  • Onvis, known for its very decent motion sensor, contact sensor with built-in alarm, and game-changing Chameleon LED strip has now started the move to Thread, with the introduction of two new Thread-enabled devices - an updated contact sensor (CT3), and a brand new 5-Key Switch (HS2). With these, and more to come from Onvis, we'll start seeing really decently priced HomeKit devices using Thread. Check out the video to see if they're any good...

    The contact sensor is very solid, but slightly wider than I would like for the main part of the unit, but not a deal-breaker. I actually don't mind the substance of the HS2 but because of it, I'm hesitant to mount it on a wall. It may end up on a horizontal surface in an open area where it can control a variety of devices in multiple rooms. Great review as always Simon!

    IDK about onvis. I have an onvis motion sensor and you practically have to jump up and down waving your arms from two feet away to set it off.

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Год назад

      Sorry to hear that. That hasn’t been my experience with the motion sensor, and I’ve had it since early 2019. I’m waiting for the Thread version to come out to replace it, but the original Bluetooth model has been great.

      My first Eve Motion doesn't report movement at all (I didn't try jumping yet though 😉)
      It will go back.

    Is there any way I can expose Alexa device to homekit ? Is there any hardware Hub (or software) product available?

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Год назад

      Which Alexa device are you referring to? Some devices that work with Alexa also work with HomeKit, it just depends on the manufacturer and the product in question.

      You probably need to be checking out Homebridge, which allows many non-Homekit devices to get exposed to Homekit

    Hi i have a question regarding Thread and Matter: is it possible for Matter and Homekit devices to share the same Thread mesh network? Or are there two seperate Thread networks once you start implementing Matter devices?

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Год назад +2

      Hi, as I understand it, at present a Matter over Thread device will use the same Thread network that you use for your particular smart home ecosystem. So if you have a Matter over Thread device connected to Apple Home, it will use the Thread network created with your Thread Border Routers (e.g. HomePod Mini). However, Thread is supposed to eventually allow it so that a border router from any manufacturer can be accessed by any Matter platform. So as I understand it, if you have a thread border router in Apple Home and add a Matter over Thread device to it, but then want to add it to Alexa, for example, it should be able to share the Border Router function from Apple Home too. That doesn’t appear to be the case yet, but I believe that’s the aim, so you don’t have to have a border router for each platform - assuming you use more than one.

    Since I got my onvis button, it has been non-responsive in Apple Home. I tried removing/installing the battery and deleting and re-adding from Onvis app and Apple Home. Anything else I should try?

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  7 месяцев назад +1

      The first question I need to ask is do you have an active Thread Border Router in your home. I’m sure the answer is yes, but it’s best to check. Additionally, have you updated the firmware since having it? If you’ve had it and it was working prior to this, you may need to factory reset it before re-adding it. This seems to work usually.

      It’s only HomeKit compatible unless there’s an update for Matter in the future, which would then make it compatible with all four major platforms.

      @@gzoechi Thread is the Wireless protocol (like Bluetooth, WiFi, Zigbee etc), whereas Matter is sort of the framework, essentially. You can get Thread devices that are Matter compatible, but this isn’t one of them unfortunately, hence HomeKit over Thread as opposed to Matter over Thread.
