- In this video, I provide an overview of the process of thematic analysis in Qualitative research, which starts with coding the data and then involves reviewing codes and creating themes. Of course this is not a comprehensive guide, so please don't expect this to replace your books and university lectures! :) Hopefully it will give you a good start.
Also, feel free to explore the whole "data analysis" playlist on my channel if you want to watch longer and more in-depth videos on this topic

I've just watched 3 of your videos on coding and thematic analysis, and they have been more succinct and clear than any of the prescribed books for my dissertation.
Thank you
Hi Laura, thank you for taking the time to share this great feedback - I am really glad that you found these videos so helpful!
I agree!
Word coding was actually "overwhelming" for me... but this piece of video helped a lot to release the clutters of misunderstanding.
Thank you Dr.
After so much reading, it took THIS VIDEO to finally sink in. Thank you for your knowledge!
Wonderful! Glad that it helped, and thank you for taking the time to share this great feedback
I watched your videos a year or two ago when I was first learning about coding. To this day, I search for you for any questions I have. Thank you for providing the BEST tips for coding. So appreciated.
Thank you! I'm really glad that you are finding my videos helpful!
You are so right in saying that it is the word 'coding' which makes the idea of it more intimidating than it needs to be. Such a helpful video, thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thank you so much Dr. Kiukow for the explanation. I now finally made sense to what I was having trouble with. Love from Malaysia!
Wonderful! glad that I could help!
Thank you so much! Just like coding you simplified everything and I can understand it clearly ❤❤❤
Happy to hear that!
Thanks so much.. All explained in 5 mins. Simple, clear and is the best explaination video tool... 👌👌👍
Thank you, I'm happy that you feel this way
Thanks a lot! Thanks to your video I finally figured out how to use thematic analysis for my dissertation! 🙏
You're very welcome!
Thank you so much for this video :)

Glad it helped!
thank you for your time to put this informative video. very helpful
You're very welcome!
Great video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Great short video. I have been looking for a program to help distil and organize my thoughts for thematic analysis in a contemporary and practical setting. I appreciate the reference to NVivo12. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you this is really helpful!
Glad to hear that!
Quick and nice explain. Thank you sir
From Sri Lanka
Thank you! And Sri Lanka is a beautiful country!
BROOO...Err, I mean...Doctor! You are a GEM! You just opened my eyes to what CODING actually means! I always thought it was a hard word that I'd never be able to grasp but after watching this video I'm like what??? So basically breaking down information into small bits and analysing them to find similarities/differences (themes)?? Like, that's it?! THANK YOU DR! Given you a big fat FOLLOW!
you nailed it :) That is exactly what coding/thematic analysis is. Much simpler than it may sound
a really good explanation. The first I understood.
Thank you! Glad it helped
wow, what a perspctive. it made sense to em really well.
Thank you!
Tqvm Dr
Your videos really help me
Glad to hear that ! :)
Excellent explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
Man at 0:51 looking for themes if pancake swap gonna go up or down😌. Your vid helped me understand what coding is to thematic analysis, thanks!
This was my goal :) Glad that it worked !
Thanks for this it’s excellent 👌🏻
Thank you!
thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊
This video is underatted
Thank you! Hopefully it will eventually gain more views!:)
thank you ...
You're most welcome!
thank u
You're welcome!
Concretely explained 👌
Thank you
When discussing themes, do we only depend on the frequency of codes? Another way can be discussing why some codes were covered by more a theme and conclude a relation? What else can I consider to make a discussion and recommendation for my findings after analysis?
I have a separate video in which I explain how to present the result of thematic analysis - this is where I address these very questions
Great Content. May I ask can I use an inductive approach for thematic coding?
Of course, the inductive approach is the most common one
Hello Dr. Let's say you have 2 objectives to analyse thematically, are you supposed to present each on a separate table? Or combine all on one table
I usually combine all findings in 1 table
Hi thanks. I wanted to know if what you discuss in the video is the same for grounded theory? What about your other videos? If we substitute theme for the word 'categories' , is everything you say of thematic analysis same for grounded theory? Do we have thematic frameworks there as well, but may be with different names?
I do have a video in which I reflect on similarities/differences, but yes these are essentially the same (although university professors, especially those who perceive themselves as grounded theorists, would never admit this), but as you said the terminology they use is different. GT is just pretty detailed in how they code, but I always use the same detailed approach for any thematic analysis anyway (as my approach has originally been influenced by GT), so no difference
@@qualitativeresearcher Wonderful. Can you pleeeaaassee link this video you talk of? Thank you, thank you!
When it comes to thematic analysis is it possible to have preconceived themes?
Yes, this would be a strongly Deductive approach. More often than not people have a combination of inductive and deductive, or strictly inductive approaches (where their findings, codes, themes, etc are developed strictly from the data), but some also (especially in some methodologies such as content analysis) adopt a pre-determined coding scheme to look only for specific themes
@@qualitativeresearcher Thank you very much for your reply. Just to follow up, is the deductive approach the only one that utilizes pre-establish themes or there are others that could make use of pre-establish themes?
Is it possible to thematically analyse free text responses from 8 open ended questions if 600 participants took part in a qualitative survey study? Can an individual researcher do it, or would you advise a team of researchers? I would think doing among a team, would take longer?
you're right, this can be done by a single person. you can also do it in a team and just distribute the work among the members, this will really depend on your preferences
@@qualitativeresearcherThank you for responding. I wanted to ask if it were to be completed by an individual coder, how long would this take? I have conducted thematic analysis before for a different purpose (e.g., thematic synthesis for a systematic review of 11 studies) and it took me three months with NVivo. This is a larger scale project, I have gotten feedback saying this is not feasible.
What app are you using to store coding data?
NVivo is the software I use
I got 3 transcripts so how do i do themes and coding ? All togehter or different. I dont underatamd anything.
one by one, I have plenty of videos on this channel where I explain this. You can watch the series entitled "from codes to themes"
Sir, can i get your permission to show this 5 minute video on coding to themes in a workshop for my final exam to conduct aworkshop in my powerpoint?
Of course! Go ahead, glad that you found it useful! :)
But what is coding though 😭 - like a big picture explanation.
Sorry if I did not make this clear - coding is basically marking a given sentence(s) with a name or a label, whether you use software or not - almost like generating a little summary of it. I do have several videos where I go in much more depth through the process (e.g. my series "from codes to themes")
@@qualitativeresearcher Thank you. That's way helpful. I'll have to do a deep dive into those vids and see if I can get my head around it. It's crazy just how much things have to be stripped back for absolute dummies (like me) when explaining things hey. I appreciate you taking the time
@@qualitativeresearcher I just downloaded acode app for my android device. It's this a logical starting point? Some context. I'm looking to better understand the process of building an app from scratch
Word coding was actually "overwhelming" for me... but this piece of video helped a lot to release the clutters of misunderstanding.
Thank you Dr.
you're welcome!
what app are you using for data analysis?
I mainly use NVivo. But there are many other programs you can use, I review many of them in my various videos
