This! It'd be really interesting to compare a Westcott Bi-Color Flexlight (which for a 1x2 is north of $1200), and a dirt cheap version from Amazon or B&H that's less than $200.
I found that a telescoping painters pole works great. They give you the reach that the broom pole doesn't. I think I only spent $20 on one awhile back. Thinking about it, broom poles and painters poles are hollow on the inside so a possible DIY built in XLR is probably possible, like the K-Tek.
Personally I use a cheap monopod for a boom pole. It collapses much smaller than the broom handle, weighs about the same, and already has a 1/4" 20 screw at the end so no drilling/tape is required. Plus it looks just enough like an actual boompole that you could pass as a professional crew to the untrained eye. You can get them for about $14-20 on Amazon.
I wonder why all the pro sound mixers and boom operators on larger budget sets choose the expensive poles? Reach is definitely one of the reasons, but like others have said, you can use a painter's pole for the same effect. I can say that I don't usually have to worry about tapping the pole just under the mic like in your test. Rubbing hands on the pole is a more likely situation where sound will be picked up by the mic. Also, most pro mixers and boom operators have to attach more substantial wind protection (blimp covers) which would be more difficult with a broom pole. But for indie film, broom poles took the win today! Thanks Griffin!
If you are a professional sound mixer, the equipment will pay for itself. You also can charge a kit rental fee to the production. Also, like said in the video, one probably won't get hired back if you come to a commercial set with a broom/painter handle. Agencies reps, clients, producers, etc probably don't want to see their sound person holding a broom pole at the talent.

The reason you are hearing more noise when you tap the Ktek boompole as opposed to the broom pole, is because the KTek has the coiled cable inside the pole, which is rattling and banging against the inside, whereas the broom pole is solid and has nothing to bang. Sound is vibration, tapping, banging, or slapping creates vibrations, and those vibrations will travel around a cavity.
I just watched this video.. I remembered back when I was doing windows I have a 20ft extendable boom pole. Just put my Deity D4 on it and it works EXTREMELY well even for aluminum. No harsh after tones and it already had styro handles on it so that helps with the moving. It's perfect! I personally don't think people other than the actual camera community really cares about what you brought to set to get the job done. Broom poles don't factor you as a professional. It means you now have the utensil to get the job done for which the RESULTS will always win over anything. We bought a cheap bag of Velcro strips to aid in securing the XLR cable and prevent resultant cord noise. For us, these strips were a must have for any non-internal, wired pole whether a broom pole or an inexpensive R0de micro pole.
I made a professional looking boom pole for about $25. I used a telescopic paint roller pole. I heated s standard mic stand head till it was pliable and I was able to butterfly it open. I formed the mic stand head to a short cut of 2" pvc,drilled holes and screwed them together. Then I cut slits in the ends of the pvc for rubber bands, painted the pvc and the screw head of the pole black, and forcefully screwed my pvc shock mount on to the pole screw head(the plastic was soft enough to form to the wrong size metal nut inside the mic stand head). Next thing to try is run the xlr through it!
What I would do is 3D print an adapter so that you can mount the shock mount to the end of the pole rather than have it sit out to the side, that way it doesn't look so DIY. But what I've used previously was an extendible paint roller handle, they're fairly cheap, and still extend quite the way
For the broom pole, or even better an extendable painters pole (not much more in price) take a look for an old paint roller; remove the "L-shaped" metal rod and thread a screw in through the bottom of the handle up & out the hole, securing with a washer & nut. Now you have a proper mount for your shock mount mic holder and it can travel in your suitcase as part of your gear even when your cheap broom/painters pole doesn't go with you, allowing you to get one from any hardware store as you mentioned, and still keep the full functionality of the shock mount attachment ;)
I used an extendable paint roller pole I picked up for just £3.99 here in the UK, it's 3.5ft and extends to 6.5ft. I think it's great that you've shown that cheap doesn't always mean bad this time. Loving the new content, keep it up guys.

Brilliant - I use an extendable plastic mop pole with the same results only it collapses down to half the size to about 3 1/2 feet so fits in my light stand bag really easily.
what we used was a telescoping Paint Roller Extension Pole with an non coiled XLR dropped through a hole in both ends we would collapse or extend it IMMEDIATELY upon getting it out so, the majority of the time it was visible ,it just looked "normal"

When I bought a 23 foot telescoping pole, I also bought a $5 mini paint roller that screwed onto it. I cut handle and found a hole which fit a 1/4-20 x 1 inch setscrew.
I used a heavy duty aluminum monopole that collapsed down nicely. It extended nearly 5.5 feet and had a shock absorber 1/4-20 mic mount that worked great.

