- Today we are down in Wildewood, Maryland trying to rescue this forgotten airplane that has been sitting for 14 years! After picking it up for $20,000 we're hoping we'll be able to make a decent profit if we are able to stay in our budget to get it fixed up and flying again. We'll be diving right in and going over everything on this airplane to see if we got a great deal or have another huge money pit to deal with!

You can tell someone cared for that aircraft. Im glad your going to continue that care and get her in the air.
Exactly the opposite of the Cirrus he bought..
Absolutely! That looks really good for sitting that long.
That "Piper Aire" window decal means that plane originally had AC. Over the years folks have to choose to keep fixing leaks and issues or they delete it and get the useful load back. You may have a deleted AC bird.
That's exactly what I thought when I saw the deal. Pain in the butt to work on if you need to. Looks like it was a clean de-mod to fresh air (aire?)
wow what a fortunate find, a plane in this kinda wonderful condition. thank your lucky stars
I wanna see more on the Cirrus!
@@sebastianbenner977 same
And the 401.
@@imigistx yeh
I think they should just take the engine out of it and junk it, the airframe looks too moist, rotten and sunbaked to work.
But I might be mistaken.
We at XeVision offered to "help" with the Landing light system damaged on that Cirrus, we made that HID original system.
Nice rescue!
Thank you Brother!👍🏻
A line from the vintage TV series Then Came Bronson intro- " Man, I wish I was you." Very fitting here. Congrats on the purchase and thanks for taking us along.
Y’all need to check out an old Baron out at KFNL in Colorado N9BS. Has been sitting abandoned for at least 10 maybe 15 years. I think the owner died and it’s been sitting on our ramp ever since.
Woow what great find. $20,000 what a great bird. Give it some 430 and it might be a great IFR trainer. Please do show us what you make of it.
Hey, cowl intake plugs ! A good thing. And great to have the canopy to shade you.
Awesome find on that airplane. Another amazing Saturday morning. Thank you for all you do, guys. Weekends wouldn't be the same without you
Thank you for being apart of the Rescue Crew, your support means a lot to us👍🏻
I had guessed maybe a 5 percent chance that the battery had any juice at all, but when I saw the way the cylinders looked, I was figuring a good 95% chance of the engine starting. The initial turn-over was really disappointing, until you remembered you had turned the external power-pack off and corrected that mistake.
That plane was stored PROPERLY!. I hope that it gives a very nice return on your invested money and labor, and has minimal ADs and other issues that need to be dealt with to bring it to compliance with modern standards.
More like use in place of 0whiskey which they sold
Guys, you really need to read the book by Mike Bush specific to resurrecting engines that haven't been run in a long time. Basically you need to get lots of misted oil on the camshaft because that's a lot more critical than your cylinders but misting all internal components would be a good thing and you do that by using a hardware store-bought bug spray dispenser.
You're assuming someone didn't prep and run the engine a few days ago before they sat it outside for this video.
@@T_Mo271 Well that would be very dishonest of them if they actually ran the engine prior to them recording preparations and actual running of the engine. I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt that the engine was not run prior to actual video content.
Except there is no way to access the cam on the O-320/360 without removing a cylinder.
Access through the dipstick will only get access to the sump and above that, there are very narrow slots in the bottom of the case where oil can drain into the sump.
If this airplane was indeeed parked for 15 years and the engine was not “pickled”, then the cam lobes and lifter faces are most likely severely corroded.
The engine will run just fine like this, but will slowly lose power over 2 years /200 hrs or so as the cam profile is slowly worn away by the pitted follower.
@@Stepclimb Well my friend, then remove a cylinder That's no big deal It's done every day probably a hundred times a day.
Now the cylinder walls didn't look corroded at all so there's a good chance that the cam is not corroded either but certainly needs to have lots of lubrication after sitting idle for so long. And if you do remove a cylinder then you could use the borescope to inspect the cam.
Once again these guys are rushing to get an aircraft back in the air when they need to slow down just a bit. Juan Brown and many others, including myself have made it very clear to these guys that they need to slow down and do things right or sure as God has made little green apples, there's going to be another accident
@@christophergagliano2051
I get the impression that you have never removed a cylinder from a Lycoming O-320.
It is no small feat to remove all the baffles just to get to the point of removal.
Also, as Mike Busch has pointed out, cylinder removal should be avoided if at all possible due to the inherent risks of the difficulty of achieving base stud and through-stud preload with the engine in-situ.
