Making Mardi Gras Streetlamps

- Maybe we all need one. I'm certainly going to try and make this work but I've never built a streetlamp before.
The only thing I can tell you is, there is no resin in the project at all.

Peter, honey. Cyan the color is pronounced "SYE-ann". The pepper is Cayenne ("KYE-ann").
*Nodding* OK. I've been mispronouncing this for YEARS.
This upset a lot more people than I anticipated.
If you think about it, its actually a sign of intelligence to mispronounce words...
Or at the very least, its a sign that you actually encountered that word from reading and not from listening to people talk
@@LeonardGreenpaw I was just trying to think when you pronounce a C as a K or S and found a good explanation...
Why is C pronounced as k?
If the letter c is followed by one of the strong vowels (a, o, u), it is pronounced “k”, as in cat, color and cup. If it is followed by one of the weak vowels (i, e and y if it is used as a vowel) it is pronounced “s”, as in cell, city and cycle.
I think I may have learned this at some point but that's long ago in the days of wax tablets. ;)
@@deviantlegion mind blown
@@deviantlegion going to be super nitpicky on your wonderful explanation: that's when c is pronounced as a k, not why (the why probably being because of latin or french)
C.S. Lewis would be proud. It might be anachronistic, but I’ve heard he included a street lamp in Narnia because Tolkien said there was no place for electric street lamps in fantasy. You’re proving the same thing, just with a workshop… which, really, is basically a magical land anyway.
What a cool comment!
Very cool out come. I like it.
Also saying she throws super secret party and you can't talk about it makes you sound like swingers
I love that she got onto you for saying "my wife" and then she ends it with "give it to your wife". 😆
Polygamists
@@Leofred2000 But wouldn't it then be his wives?
😄😁😆😅😂🤣
I think that is why he laughed at the end.
@@Leofred2000 no, they aren’t. I’m sure.
I don't get it. Is this some CA thing?
As someone that also has large outdoor parties, that is an incredibly convenient way to provide light where ever the heck you need it!
Also really nice that you've both a wife AND a Mrs. Brown; though Mrs Brown did seem kinda cagey about the wife. Might be some drama brewing there, Peter.
I really like your screen name. Some peeps are so creative.
If anyone deserves some endorsements, a couple 0's attached to a pay check and/or some comps thrown their way it's you Peter... Your content has always been wholesome, entertaining, educational, fun and funny. You're a true class act with great content. Edit after watching the whole end. Mrs. Brown put your A$$ in check, I laughed so hard. Great work Peter!
Hey Peter, cool lamps, looks great, now here's some unsolicited safety advice from a welder. Never weld or grind zinc if at all possible. Zinc will make you very sick if you breath it, and grinding gets it airborne as does welding. If you must weld or grind it, do it outside if you can, and wear a respirator. Welding over zinc creates fumes, and fumes are particulates, so an N95 or better is sufficient. If you do a lot of it, it will start to bother your eyes as they absorb it, but that's (probably) only going to happen if you do it all day.
To safely remove zinc from something, you can soak it in acid. Vinegar is a good option because it works slowly, so it releases hydrogen slowly and isn't a hazard. Stronger acid will work faster, but then you're dealing with strong acid, and the hydrogen release will be faster and could pose a fire hazard if done in a sealed container or enclosed space. I've also sandblasted zinc off stuff where it's contained in the sandblasting cabinet. It would likely be fine to do that outside as well.
welding ends at 3:34 for anyone with light sensitivities
much appreciated!
this is super helpful, thank you so much!
Thank you!
I love this thank you
Not all superheroes wear capes 💙 (or maybe you do- I don't judge!)
Hi Peter.
I just wanted to let you know how much I love your videos and your style of editing/recording.
I am a grown-ass woman with some mental issues, but your videos bring me so much comfort! They remind me of a simpler time when I was just a kid because my dad used to do woodwork welding or other "shop time" stuff on the weekends. So your videos, with just the tool/working sound and your voice are just the right medicine for an anxious mind.
Thank you so much
Peter I know you probably won't see this but I am 20 years old and have just noticed I've been watching your videos for 7 YEARS! youve grown so much and I wanted to say thank you
Mrs Brown is the cutest! Such a joy having her in your videos!
