I get asked for behind the scenes stuff sometimes so here's a bit of that. I also put together a doc recently with more shot breakdowns and assets and tools for doing the 2d/3d thing!

I like how you use a 3D model to draw the dock in 2D, but with the depth of 3D. That’s such a good idea, I’d never have thought to try. I assume you did that with Blender.
A used this trick a whole lot back when I was taking a course on video game art. I enjoyed 3D art a great deal more then 2D, so for the concept art classes I would sorta work backwards. I'd build a scene in Unreal or Unity using simple shapes and generic item models pulled off the internet. Then I'd set up some basic lighting and trace out all the shapes and shadows.
Was it faster then just making a static 2D image? HELL no. But I suck so hard at 2D art, I found it was the easiest way to get the results I wanted.

I really love how you mesh both 2D AND 3D animation like that! That's so cool! It's like 2D is for the characters, 3D is for the backgrounds, and even some realistic elements for the props! It's like an Amazing World of Gumball episode!

I just picked Blender up the other day to mess around with it and im having trouble finding out where ti even begin or what to do with it. These break down videos are a big help in inspiring me to want to do more. When i see behind the scenes, while I can't do what you do, it's good to know that I potentially could down the line. At the very least it gives me something to attempt to imitate to practice with ideas.
