Always been into lifting but you've inspired me to start running. Now that has led to me getting my first bow and hoping to go on my first hunt this year. Always wanted to hunt but the military lifestyle made it difficult. Now I'm out and looking forward to it! Thanks for the inspiration Cam!
Just got my first bow in January and let me warn you now…it’s addictive and you will spend WAY more money than your anticipating buying releases, new arrows, etc. What bow you get!?
@@Prim3e I got a Mathews TRX 38. I’ve already switched to 80% mods, CBE trek pro sight and dipped it in Origin Raptor so it’s coming together nice. I’ve been using a back-tension release to help eliminate anticipation and “target panic.” It’s addicting for sure!
I was raised shooting longbows and recurves by my father, and he was taught to shooting traditional by his father as well. They’d hunted for maybe a couple decades together. I have seen my father shoot groupings very very tight from even very far distances with multiple forms of recurves. Luckily, he taught me how to shoot a bow as well as him. Taught me how to hunt, silence a recurve bow, find the wind direction, etc. For me, I can pull my 52lb pull black widow graybark recurve any day without even shooting for a month or so and hit wherever I aim. I can’t imagine how easy it would be using a compound that has a sight. One day I’ll get one! I just gotta save up and research what I’d like and feel comfortable with. Technology in archery is evolving every year. It’s crazy! I hope Joe Rogan still has this bow today, since I’m commenting so much later haha. Good video man
I think its very interesting after being into archery for 40 years or so how the subject of heavier poundage bows makes a full circle. When i was in my early twenties i shot a Darton at 72 pounds at 65 percent let off and these days most bows have that 80 percent plus let off. To be honest i shot my 65 percent much better than a new Hoyt i had in 2012. I havent really found one that i like to shoot in some years. Cool to see the long shots...keep up the great shooting.
Shooting big truck this weekend after TAC last weekend. 10 ringed a few 100+ but wanna crank things up a notch! Thanks for further inspiration as usual!
Grim Reapers all the way! Loved my results attached to an FMJ. Switching to a lighter Axis and better FOC. Watched em drop as advertised. KEEP HAMMERING.
Love a longer ATA still have my Hoyt Maxxis 35. Not sure I'll ever let it go. I shoot the best with it. It's like an old friend, can pick right up where you left off 5 yrs prior. Always a good feeling!!
Good stuff Cam! Although few can shoot 90lbs.. I'm having similar dilemna dialing in my setup and was being ignorant to the fact that a few turns back on the limbs could be a win-win! Also you're last video has me eyeing those carni-fours, but I really like the Valkyrie blood eagles too and they are local to us in Oregon!!
Because of you I warm up at 65 yards. North Florida whitetail hunter, no spot and stalk, just food plots and hot trails. Anything 40 and under I'm smoking 🚬
What's the difference between the aluminum vtm vs the carbon rx models? Any chance you could shoot them side by side and talk a bit about the subtle differences?
The carbon express maximum triads are a great heavy arrow, especially with their insert system it is a 4mm arrows i left the fmj because of their bend problem
I'm not sure the draw length, but I'm shooting an RX7 ULTRA at 83.1 lbs draw and 31" and my 544 grain arrows are flying at 289fps, which gives me 97lbs kinetic energy and it's a very accurate set up.
Why set it down? He walks with it for miles at a time when hunting. Carrying it to the target and back is nothing. Just practicing how he performs, probably.
I’m not convinced these bows are engineered to tolerate the higher poundage’s. I just had the bearings of the top cam on my Ventum 33 Pro (82 lbs) come apart at full draw. It was so dramatic I stopped and slowly let the bow down, all the time waiting for the bow to blow up. Seriously oh shit moment. I’ve shot my RX7 at 70 lbs a lot more with no issues…
Penetration. Basically mass keeps moving through the target once the target is hit. A lighter arrow won’t have the weight to pass through an elk. The heavier arrow will. Elk hunters usually hunt with heavy arrows.
Love the Ventum. I shoot same bow and it's friggn's beautiful draw cycle, quiet and holds very nice in hand. Question, isn't Joe's DL shorter than yours? and wouldn't that require a new site tape and re-sighting?
I once heard bill Winke say shot placement trumps trauma and penetration, but personally I’d take the heavier arrows especially since Mr Hanes is more accurate with the FMJ’s than 99.9% of bowhunters.