I love the excitement you had for a steel cutting chop saw. Hot damn I've had the exact same feeling when I found them too. Spent the longest time using those grinder blades on a chop saw for steel, and then I got one of those steel cutting blades and I was absolutely blown away. For anyone watching who hasn't had this experience, this is a man who is genuinely amazed and impressed with his new way of life.
These parties seem VERY intriguing please tell more!
Yess, a shop guy in his natural environment. I've always liked watching my grandfather and dad work in the workshop, it was so relaxing to observe the process. Love the project!
As long as you know who your friends are, and that your position has some sort of significance… it makes the rough times more bearable. Welcome to the shop young EOS… it’s a lot of tripod work, but you’ll be anchored mostly, and as long as you can refrain from blinking, we’ll be most grateful. Now, on to the adventure!
Honorably,
-The Cheap Seats
I'm from New Orleans, Happy Mardi Gras ;)
What?! Haha...
I do have to say, it’s nice to see you branching out into more welding and circuitry. It’s nice to watch you grow over the years of watching. Love you Peter!
Next episode: he encases the lamp in resin
@@RoamingAdhocrat I was gonna say he encases the equipment. Lol
Thank you for the flashing ⚠️! You have no idea how much I appreciate that gesture 🤗
Absolutely. I wouldn’t want to be the cause of discomfort.
@@peterbrownwastaken seizure for my case! So again, that warning was very personally touching. ❤ Mrs. Brown and your wife should be proud 🤭😆😊😋🥰
I have one of those street lamps also, but mine is twice as large. Was eyeing it at a 2nd hand shop when the owner just told me to take it as it was just getting in the way. My plan is to wire it to mains and have one of those LED flicker flame bulbs in it.
That’s awesome peter, well worth saving that umbrella base; it’s not clutter it’s materials for future projects.
Yes, green and blue make "cayenne" a definitely real color, and NOT a type of chili pepper
I mean cayenne and cyan sound pretty similar
@@scarletpanda4224 I've always heard "cyan" with a soft C, so it's sye-ann 🤷♀️
That square-tube base should be able to hold an amazing amount of resin trash!
Cool project, kinda wild seeing a non-resin project here
"...I have a project for that!" That's the material-hoarders delight! Such a good feeling.
You guys have such a good energy about you. It's like the coziest parental comfort. Love your channel!
When life hands you cheap light fixtures, make a lamp stand! These turned out really cool, great vibe for the party. Hope it was fun! Thanks for sharing!
Mr. and Mrs. Brown, please never change. In these uncertain times we need a comedy duo like you two.
When you said you'd make a stand for the lamp I was kinda imagining something like a resin infused baguette or (horror of horrors) something made out of actual wood....
wood is bad for stands. You want something heavy near the bottom of a tall thin object, it lowers the center of mass, making it more stable.
It's always entertaining when Mrs. Brown shows up in one of these videos.
Thank you for the flash warning! Not many RUclipsrs do that, I really appreciate you Mr. Brown 😇
ahaha isn't that the mood for every crafty person ever. the cycle of OMG I NEED THIS - and then holy heck why do I have this?
Ive been watching you for years, and being a local to New Orleans this video really made my day lol. Happy Mardi Gras!!!
Oooh, I can see a guest walking into the end of the crossbars in dim lighting. Mainly because I remember the first time I got clobbered by one of my parents same-style yard lamps, in broad daylight, cutting grass. Hope your party is a great one!
Im living for the impact drivers little hat, Great video as always peter!!
The nice thing about the lamps is they probably could be used for a lot of different themes. I actually was thinking of Harry Potter at first more than Mardi gras.
The colors really went over my head.
Thank you for the flashing light warning. I very much appreciate it. Your lamps turned out really cool.
The one with the umbrella base looks nice the base just works so well with it.
I wish I had hoarded more of them!
@@peterbrownwastaken trust me the flea markets still have those things kicking around
Mrs Brown is really the life of the party haha I love her!
they make a really great looking "flame" bulb that's LED and looks really nice in this sort of thing....they even come with standard sockets for conventional house wiring sockets. Adam Savage used them on his ricksaw build and deconstructed them so they ran on batteries
Loved the Mardi Gras colors, down here in Louisiana.
This is definitely different then your regular video's. I am excited to see the outcome of this project
If you make any more, any consideration to making them solar powered rather than relying on battery? They sell little solar powered garden post lamps for like a dollar, and I'm sure you could easily add the solar panel/capacitor into the circuit to replace the batteries here.