It is completely ridiculous to propose to remove a cylinder to lubricate the cam.
It is MAYBE called for if one suspects cam corrosion based on oil filter inspection results.
Certainly, if one were evaluating an airplane for purchase, it would be highly unlikely that a seller would allow for the removal of a cylinder to allow for cam inspection.
Either way, Cam corrosion is NOT an immediate airworthiness issue because cam wear happens slowly over time.
Additionally, removing a cylinder will only allow you to view 3 of the 6 lobes due to the case webbing around the center bearing journal. A borescope won’t help you here.
The process they are using is sound.
Spinning the engine with plugs out will splash some oil up on the lifter-cam interface sufficient to ensure they avoid a complete dry-start.
They are smart to leave the cylinders alone. If they had concerns about the cam, they could get a ferry permit, fly the airplane several hours to a maintenance facility and then cut open the oil filter for inspection.
Cam wear presents itself as magnetic “whiskers” in the filter pleats.
This is a much better way to determine cam health while avoiding the risk of cylinder removal.
A&P here, for future reference all the key does is un-grounds the magnetos so they fire. So if the key doesn’t work just pull the wires off the back of it and go. Don’t ask me how I know lol.
Anyways love your videos man I enjoy all of your projects from boats to planes!
@@benjaminsunderland2336
In the case of this Warrior, the key also provides for energizing the starter relay when in the “Start” position. Kind of hard to start it from the cockpit without the key.
Looks like he got the pins and cylinder of the keyswitch freed up with the kroil.
With a functioning ignition switch, he had the redundancy of shutting the engine down if something went wrong with the mixture cable.
Otherwise he would have had to remove the p leads and manually ground the (non hot) lead on the starter relay coil to start.
That does not sound like much fun.
That was me! I grew up on the scent of Kroil!! He's gone now, Dad always filched cans of Kroil from Georgia Pacific in Bellingham, WA. GP is also gone from Bellingham. Dad was an Instrument Repair/Maintenance Technician there.
Looks like you need new tires, Jason. Kroil works its magic again!
Unfortunately, Kroil is not approved on Certified Aircraft. You should be using LPS2.
This one would have even made Sam smile! Nice job, gents.
and …. click. Lycoming sitting equals cam lobes dry. My cam went bad and the core is still sitting in my hangar. Only way I knew was it didn’t make full RPM on run up. Oil analysis didn’t catch it. When I took my old engine to Lycon and they pulled cylinders, the piston skirts looked galvanized from all the cam shavings. The aluminum skirts absorbed the cam shavings. I use Aeroshell 100 plus but the damage was done by the airplane sitting in South Texas before I bought it and then not flying enough to keep the cam lubed. I would be very watchful for cam wear. Nice chatting with you and Joe at Osh and thank you for being so gracious with your time. Fly safe.
very few birds out there that had this kind of care and attention. cowl plugs and canopy covers will get you a long way . but flying it on a regular basis would be so much better, too. nice find. nice recovery. keep up the good work.
Absolutely beautiful bro. Great deal. Btw, always fasten your seat belt when starting up incase of accidental take off.
What kind of sorcery is this? No bird nests? Must be divine intervention!
I LOVE that it has an ADF
I know of an airplane that's been sitting for years at the Local airport down here in Monahans Texas. Crop duster that hasn't moved in years, other than an occasional push about and re tie it down, it has been in the same spot. Not sure if it's one you would even look at. Have a great time and I enjoy watching your videos. I wish I could have gotten my license before.
Rebuild rescue, the channel that keeps on buying and never finishing. When will you ever finish the 401?
I wish I could just see the 401 finished before I die! I've invested so many view-hours in it. Perhaps just focus on one or two interesting planes for the RUclips videos at a time? Or three? Just a suggestion.
It's back ordered parts problem. It's very hard to find parts for it.
@jamesallen712....Hi, Karen !
