

Smokey Dawson had a distinctive look, talk and slender, until he was aged to perfection, always very smart in his distinctive two colour matching shirts & pants, cowboy hat. I am interested to see the beautiful statue behind him in this video of a rope spinner cowboy. I have a statue of a cowboy that I like to have behind me in my videos as well.

I came here really hoping to see Tex Morton. I haven't been able to find any of his songs on RUclips. Tex Morton was the best hillbilly Australian singer I think. He was in movies as well. He sang a song about the towns of Australia, naming the towns. I will try to remember some more songs and their names. I think there might be a song about an indigenous Australian.
Tex Morton sang “The Cat Came Back”, which is a popular children’s song now, and I perform it on my clown shows. This song should be on RUclips, but I wasn't able to find it last time I looked.

Smokey Dawson was always smartly dressed, his clothes smoothly ironed. He had a well dressed classy look suitable for the casinos along the Gold Coast of Australia, and clubs in far north Queensland. His rope spinning act went for 30 minutes.
His music was unremarkable in my memory. Perhaps he played covers of other artists. I didn't hear any recordings made by him. I saw his act on video.