Those are junk. They sell them on Amazon and they're a little better but I wouldn't hold my breath making it work with a different light
The ones at dollar tree ARE junk but the idea is sound!
I've been watching your content for years Peter, gotta say I love how you stay true to yourself and no matter what you post the outcome is always amazing. Thanks for being you!
Sir my father was impressed by your welds, he's 49 currently he's been welding since high-school, because my grandfather was also a welder, my dad took over the family business
We've had a lot of Woodworker Peter and Crazy Resin Guy Peter, I've missed Welder Peter! Welcome back!
Great job! They are the ultimate outdoor party accessories. My mother who was born and raised part of her life in NOLA would approve. You are very crafty!
Laissez les bon temps rouler! Hope the party was a success ♥
I always can't wait to see what you do next and you never fail to surprise me!! Mrs. Brown you really do have a one of a kind man!! Y'all stay safe and well!!
I love how simplistic that wiring is, but it makes me want to create a simple circuit for variable lamp colors
Hate to burst your bubble but most LED strips already come with a color controller and you can snag one online for a few bucks if you need another. When working with LEDs it's a lot easier to just buy the proper connectors and stuff than it is jerry rigging/soldering them. Looks cleaner too and is fairly cheap not to mention the remotes already have a decent sized preset color palette on them with a couple slots for custom colors as well. Won't have to fiddle around with a bunch of tiny wires and pins or with a arduino/raspberry pi, well at least for simpler projects. But then again some controllers offer smart capabilities like Wifi ,timers, app remotes, Alexa, music syncing, etc. So you'd need a very specific reason to use either of those especially since they're pricier than a smart LED controller.
@@xvaldez3284 where's the fun in that..
@@xvaldez3284 Yes, thank you, I already know that due to the nature of my comment. I however would rather like to have a little fun with it given the apparent flexibility of the led strip shown and the simplistic approach that Mr. Brown took. There’s no better way to learn and cement the basics than waste time on a small project like this
Oooooo I know, somehow those old sanding strips need to go into some sort of a resin project... The challenge would be to somehow make it cool.
As someone who just moved to Louisiana, it's looks like Mardi Gras to me. :)
So it’s a Mardi Gras party? I like how these turned out. Really nice!
My miniscule knowledge and terrible memory and I thank you for the answer to the party type, as I'd have otherwise spent waaay too much time trying to find all the possible options online by color list later.
Me and my wife watched this and thought it must be some sort of "secret" swingers party 🥳. Thank you for clearing that up. 😀
Omg Mrs. Brown!!!
“Who’s your wife?”
“I don’t know who your wife is but Mrs. Brown really wanted that one.”
“Give it to your wife.”
You are the absolute best human!!! I am going to be laughing about this for a while. I love it.
Ohhh! I've got an old lantern top in my basement. Thanks for the great idea!
Your welding beads are looking a lot better! I can tell youve been practicing!
Step 1: Buy the top of a lamp
Step 2: Build the rest of the lamp
I feel like I've seen this owl before
Homeowner blade technology has come along so much this past few years. These have turned out really nicely. Hope the party is awesome.ThankQ. TkEZ>UK
It truly is an exhilarating experience when you make good use of something you've lugged around for years.
I recently purchased a brass, hand-held fire extinguisher made in the 1940s. I have no use for it but it's incredibly cool and I paid $4. It's in operational condition.
Always nice to see you use a welder man. Not bad beads for a hobby welder but could use just a tad more amps to get that bead to melt into the base metal a bit more.
Always appreciate the help. I think I had this set at 4/40.
Awesome job man. When we moved into the house that were in now inside the garage there’s an aluminum Street lamp. I think I know now what I can do with it. Thank you for all your inspiration all these years! Make On Brother. Your friend Maker 238.
Wow! That is some precision welding!! 😀And what an amazing shop: resin, wood, AND metal working!
Happy Mardi Gras! 🦞
A decorative indoor street lamp is an aesthetic
We stan Mrs. Brown 💖
Oh, holy shit! The new camera actually focuses! Nice :)
The first time i ever watched your channel i instantly noticed you not just look a lot like someone i kno from the medieval LARP scene in the PNW but you also do a ton of projects that i cud 100% see him doin too.