Fist of all thank you Jason for posting the planes progress in the 401, i have been interested in how things work as i look up in the sly and see air craft flying above me and thinking what would it take to fly these things, so buy looking at this Rebuild Rescue, Man i have learned a Lot!!!! OMG it's just Fabulous. I also love the accent of Americans too. So thanks to Sam Ganow for letting you work on the plane that is Free, well in a sense it's not so quite free as if you want this to fly again and to unlike a car, OMG it is expensive so a lot off $$$$$$$ to be made in getting the parts and of course time to work on the plane as to look at other small planes to not just buy but to fix them and sell them for to fund in 401. I understand it's a Cessener Phoenix 401. i have a small air port that is close to me as that is in Tyabb Morning peninsula Melbourne Australia. I am a land lubber (so wingless) as i have watched your videos and learned a lot, also thanks to Kay, wow what a looker!!! love to learn to fly with Kay!! LOL the Queen of checking everything. So thank you Jason and Joe that works for you, Joe you will like Tyabb airport as there's some war planes there with Merlin engines V12's😁😅
Glad to see you put a air plane video back on...
More to come!
@@rebuildrescue Hey, you can't go wrong with me because I love boats almost as much as airplanes!

I spray Kroil in the air even if I'm not working on anything rusty. It just sets the mood

by far the best rebuild rescue is joe. you couldn't sell that guy for a million bucks now 🤩
Nice save 😅
What about the 40 hmm… 409?? Hmm can’t remember. Just teasing but still waiting for the first plane. She needs to get in the air!
Learned to fly, did my first solo and trained 100's of students in these way way way back in the day. Nice to see one being bought back so it can continue on, good work.
Cue the wah wah wah where are the 401 update comments…
NICE!!! A bargain at three time the price. I can't wait to see her fly again.
Thank you for watching !
wOW!!! LOOKING AT HER...I feel all tingly ...I loved fling Warriors sort of like a poor mans WW2 fighter. ITHINK YOU GOT A WINNER!! GREAT VIDEO!!
Taper wing Warrior !
Needs a turbo LS in it but with a strong o-320 this Piper will fly for years just the way she is !
@@rebuildrescue yep...
🐦 ❤️
Great find! Great Buy! Great job getting it fired up! This one should be a good sell and make some $ for the 401!
You guys were overdue having this kind of luck! Looks like you got a good deal and I can't wait to see it fly again. Battery, tire and an annual is about all it needs except for the cosmetics.
Will it start? Probably. Will the engine start making a bunch of metal in the next 25 hours from corrosion on the cam and in the cylinders? Yes. Expect a complete overhaul. Still a pretty nice plane, though!!! It's well worth putting avionics and a new engine into it for what you got it for! I made the comment before watching the borescope part. You guys lucked out!!!! Hopefully the cam isn't corroded, and you would be good to go!!!!!
Absolutely beautiful brother. Congrats on what should be a huge win.
Excellent find Jason. This will make money for the organization certainly. $$$$$$
Jason a suggestion , go to a Ritchie Bros Auction and get yourself a truck with tool boxes , so you have what you need when you go to try and start a plane or boat ?
I trained and got my licence in a Warrior II at St. Catharines Ontario (CYSN), and flew them almost exclusively. I miss it more than anything now!
May the force be with you.
I want to see something on that gorgeous cx500 custom in your hanger.😊
Yes, I definitely noticed the CX too! A lovely smooth sounding engine I seem to remember when my brother inlaw had one in the early 90s.
Kudos to the previous owner, too. Plane was put to bed sensibly.
I cannot wait for the 401 to get fixed
Shortest rebuild rescue video ever! Lol no drama
Hard to kill a warrior, they're excellent airplanes. Our 76 model flys great and soaks up the landing bumps well.
Well done guys, I'd call that a WIN! Fit new Radios, Tyres, Battery and some "spit 'n' polish" on the outside and she's good to go... Greetings from Perth, West Australia. Cheers, Frank.
That was quite a steal at that price, and the condition it's in. Someone surely looked after it very well ❤
Awesome find! Took my first flight in one of those and they’re still one of my favorites! Can’t wait to see it back in the air!
That's awesome! We can't wait to see her fly
What a great find! Throw a 530w in there and you got a GREAT all around trainer.
Kroil for the win. I learned about Kroil when I was in the Navy in another life, in another century. I've had it in my shop ever since.
I love the warrior, after jumping from the Tomahawk the warrior felt like a limo with like zero vices in comparison, I couldn't even get a real stall out of it. The flying school at the time used the warriors for their cross country training.
Better say a few prayers for that cam and lifters.... There going to need it for sitting that long.
The dealer lays the cards and you pick up your hand only finding out when you turn the cards over. well the dealer smiled on you for this one nicely done crack on
I'm grinning ear to ear when that battery actually had some life in it! Bigger grin when it fired up!!
