- The world is not decarbonizing fast enough to avert the most calamitous effects of climate change. Through competitions that reward bold, experimental ideas, cities can multiple their odds of finding moonshot solutions.
The Helsinki Energy Challenge inspired a new strategy for storing renewable energy in the Finnish capital: deploying giant hot water basis in the ocean and using them as thermal batteries. The resulting “Hot Heart” design could transform energy storage in coastal cities around the globe - including Dubai, where the technology could be applied to lower temperatures as the planet warms.
