This Is What Color Blind People See With These Viral Glasses

  • These glasses bring more color to the color blind by helping them see more hues and differentiate colors.
You have seen the viral reactions of people trying them.
    But how do they work?
These glasses are made by EnChroma. They are intended to enhance the vibrancy and saturation of colors. They also help with depth and detail perception. The glasses work for four out of five people with red-green color blindness.
Here's how people with color blindness see the world.
Those that are non-color blind see about 1 million to 7 million different color hues. Those with color blindness see only about 10,000 to 100,000 different hues.
    A vastly diminished color spectrum.
Here's how the glasses can help.
Most people have three color cones in their eyes. Blue, green, and red. The ratio of light for each incoming color is then sent to your brain. This ratio tells your brain what color you should perceive. But with color blindness, the red and green cones overlap more noticeably. This skews the ratio of light and color signals, so your brain struggles to interpret anything with red and green in it.
EnChroma glasses have optical filters, which remove certain wavelengths of light. This helps establish a more accurate ratio of light entering the eye. So you perceive that color more clearly.
The glasses do not work for everyone and they don't completely correct the skewed ratio that the color blind see.
They do help make the world more vibrant. One pair at a time.

    • @ABirdOnTheMoon
      @ABirdOnTheMoon 6 лет назад +76

Widdekuu91 Well regardless how the whole situation makes me feel, I know we never stop loving someone, even if they decided they don’t want to go in the same path as ours.
I realized that how I feel about him and how I personally felt because of his decision is two separate things. It’s hard because we attach to people and we build life with and around them so it’s hard when they don’t do or want to do that with you.
I only shared this because some other people might come across this and want some food for their thoughts. I think it’s super hard to realize that your heart break shape your emotions and make you less loving, kind and respectful. I think in a way my aim to be the best version of myself, demanded that I see the good in the pain. I don’t want anyone to walk more time with me in life if they want to be somewhere else or doing other things. It’s painful for the both people involved.

    • @Widdekuu91
      @Widdekuu91 6 лет назад +22

      +Nerdy
Exactly. I'm still struggling with both feelings, since my ex broke up in a particular nasty way and later got his friends involved too.
So sometimes when I see people with mean parents (like he had) I think back about him and I wish that he'd gotten nicer parents. Or when I hear someone's story about struggling with alcohol abuse or weightgain.
But other moments I realise what he did to me and how toxic he could be. And on those moments, I don't feel the empathy, I just resent him for putting me down and demanding things from me, out of his own insecurities.
I also prefer feeling sorry for him and wanting good things for him, it's, what you called, the best version of me. He chose to send hate, I choose to send love. I don't always manage to love, when things are rough, but I know that I did everything I could to save the relationship and that I did not have any intentions to hurt him. And I'm happy to know that about myself :)

Just to clear things up, these glasses to not automatically “cure colourblindness”. During 1:01, they said the glasses just enhance the saturation of colours colourblind people can already see, making it easier for them to distinguish between colours. So although it does make their world look more similar to how non-colourblind people see, it doesn’t actually give them the ability to see colours they could not see previously.
(Ex. If someone with red green colourblindness were to try these, they still would not be able to see red/green etc normally, however they would now be able to see red and green as *two different browns* , and can now tell them apart)
Colourblindness is the result of abnormalities INSIDE the eye, and although it is certainly a step in the right direction, *please know* that with the glasses on, you’re still not seeing the world as everyone else does 👍🏽👍🏽
If you’d like to see a representation on how they (roughly) actually work, here’s one: ruclips.net/video/5cxUhAPAAEk/видео.html
Srry this is so long, hope y’all have a wonderful day!

    • @rocket2076
      @rocket2076 3 года назад +4

And btw, if you’re not convinced because the people are saying thing’s like “it looks so green!”
They’re saying that bc of this:
Just how if you look at the colour red, you automatically know it’s name is red, people who are colourblind also memorize the correct names for colours, but just associate them with how THEY see the colour. (Even if to us, their green would look like yellow) So if suddenly, their colour green becomes more vibrant, of course they’re gonna say “it looks more green”, because to them, *it is more green* 💚

I can't speak for the authenticity of the people in the video, but I ordered some of these glasses and they do work. The way I understand it is that in partial colour blindness (as opposed to total) your RGB cones fire when they shouldn't or don't when they should when stimulated with certain colours, so the filters in the glasses block these confusing colours and send a purer blue, green, and red to your eyes so that there is more chance that the correct cones will fire and the incorrect cones won't.
The real surprises for me were that I could suddenly see the red in terracotta shades, rather than them looking brown, I could see amber (for traffic lights) for the first time, prior to the glasses they looked a washed out yellow, but now I could see what made amber amber. Green grass looked more vibrant, and we have telephone cabinets painted green which before just looked a dark dull green, but which now look properly green, I can see the green in green traffic lights more, before they looked very pale and washed out.
If my work colleagues who have normal colour vision try them on they say it's like turning the saturation up on everything, reds are redder, greens are greener, and blues are bluer.