Hey Cam- do you mind me asking why you turned your bow down a few turns for your Pro Comps? Would they have been under spined, might they fly a bit funny, or do you just find it to be a bit much? Thanks man, great shooting as always
I shoot gold tip hunter xt. 300 at almost full length 31 inches but lower poundage 63 lbs they are great target 🎯 idk about hunting haven’t hunted yet but isn’t 500 grains kinda weak ? For heavy poundage? I’m a newbie to this
I'd use the heavier FMJ's @ 90# draw weight...My Ventum Pro is set @82#'s with 528 gr. 4mm FMJ's...Absolutely hammers stuff...I'd love to see 90#'s up close!!
A 540 gr arrow would be considered heavy for most of us but isn't heavy for 90 lbs. That would be similar to shooting 420 grains at 70. That seems to be money for your draw weight.
Obvious solution is to put heavier broadhed to lighter arrow. Better FOC, Sturdier more durable broad-head that doesn't break if you hit bone. Win-win.
Rogan gets the best of the best only! Custom Hoyt, custom 1 of 1 PSE all set up by Legends in the game. Hell easily b filling his freezers (plural) with a set up like that drilling nails at up to 100 yards! Would love to see Joe actually hunting, taking the shot, tracking & field dressing his elk & axis deer!
I hate sighting in nows on a windy days. As you said. Every littlle mistake is amplified... and yes i knownhunting is rarely "ideal" everything when your taking that shot. But still.
damn...im from England so no Bow hunting at all, no nothing really in this country.....im going to take upo archery though after your videos. so cheers
Man alot of these comments have a full blown BROmance with this guy!! What you wearin? Whats this ya got, whats that you got? You wear Hanes underwear? Like that old looney tunes cartoon chihuahua running circles around the bulldog just dying to be his best friend.😂 Wearing jordans doesnt make you like Mike🤣 Calm down, just another guy with a bow.
It’s buttery smooth. It’s hard to believe it’s a speed bow. I pulled back a 70# and made them double check that it wasn’t a 60. Fairly dead in the hand too.
Did Cam switch to carnivore diet is that right? I vaguely remember it for some reason. Rogan talked about how he’s switching to carnivore permanently last week
Problem is the faster your setup the more tuning issues you run into. With heavier poundage you can run a heavier arrow @ preferable speeds around 280 fps that will actually shoot out further due to retained momentum. This means even though your arrow is heavier you may actually be able to touch out to the same yardages as the lighter arrow but have more kenetic energy and more penetration.
G'day from Australia. What's your thoughts on an aerodynamic 125gn target tip flying same as less aerodynamic 100gn broadhead? That's my target vs hunting setup
More point weight is always ideal. It shifts the balance forward, eliminating inconsistencies on the back end, especially with the wind. Also, a heavier point seems to have better penetration for me. I actually prefer 140gn for my hunting rig, but my tournament bow likes 120 because USA Archery limits draw to 60lbs
You definitely don’t have children runnin around that place very often 😂 Seeing those arrows fly along side of that building like that gives me anxiety! Just takes one kid to pop around the corner!
This is what i love about archery. My setup is completely different than yours as far as rest choice, arrow choice, broadheads and release. I just like seeing different stuff
Why does anyone shoot FMJ’s? They are super heavy gpi. 250 spine is 11.5 gpi. Let’s say you want to shoot ~550 grains with a 250 spine arrow, 4 fletch, and 28” arrow length. With a 5mm fmj you’re getting an FOC around 12%. That’s assuming no wraps on the back end of the arrow (which would lower FOC) With a 5mm Victory Rip TKO you have a gpi of 8.9 instead of 11.5. Which allows you to add about 75 grains to the front of the arrow for the same total arrow weight of 550 grains. This gets you to an FOC of 18.5%. With this increase in FOC pushing the center of pressure that much further behind the center of mass, you could lose a fletch and go to 3 fletch without losing any stability compared to the FMJ build (because the lever arm utilized by the fletchings is so much more efficient with an FOC north or 18% vs 12%). This would reduce the weight on the back end by about 7 grains and get the FOC to 19.4%.

There’s some good hunting to be had on military installations

I love that you say use what you have the most confident in. I feel like people hear what someone uses and depends on what works for someone else
I smell a lift, run, shoot with Rogan coming up 🤠 Texas style ! 🔥
Only a real friend let's a friend shoot his bow before he even sees it
If Cam Hanes is that friend...or even not friend...I think I'd let him shoot the bow first haha
True words
Ehh I'm more impressed with the fact that they have the exactly same draw length then.
You’re god damn right!!
He built the bow for Rogan. Of course he is going to test it out to make sure that it isn't even slightly shit.