Was hoping you'd taxi it, you didn't disappoint!!!
@@dans_Learning_Curve I was so surprised it had any juice in it at all !
Glad you joined us for this rescue 👍🏼
@@rebuildrescue did it eventually take a charge?
Joes Teeth look great! Nice smile.
I owned a 79 Warrior, so also a -161, and they are just great planes. Not sure how many started out with AC installed, but I’ve never seen one with AC still in the plane, I suspect the climb/weight penalty was just too severe.
I bought an extra 12v battery for a Prius in 2012. Never put it in that Prius, my cars 12v died a couple months ago and I grabbed that battery from the garage. And the car started right up!!! So it sat for over 12 years, never charged
Good call FINALLY getting a tent fly for over the engine guys!
WOW! That just maybe just short of a real-life miracle!
By the checklist you should have the fuel pump on for engine start, then turn off after the engine has started
I started my flight training in a PA28-161 in 1977. It’s a great airplane!
Nice meeting you guys @ Osh! Really enjoy your channel!
Good to meet you !
I’ve been wanting to get my pilot license since I was in my 20s now that I’m 56 I think it’s to late for me so you all are my heroes for doing all of this and I have been watching since the 409 I even started looking to buy 1 but great job guys
Get your PPL, enjoy your leisure flying.
Dreams do come true
You guys are on a roll, boats and planes..yeah. Thanks
My first flight was in something older than that. But the Cherokee 180 was always good to me, I skipped the Warrior and went to the Turbo Arrow. Sort of anxious to watch this one.
Great to see how easily you got this plane fired up and looking good. I'm right now trying to do the same on an Evector Sportstar that has been sitting in Queensland for about the same amount of time. Like yours my bore still has the hone cross hatching and it has good oil pressure. After washing off the moss and lichen it's looking good. Now I just need to find who has the keys and logbook.
I am fond of those warriors. I have almost 50 hours in warriors and a couple in an Archer with my ppl checkride in a couple weeks in a Warrior. They’re great trainers and putter around planes. It’s great to see this plane saved!
I have a few hours in one and would gladly have traded my 172 straight across for one :)
Straight out of 1960. Can we say that if your plane isn't hangared you are preparing to give it away? really makes a huge difference
Glad to see your canopy!
Big Howdy from Sydney Australia.
That piper is a "diamond in the rough" for sure.
Would have been nice to see a cylinder compression test.
Should be a good plane.
🌏🛩️
Great find, and a great deal for sure. That can be a nice little plane with some TLC.
good to see you catch a break for once...
Agreed!!
Jason, looks like this one will make up for the Cirrus. Sweet deal for sure! Can't wait to see that one fly.
I dunno man, that Cirrus was more than a basket case. The avionics alone would eat the profit from this plane.
That said, he sold the 140 and this plane would be far better for bouncing around to other airports.
Joe’s really becoming the Co-host! Nice!!! 😁
Congrats guys! You needed a win. FWIW, I like all the content. Boats, Planes, all of it. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Brother, we appreciate that !
You should look Piper Dakota to your collection. Thanks for the video and greetings from Finland :)
maybe less than 20-30K repair good condition and shipping to Finland many want buy this less than 50K cost.
You found a Unicorn - congratulations!! I just found/bought a 2021 Lexus RC350 F Sport with 4,722 original miles. Another Unicorn, after the way this month has been going I now feel like I've got a Golden Horseshoe up my arse, just like DJT!! 😀
Metallic. AC/DC awesome
check plugs need go go juice, earl if it starts i’d do some maintenance first fuel lines first. new battery fresh fill up run it till it warms up. It has to start run then get it into annual new tires oil change new plugs replace hard ware put led’s paint mags. Out of the gate dry this long fuel pump might not work.
less than 30K budget this plane fly again good and can sell good profit.
I got to say, the paint fading gave the red stripe a nice gradient to orange 🤣
Red is the color most quickly degraded by UV it seems...
Definitely stood the test of time better than the Cirrus. Not as sexy, but dang there is something to be said for steam gauges.
The reg used in one of the cinematics G-BRDG, is the aircraft I passed my skills test in over here in the UK recently, she’s still going strong. What a small world 😂

You guys are Great!! Just wondering if and when we will see some bots afloat, and sold, and some planes flying and sold, to keep this going!!! More progress and less corrosion!!!
Well it doesn’t have zip ties on the rudder peddles….. that’s a good sign 😂😂