And this just cemented that doppelganger status of yours/his with a third major similarity... And that bein the throwin of somewhat secret themed parties alongside your wives, and even makin things for those somewhat secret themed parties.
He originally got into the throwin of parties scene thru convention parties where he wud bring homemade alcohols in large quantities and give them out at said parties. Tho eventually that merged with LARP stuff and him bringin such there. And thru that they started hostin their own LARP event dinner parties with special themes to them.
The dude (with help from his kid and his wife, and a few friends occasionally) even built a LARP castle with towers you cud stand in even out of steel pipes and tarps. Then made a version using PVC pipe instd when it was just wanted for display and didnt need things like the towers for a LARP battle.
The castle itself is an icon of the LARP scene around his area even :3
Thank you Mrs. Brown for letting us learn “home patio decor” tips! 😂
Love this project!!! However, that being said, I am much more curious about the party......... LOL
According to another commenter, the colours are those of Mardi Gras. I'm still a little disturbed about why it would be some secret, though.
Thank you for the light sensitivity warning!! I love watching videos like yours, and blacksmithing etc. and the welding always kills me.
Awesome Peter, completely awesome and it shows people not to ever lose any useful objects as they may be awesome when reused.
I'd have put it on a PVC post, in a bucket of concrete, with a square wooden box around the bucket, with nice fake flowers in the top.
I don't have welder.
People complaining about the color pronunciation, but I found it humorous. Keep up the good work friend!
The force is strong with this party light
I actually really like these! Shame they aren't on a smaller scale. Like say for desks or small rooms that may or may not have electricity.
that sounds like a nice 3d print project
Now I feel like I must make a little street lamp/table lamp!
Love seeing a new vid notification from Peter Brown!
Secret parties? When my neighbor had his secret parties, they were called "key parties", and at some point in the evening naked folks would end up in the front yard doing "activities" that seemed to require the complete removal of clothing. To each their own.....
Wow wow wow. No, she just likes a good surprise.
@@peterbrownwastaken I would NEVER suggest you and Mrs. Brown of such shenanigans...it really just reminded me of my old neighbor in Las Vegas
I enjoyed watching your video Peter! I just wish you did more. Love all the interactions between you and Mrs Brown in your videos lol. Love how you made the lights, even including the cross bars. Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie
These turned out so awesome!!!
Great project! Loved seeing Mrs. Brown on camera! You are one lucky dude because she is gorgeous!
Peter Brown supplying answers to questions we didn't know we had 😂
Well, now I know!
I like that you came closer to explaining the circuitry than any other RUclipsr.
I'm seeing a very fun backyard Mardi gras party in the works👀👀
So happy to see some of ur content again!
The base is held on by 4 tack welds, it's the street lamp of Damocles.
Lamp build? 👀 How exciting!!
Personally, I have a pair of high bay warehouse lights in my garage bay. Massive overkill, but never hurting for light unless I'm under a car!
Lucy and Mr Tumnus will be right over….
Well done, sir, and your IG totally fooled me. I had no idea.
That saw blade is the real deal 😮
I love Mrs. Browns sass to you.
Hmm, purple, green and gold lights... nope, I'm stumped. I hope you have "les bonnes temps" at your party, Mrs. Brown! 😉💚✌
These look awesome. Great work
these are great, I will take credit for them, you're welcome! I really thought the base was some kind of giant bubble maker :) nice job!
These are amazing! One of my favorite projects you've done. They look great, they are practical and useful. I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat!
I love that theme! Although maybe it would’ve been better to use remotes so you can change the color of the lamps.
But that sounds like a super fun party!! I mean, my original idea was gothic, but mardi-gras also works!
metal working and lights? I like it!
holy crap. ive forgotten what its like to watch Peter Brown. keep up the solid work
This is a really great way to up-cycle some old streetlamps.
cool idea. it reminds me of a project i did a couple years ago. i put a long strand of fairy lights in an antique hurricane lantern that i didnt trust to hold fuel. (it came out of the barn that my dad milked cows in when he was a kid) it made a beautiful bedside lamp
Making street lamps is fun. Helped a friend make one for his blacksmith shop.
It turned out great I've been working on another lamp piece myself taking bits of coals from a wood stove painting them with nail polish and fitting them together like a puzzle and then applying risen just to get my first base still working progress when I can't wait to finish thank you for some of the tips and tricks that may help me finish
