Towel mod: attach a lanyard to the towel and tie it to the brake cable (or in your case the towel hook). That way if your drop it you can get it back without screaming for help from your kid.
I use an Ikea laptop stand for $35. Does everything I need to and doesn't block the airflow by having it infront. Towel goes over the handle bars to prevent sweat droplets. Fans are connected through kasa on a smart switch, I just turn them on as I progressively warm up.
My garage setup was a pair of barstools. One for food/drink, one for laptop. Holiday project is to redo my indoor bike with a new groupset (Ultegra mech) and my older set of speedplay pedals. Finally got another set so I don't have to keep switching them between my indoor and outdoor rides
Loving all the MacGyver hacks you've done to your desk - I've done a whole bunch of modifications too! I think we're an inventive bunch, or we like to create as much convenience as possible to avoid having to break away during a workout or race. I started with a cheap wheeled desk off Amazon (I tried the Wahoo desk but found the surface area a little small - suspect you do too since you have an additional side table!) and I've modified it with various bits including little under-desk trays for storage. I'm a creature of habit so everything has its "place" on the desk surface! The only things I'd really like to figure out how to integrate still would be some kind of wet bar (!) to chill my cold drinks or serve me a hot espresso... maybe what I actually need is a robot butler 🤣🤣
Thanks so much for this, I've got the knock-off wahoo desk and it's great but always felt cluttered and cumbersome with cables and stuff. I've just bought a surface mount USB charger and some cable ties and what a transformation, Absolutely loving it! Thermometer is on order 😉
Some great ideas. I have hacked the power extension lead in a similar fashion but to the leg of the table, Alexa speaker, wireless upright phone charger and remote control sockets for fan and trainer. However, based on this video I have plenty still to do! Happy Christmas to you and family.
Love your set-up. I'm working with the dining room table/computer desk/table (and the whole dining room) for the monitor and a really nice music stand for keyboard/mouse/phone/food. Water bottles are in the smart trainer mounted bike bottle holders and the Kickr Climb controller is on the handlebars. Hope to move to a large(r) screen TV later this year, so it'll all need a major rethink.
I've been waiting too long and too intently to see the desk setup 😁 All the little things, like power and USB, are great to see as they're the things that are likely bugbears for us all. One thing that will always be different for me - the mouse. Thanks to my Meccano collection I use a wireless trackball from Logitech that doesn't require an expanse of real estate or optical friendly surface to operate on.
I recently bought the lifeline table and i mounted a 1u server rack power brick underneat it, it power a USB charger andd the 90W power supply for my 250+ addressable RGB strip. I have a cool blue/white light shining down on the floor and leds that light up both my drink bottles. Kinda trashy but i love it!
Love your smart desk, Lama. I just use an ironing board. Its not exactly high tech but its height adjustable, has plenty of space and easily folded and stored after use.
Great video! I love the little details. We've done a bunch of minor tweaks to our pain cave to make it similarly useful but yours gives me a lot of ideas. Cheers!
Ok keyboard, I use a completely water proof keyboard, it is the only one that has lasted. It is designed to be hosed off which is perfect and lasted really well. As I sweat Lakota and lead rides with loads of typing it is really reliable and lasts.
That's a great practical setup Shane. I'm running a ghetto setup with a couple of ironing boards, I probably couldn't run one as close as you do out front given the wheel clearance though.
If it wasn’t for blocking the airflow from the fan on the floor I would have gone for the desk setup as well but cooling is more important to me… I do like the KOM desk though, heaps more real estate than my bar stool lol
Four small drill holes on each corner (2.5mm or so drill bit), then a Dremel or similar to join them up. Always cut smaller than you need then widen the hole until the gauge clips in neatly.
Great setup! Provided useful hints, particularly the water bottle cage hack. Curious why you chose the Wahoo desk (unless it was a free), as there are similar desk available for less than 1/2 the price, albeit without the Wahoo name.
As a recent subscriber to your RUclips channel I found this really helpful. I'm now in the process of making my own setup based upon your recommendations. However, I am having a nightmare running Zwift on Apple 4k TV through 21" PC monitor using HDMI to VGA on the monitor. I will 'upgrade' to a TV at some point, but. trying to get the Apple Remote to do almost anything mid-ride (type messages for example) is totally hit-and-miss with the emphasis upon the 'miss'. I am deeply into the Apple-tech-system and their TV remote is by far their worst product. What do you use and why do you have the keyboard and mouse when I can see the Apple TV box in your setup? Many thanks.
Got some good deals on smart trainers here in Canada right now and looking to upgrade my smart trainer from a TacX wheel-on to a direct drive trainer. I've been looking at the Kickr Core and Saris H3 as with the current deals they're about the same price (around $1100 CAD). There's also the Flux 2 and Elite XR in that range. Currently leaning towards the Kickr, but the extra good deal on the H3 is tempting. Any advice?
Can you make a video on setting the TV height on the wall as well as the distance from you. I am thinking about mounting my TV to the wall in front of me but I am not sure how high to put it and how far from me.
Happy holiday Shane and thanks for the video. How does using a desk like that effect the wahoo headwind and/or view of the screen? I'd like a surface in front but feel it would likely block air from the headwind higher up on the body when training/racing. Currently I use an ironing board along side me, great height and loads of space LOL Cheers
I'm new to this stuff, but doesn't a towel mean that you don't have enough fans? I've heard that an accurate simulation to road wind would be something like 14,000 CFM, but I've never seen you guys have anything close to that
@@gplama hmm there must be a point at which the air pressure is so high that no drops would succeed in forming. Maybe 1,400,000 cfm and tie down straps to ensure that one isn't launched off of their bikes to their death. but yeah I guess it's not realistic, considering that even true outdoor air pressure is inadequate to micronize all of the sweat moisture into the atmospheric gas
I wish I could find a similar desk that was foldable for storage whenever not in use. I'm very short on space in my one bedroom unit. I need something that I can EASILY breakdown and put away. How stable is KOM cycling desk as the main desk?
Hey Shane, do yo have an access point setup in the room? I recently added one for the Companion app but it feels like I'm getting ANT+ dropouts because of it.
We had a lot of problems with a wifi repeater and since then removed it completely. Have you tried a BT/BLE connection? In our setup these proved to be more reliable.
Yep, Google Nest Wifi AP in the room. I'm using 5Ghz for everything where I can which takes the stress of the 2.4 band. Just make sure your 2.4 wifi isn't on Ch10 stick it on Ch1 if you can.

