  • The OEX Phoxx + ultralight has been on the shelves for a couple of months now, and to be fair I hadn't really checked it out. Recently I've been trying to reduce my pack size and weight for summer camping and multi day hikes. Having realised that trekking pole tents and I don't get on it was time to look for a new lightweight tent to add to my lightweight setup. Initially I was looking at the Nordisk Telemark 1 LW and the Nordisk Lofuten, and out of these two the Lofuten was just in first place.....until I looked at the OEX Phoxx 1 + ultralight. It's very very similar to the Lofuten in both appearance, shape and statistics, although the Phoxx 1 ul is a full 25 cm taller and 10 cm longer, which for a tall chap like myself is invaluable. With these kind of tents you definitely need to pick your battles, only really fit for summer camps and multi day camps where you are not sat tentbound for hours, they pack small and are super lightweight. With everything taken into account I opted for the Phoxx 1 ul, the nail in the coffin for the Nordisk was the price tag of £600 compared to the Phoxx 1 + ultralights price of £169. I think this truly is a premium tent on a (reasonable) budget price. I hope you all enjoy the review, and find it useful, especially if you are considering buying the OEX Phoxx + ultralight.

    I disagree a bit on the seam sealing - a lot of silnylon tents might not actually 'need' it depending on the stitching quality and the conditions. I have two silnylon Wechsels and haven't needed to seam seal either - both stand up to multiple nights of West Wales heavy rain without issue. If they were seam sealed in the factory they'd be slightly heavier and more expensive, so it suits me that they're not. Thanks for the review!

      Yeah it does say may need sealed, I just prefer to err on the side of caution rather than getting caught out in bad conditions, which I'm often in. I guess it does give people options doing it this way, atb Paul 🙏🏕🏕🏕😁

    Yeah, new bike day! 😂

      @@ACumbrianladoutdoors I wanna see how this performs with some moderate wind and rain! This is something that would suit my bike packing needs in the wilds of Wales, not sure it's man enough though? I'm currently using either the Phoxx 1 and 2. The Phoxx 1 is too small if I'm honest, and the Phoxx 2 is quite bulky and heavy on my bars. But these tents are bombproof!
      I wanna see them make a Phoxx 2 UL in green! 😍

      @ACumbrianladoutdoors  Месяц назад +2

      @mokotramp if you check out my fellbarrow, and Nethermost pike vids buth had some decent winds, and I've had it in rain no problem. Agreed on the green, it'd be much better, it's the same height as the phoxx 2, if they made it double entry and a porch either side it would be a very good tent indeed 😀 atb Paul 🙏 🏕 🏕🏕😁

      @@ACumbrianladoutdoors Hi Paul, I ordered one last night. The weight and pack size is most attractive for me as a bikepacker, I'm still blown away by it's weight! I've got a nice little 2.1x3.0 green SilNy Flames Creed tarp I can throw over it for extra space and to 'stealth' it up a little.
      I was looking at the TN Laser compact 2 AS last night, but at 600 quid for a tent that uses cheap bungee to connect the bottom of the inner to the outer, quite frankly is laughable!
      I've not had any problems with my 2 Phoxx tents, I can't see the UL version being any different? 👍

    • @ACumbrianladoutdoors
      @ACumbrianladoutdoors  Месяц назад +2

      @mokotramp it serves a very specific purpose, you will love it, and the tarp will complement it perfectly 👌 atb Paul 🙏 🏕 🏕🏕😁

    Thanks, very detailed review. Just a comment on a lightweight/inexpensive mod. If you put a ring buckle on the central inner tie point, you could then loop the tensioning cord through it. This would then allow you to 'slide' the inner groundsheet 'backwards and forwards' along the tensioning cord when not pegged down and give space for cooking inside. This would literally add a few grams but allow cooking/brewing when its raining outside.
    p.s Thanks for making the comment at the beginning about seam sealing. I agree its a far too common practise/excuse by the manufacturers to 'penny pinch' on their duty to provider a suitable product...do waterproof jackets require seam sealing and/or would you be expected to put a top coat on a car to protect the paint?

      @ACumbrianladoutdoors  3 месяца назад +1

      Cheers buddy, glad you liked it 😁 that's a good little mod suggestion, would make it something like my scarp 1 👍 Yeah I feel like there's no real excuse for them bot coming seam sealed, even if they did them in store for you it would be more manageable 💪 thanks for watching and commenting, it's really appreciated, atb Paul 🙏 🏕 🏕🏕😁

    They can’t seam seal the tents in the factory. They don’t sew in tape to waterproof the seams, to save weight and cost.
    Chemical sealing post production would require setting up each tent and sealing them by hand. Image that on a 10,000 production run. This would mean each tent would cost more than twice as much and have lower stocks. Hence why you’re paying £170 not £250-£1000.

    • @ACumbrianladoutdoors
      @ACumbrianladoutdoors  4 месяца назад +2

      Hi Nick, thanks for watching and commenting, it's really appreciated 🙏 you are ever so slightly incorrect though, the usual seam sealing strips don't stick to sylnylon therefore they can't use them, it's not to save weight. When I bought my Scarp 1 from tarptent they sealed it for me, granted at a cost of £25 OEX definitely could offer this service for a reasonable price, it could be done in store where there is plenty of room to do it, so they would only be maybe doing 40 or 50 tents per store across the country 👍 atb Paul 🙏 🏕🏕🏕😁

    Great review but that tent is way to small. I have the original version which I bought when I first started. You can't get changed in it and you can't cook in it. So pointless for me.

      Cheers buddy 👍 this tent is much bigger than the original Phoxx 1, it os a tight squeeze, and I wouldn't want anything smaller tbh I have had it out in a camp, and I can get changed in it, and also cook in the porch, the video will be out this Sunday coming 😀 atb Paul 🙏 🏕 🏕🏕😁

      It sure is buddy, definitely a tight squeeze, and only for summer camping and multi day hikes 👍 seam sealing isn't difficult, and doesn't take too long, I think manufacturer's should at the very least offer a seam sealing service 👍 thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it 🙏 atb Paul 🙏 🏕 🏕🏕😁

      I can just feel in my water the comments if they were all came sealed, and the price was increased accordingly: some'd go bonkers.