I'm using a very cheap Koolertron boom pole which has as cable pass through. Now I do have to use a thinner XLR cable, but for the cost, it's worth it.
There are crazy affordable chinese boom poles (sub $100, which are more than good enough to just "get the job done") that I think it insanity to try and save a few pennies by using a broom pole / painters pole instead.

It's hard to take a test like this seriously when the tester has issues with a simple screw-lock, or considers headphones being something just for checking handling noise. But for someone very inexperienced, maybe those could be issues somehow, there's one thing that makes this test very unreliable even for a DIY-test: Always use the exact same microphone in the exact same shockmount when doing comparisons like this. Using two completely different mics WILL lead to very unreliable results. Myself, I changed from a wooden broom-handle with a screw fixed at the end through a drilled hole at the top and some chemical steel to seal the deal. Most certainly worked very well, and I still have it around, but I seriously did not miss the lack of telescopic settings nor poor grip when changing to Klassic K102 CCR. What makes the K-Tek booms so good compared to other professional booms are several things, most of which are hard to explain as they are more of a "feeling" thing like sturdiness and such, but mainly the super-reliable locking-rings. I've had mine for well over 10 years, and in service, it feels like I just bought it! K-Tek is incredibly reliable, and on set, reliability is king. (Not sponsored, just a fan) Other than those things, I do appreciate these videos, not least since DIY is most certainly a much better, or even great way, to start than waiting for expensive gear that might never even turn up the first place. In further videos, please mind consistency, because you do bring up a valid point: Can these things be used agony-free until you can afford the good stuff? Or for people with less professional intentions full stop?
How about a painter’s pole? Same as the broom pole but extends. I have one that goes from something like eight to 16 feet (extends only once) so like your broom stick definitely not portable, BUT cheap enough to buy one anywhere. I use it primarily to get the camera really high up in the air. It’s awesome!

I started out with just a zoom h 1 and rode video micro audio, no one complained about the audio as sounded decent. I upgraded to a rode video mic pro +. A major bump in quality.

I completely understand that and agree. But there’s still the element of looking professional. I’m all down for and have used a broom pole. But if I was gonna invest a buck, I’d buy a boom pole, but not an expensive one like that.
I have a boom pole for ten years that does everything his did but isn’t carbon fiber and it cost me $130. Nothing beats having the cable inside it. And the broom handle isn’t long enough if you want to do a medium shot.

I'm looking at telescopic carbon fibre poles in the UK and Gardiner make a range of poles for window cleaners starting at around £79 which might work nicely ?
Have you tried a collapsible fishing rod? I haven't tried it myself, but I would think that it would pack well; just remove the last section (which would be too skinny for use).
That integrated mic cable is a gigantic pain and will more than likely get frayed/break after a few months of using it... so, you'll be using an external XLR cable anyway.
I really feel like boom poles are the biggest racket in the film industry. Like... I can wrap my own XLR cable around a painter's pole. Worst case, I need a couple zip ties to secure it.

Using a combo of velcro strips (for the lower tiers) and bongo ties (for the upper sections) is my preferred way of setting up my boom pole :-)
I use a $2 monopod normally used for selfies. I simply unscrew the phone holder and it gives me a standard 1/4 inch screw mount.

Cheap CCTV lenses for MFT and DSLRs. Bought a 25$ 25mm lens and works quite nice with my Yi M1 MFT camera.
I am currently using a 15$ monopod as a boom pole. It's really handy, because of the grip plus the amount of extension you can get.

I have a boom pole for ten years that does everything his did but isn’t carbon fiber and it cost me $130. Nothing beats having the cable inside it. And the broom handle isn’t long enough if you want to do a medium shot.
@@DogFiles is kinda a matter of personal preference when it comes to internal vs external cabling, there is pros and cons to each approach
@@DogFiles people have mentioned aluminium extendable pool cleaners can have the wires run down inside them, seems like a little modding and you've beaten the $600 counterpart.

Have you tried a collapsible fishing rod? I haven't tried it myself, but I would think that it would pack well; just remove the last section (which would be too skinny for use).

That integrated mic cable is a gigantic pain and will more than likely get frayed/break after a few months of using it... so, you'll be using an external XLR cable anyway.

I really feel like boom poles are the biggest racket in the film industry. Like... I can wrap my own XLR cable around a painter's pole. Worst case, I need a couple zip ties to secure it.