put it on a retractable lanyard also
@@reflectionsdetail which one did you buy? Can you post a link
If we are being honest with ourselves this is all the features a $250 cycling desk should come with.
Great mods!
True. But, there is no greater satisfaction than coming up with your customized setup. Cheers.
If you add smart plugs to your fans you can use your smart speaker to turn them on once the temp gets high.

YEEESSSSSSS, the humble cable tie is the star performer here. Great vid mate, thanks.
This practical neat tidy high tech cycling set up is my wet dream! Well done

Great to see the smart desk. Very cool setup you have. Hope you and the family had a great Christmas
🌲 Merry Christmas Shane. Cool desk 🌲
I keep a back scratcher in one of the slots I use it almost every session.
Long way from staring at the wall while on the rollers
Top desk hacks Shane.👍

I use touch portal when controlling my zwift streams. Virtually unlimited buttons for paid version. Very handy if you have a spare phone lying around.
This app looks quite interesting! Do you use this app for any in-game button functionality or just for your streams?
Happy Christmas 🎄!
I use the aliexpress silicon covers for the AppleTV remote, stops them being slippery!
@GP Lama any tips for cutting the desk to insert the temp gauge? Thanks for the awesome video as always

Mine has also remote temperature and fan speed regulation ;-)
Great setup Shane. Damn that Wahoo Kickr Desk is expensive.
Check out wiggles copy of the desk, lifeline trainer table. it’s cheaper. I have one and love it.
I have a Lifeline Trainer table, it has bottle holders. Your watts make me feel like a sloth. lol

PC tucked away on the floor to the right of the desk.
Can you do a video of your steaming set up and that device?
I had a similar setup but changed is because it was blocking the airflow to my body too much
is it time fore a better version of the wahoodesk? Is there a desk 2.0 coming in 2023?
An update would be nice.

It gets in the way of air hitting your face/head if you place the bike close to the desk. I use a few fans because of this.
Excellent coverage, and just in time for me (recent SB20 purchase). You only casually mentioned your PC. Where was that?
PC is on the floor to the right of the desk.

Moving that kind of air indoors is difficult. You'll always need a towel.

Ahoy, from St Thomas USVI. When will you get around to friending GPSheepy friends on zwift, want to set up some solo meetups.
Cheers.
Great video. Thanks. Curious about what you use the keyboard and mouse for. Are you running Zwift on the AppleTV or computer?
Windows 11 PC.
Ikea makes a wireless charger that mounts under your desk, so you can just put your phone on top of your desk and it charges like magic.
Man. Look at the graphics he gets on zwift. Wonder what that setup is.
Windows 11 PC. Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU.
@gplama Is the black pad surface a part of the KICKR desk or something you added? Looks like it's different under the mouse area as well.
I added that. It’s a carbon fibre lookalike contact/sticky stuff.
Hack or Bodge?
Lama, you need to get a 3D printer to customize even more!
How did you mount the thermometer to the desk? Looks like a sleek setup
Four small holes drilled as a rectangle then drilling out the plastic with a Dremel tool. The sensor then just snaps in.
@@gplama thx Shane. I did it today and it worked like a charm.
Thanks for your Trainer Desk Tips. Where is your computer located?
Bottom right of the desk on the floor.
Nice piece for us nerds. Is there a less expensive desk that will work, as in slide in and out?
Yep. There's a few knockoffs on Amazon. amzn.to/33Z95E0

KOM desk isn't too bad. You can adjust the legs to spread out to give it more stability.

I added a small piece of wood to the left leg/arm and screwed both bottle cages onto that as a bracket.

Dont you use AC in your paincave?
The house has a central heating/cooling system. Ideally the Lama Lab should have its own split system.
What microphone are you using?
This is a Samson Go Mic. The key to making it sound this good indoors with the trainer and fans going is Nvidia Broadcast noise reduction software.
Merry Christmas Shane