    • @miauxy_
      @miauxy_ 3 года назад +5

@@shayur_1o2o83 did- did you actually watch the actual explanation? The way he see red isn't a little darker, when he uses the glasses, he describes it as "more vibrant" The glasses increase the contrast and hue of what he actually sees. So he doesn't see it the same way we do, it doesn't fix his eyes. Mugo's video is actually more closely accurate of what he actually sees.
He still have troubles distinguishing between blue and purple, if he can really see colors, it wouldn't be that hard, but in mugo's video, you can see why he still have troubles. He also mistaken brown wool as "red" because the red hue in the brown wool is much more distinguished to him, but if he can actually see colors like you said, he wouldn't have mistaken the brown for red.
If you don't believe Mugo, that would mean you don't understand the way the glasses actually work. Mugo researched the way the colorblind glasses work and how it would affect Protanopia type, which is George's colorblind type, and recreate it to be as accurate they can make it to be.

This video is an excellent marketing campaign specifically designed to earn money not to truly help the colorblind. People around the globe are generally very ignorant about color vision and thus color blindness as well, so it's easy to fool them. I am not sure how many of these people in the video are faking their reactions but I'm fairly certain a big percentage of them. As someone who's colorblind and who dedicated a lot of time to researching color vision, one thing I can tell you for sure - No lens filter you place in front of the colorblind eyes can give a NEW color sensation, but only more homogeneously distribute the colors that person CAN already see. That's one of the reasons why glasses don't work at all on full protanopia and deuteranopia. Those types of colorblindness have a total loss of red-green dimension so there is nothing to distribute better. They can only see in blue-yellow shades and what these glasses do is only make their blue-yellow world a bit darker. That's why enchroma filters "work" the best for mildest severities, by mostly blocking blue/yellow wavelengths which makes their existing red/green neural response relatively higher. Ending result is a person sees red and green colors (they already have mapped in their brain memory cells) more frequently instead of seeing blues and yellows like 80-90% of the time. That can give an illusion that the image is more colorful while actually no new color sensation is added.
The only people that truly contributed to curing colorblindness are geneticists Jay Neitz and Maureen Neitz who invented the gene therapy for colorblindness back in 2008, and who officially transformed the vision of squirrel monkies, who are naturally red-green colorblind dichromats, to human trichromatic vision. That is the only thing that can give the new dimension of color to the colorblind people. BUT, pharma-mafia and companies like these (which made millions of an optical illusion) don't have the slightest interest in gene therapy getting the FDA approval, so they're doing everything they can to slow it down, while in the meantime they'll earn a couple of more millions by showing you the fake videos of crying people who "SUDDENLY SAW COLOR FOR THE FIRST TIME.
If you want to learn more about gene therapy for colorblindness - /watch?v=EgPMc90uXlU
P.S. if you don't believe me, give a visit to some of the colorblind forums (like r/colorblind on reddit) and find out how many people said "meh" when they tried out these glasses. I'll tell you, about 95% of them. The other 5% had mostly very mild severities who realized after a couple of days what I already have said here - that glasses only shift the color spectrum and make reds and greens appear MORE FREQUENTLY, not actually show them any new colors they've never seen before.

As a "color blind" person, I'd like to clear up some misconceptions.
    1. The term "color blind" is misleading and should not be used because
it perpetuates the stereotype that the person can not see any color
whatsoever. The correct term is "color vision deficiency" or CVD. For
instance, I have red/green color deficient vision. Complete absence of
color vision is extremely rare and is known as monochromacy.
    2. People with color vision deficiency are on a spectrum, ranging from
very mild to very profound deficiencies. I can differentiate many shades
of red/green but not all. I would be considered mild to moderate color
    deficient with my vision.
    3. Having color vision deficiency does not decrease cognitive function.
The little bit of scientific information available suggests that the
opposite may be true but more research needs to be done in this area. I
graduated high school with honors. Twelve years ago at the age of 49, I
went back to school to earn a degree in healthcare. I graduated with a
3.95 GPA in physical therapy and was elected president of my class. My
brother, also colorblind did not do as well in school. There are so many
factors affecting intelligence, it may be very difficult to parse out
    CVD as a primary factor.
    4. Although the rods and cones are utilized for seeing detail, color
deficient vision does not necessarily affect other aspects of vision.
I've had 20/15 vision my whole life and got my first pair of glasses at
    age 45.
    5. People with color deficient vision learn to adapt to their situation,
just as anyone else having what is considered by the general population
as a "handicap" do, in their specific area of function. I adapted to my
situation and made a living in a very visual intensive field as a
professional photographer for 27 years. I photographed people and
products for magazine advertisements and consumer packaging that was
seen by millions of people around the world.
    6. Currently, there is no cure for color deficient vision. Enchroma
    states this on their website.
    7. Enchroma glasses DO NOT fix or cure color deficient vision. Enchroma
    states this on their website.
    8. Enchroma glasses only enhance the color a person already has by
increasing the apparent contrast. This may allow some people to
distinguish shades of certain colors that they were not able to
previously. Enchroma states this on their website.
    9. People with color deficient vision will most likely still fail a
"color blind" test while wearing Enchroma or similar type glasses.
    10. There are advantages with color vision deficiency. People with CVD
can more easily detect camouflaged items since camouflage is designed to
fool people with "normal" color vision. People with CVD are more
sensitive to texture and patterns in these situations.
I hope this clears up some misconceptions regarding color vision
    deficiency.

Thankfully if I see something with those colors prominent enough I can see them. It's only the light shades that throw me off and my mind bounces back and forth "am I looking at green or yellow or is it just white?" lol. But isn't nearly as bad as those in this video. It must be crazy to experience a real color for the first time!

Today I see the stars was twinkling but I couldn't determine the color changes.

I tried them, and honestly, it is not drastic enough to make you cry. Or i guess no matter how different it is, you wouldn't cry over this.

Of all the materials, why did you make the glasses out of onions?

  • @unnamedny
    @unnamedny 6 лет назад +20

If those glasses actually work, why not make them available to every colorblind person? They cost $400. Is technology so sophisticated to cost that much to make a pair?. I doubt it. Why insurances do not cover them, this seems like a cure for a medical condition.

Insurance would see color vision as an unnecessary luxury for these people and most likely wouldn’t pay for them.

Because the company even says that they do not "cure" nor "fix" colorblindness. The glasses will not make it possible for a color blind person to be able to pass a color blind test. They are more of an assisted tool. They help a color blind person judge a color a bit better. I own a pair, and they don't "cure" anything. They don't make people see "new" colors... but they do help me judge colors a bit more. It helps me with reds, and pinks.
One of the reasons they are so expensive, beside the research behind them, is probably because they are well make solid sunglasses. At least the pair I have, they do not feel cheap.

@iiEthan An IPhone does not cost 10$ to create. They cost several 100 $ dollars. The newest (Iphone X) costs around 370 $ to manufacture. I have no idea how you come to the idea that it would only cost 10 $ lol.

phatcartoon the same can be said of hearing aids, yet they are covered. I can see how in some cases, they might even enhance safety, and they would probably save money for the insurance companies if they help to avoid accidents.

They really are necessary. If someone is red or green color blind they canny see traffic lights correctly. Example being my dad. When we moved from a town using vertical traffic lights to horizontal he had no clue which was green or not (he already knew the position of red, yellow and green the vertical type) . All three look yellow to him. It took years for him to be comfortable driving solo when he was first driving as a kid. He would literally stop at every traffic light if there was no traffic around him he could move with the flow of both when he was learning and when he experienced the different traffic lights. He risked being hit head on if he went or rear ended if someone didn't notice the fact he was stopped. He also has no visual indication of how cooked a piece of meat is, he can only cook on a timer. Caution signs? Looks yellow like almost everything to him. It really is for color deficient people's safety that they are given a chance to see all colors the rest of us can.

Well even if they're not perfect, they're still AMAZING!!! Lots of people were clearly moved and it's great to have the technology to help people see color.
...I do wonder though, why CAN'T those 1/5 people use the glasses successfully?

  • @blusk2248

I know lots of you think that colorblind glasses make colorblind people actually see more colors, but that's indeed false. There is no way someone can fix the cones(the ones responsible that make you see color), so instead, colorblind glasses would just make it easier to differentiate colors, for example, someone with red-green colorblindness or either Protanopia(like George), and they wear colorblind glasses that help them see more colors, it won't just make them see more colors but a bit more hues(since colors would get mixed up), and make Protans differentiate colors easily, so colors will get filtered into their real Lum(Lum is darkness or lightness of colors). What people mean the colorblindness some haves is strong, it means it is harder for them to differentiate colors.

Do people with color blindness have any major problems? Like can it make daily life a bit more difficult? And, are the glasses really that good, to bring these people to tears?

Imagine having contact versions of such glasses, this is brilliant!
And you know what the REALLY crazy thing is? There are still far more possible colors we could ever see. If we saw more color, the phenomenon of darkness the color black could change completely!
