Don't waste your time. You can fix that by going to utility then open terminal and type ( drutil tray eject ). Keep doing that until it get fixed. That worked with me
This is so incredibly well done, and with a kind of affection towards those who would be inclined to try, that's it a favorite even if I likely can't pursue the path. Love the tone, the helpful manner, and of course all the detail and narration along the way. The reason here for even considering a fix on 2007 iMac is that the machines to come out of that era were so solidly built and remain utter workhorses. And so the thinking is simply that if you could fix it you might have an operating device for another 5+ years. Well done here!
another way, after i saw the internals in your video i just took a credit card and nudged the lever/arm a bit towards outside (with drive in the computer) and then forced and eject with drvutil tray eject. could hear it completing the cycle (before it just did it a bit) and now its working fine again. and a big THANK YOU for the video!
Thank you Clarence. My drive somehow got stuck mid cycle. None of the utilities, drutil, or the power-on procedures would cycle it. I connected two AA's to the motor terminals and got it to cycle. It now works. Thanks again.
@Joe Vogue Sorry for the late reply. I had a plastic battery holder and used that to hold the batteries. If you don’t have the holder use three pieces of wire and tape to hold the wires on the battery terminals. Connect the batteries in series using one piece and the other two to touch the motor terminals. My motor cycled just like the video.
Clarence, the guide between the shaft and the laser is still stuck, after reversing the voltage on the motor, what do you suggest? Clarence, la guia entre el eje y el laser continua atascada, luego de invertir el voltaje en el motor, que me sugiere
I cannot seem to find the same one on Amazon, but found a similar one that may work. It's "OWC Super slim USB 2.0 Enclosure compatible with Apple Superdrive" Best of luck.
I have too a problem with my optical drive on my MacBook Pro early 2011, I was wondering if your optical drive was making any noise while booting your Mac before it stopped working and after the fix. Mine don't make anymore noise while booting. Before it stopped working it was making a strange noise like the one I heard in your video when you used the external power supply on the battery. I suspect that maybe there a problem with the battery inside the optical drive or a wire that could have been cut. I'm trying here to see if we have the same problem. Thank you!
hello. This video helps a lot. And work for removing that block piece. But when I replace the device in to my MBP. The system block it again immediately after booting. Any suggestion? Thank you
thanks for your help, it's make my superdrive work again, but some time need to type drutil tray eject or drutil eject internal on terminal to wake up again,or some time block again need to take it out to redo as your video, my question is: is there any way to add some grease on mechanic to make it smooth?
My MBP super drive allows me to introduce a CD, but it doesn't grab it anymore. I noticed sometimes it works, but most of the times no. It's an old MBP 2010. Maybe those arms got stuck.
I have problem, how to setup position to prevent locking again. I tried to setup disc to reach free movement of both moving parts. But locked again after startup or 1st insert of disc. :-(
FIXED MINE opening blocked by speaker!: Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13" dvd/cd drive could not insert a disc, opening blocked-couldn't insert disc!... Turns out it was the little subwoofer on that side was blocking the opening! I turned of the Mac and opened the removed the DVD drive to deal with the subwoofer. Turns out the after market speaker edge was too long so I had to use a rasp file and file that end, didn't expose a hole although there is a bass reflex hole close to the end. Then added contact adhesive or double sided tape to the flat ends of the woofer so that it would't pop out of it's pop in place when inserting the DVD drive has a center metal lip that fits into a matching indentation on the woofer. With the filing, the lip no longer pushed the woofer again the end and out of place. Hope this helps someone! My MacBook just keeps on going. Have replaced over the years myself: 2 batteries(Be sure to get apple brand, the first one wasn't and didn't last-now I don't use the battery if I can help it to extend it's lifetime), spinning drive replaced with solid state, 2 sets of speakers-the main speaker eventually goes out and then the volume is very low-after market main & 2 small woofers seem to work great till the die years later like the factory one did, replaced the mag charge cord in the power brick 5 times over the years-crack the brick open with screw driver and access the 2 wires to connect a new charge cord from ebay-tricky to do the first time but works and cheap like new fix!
What to do when DVD Player is not working tho? When I put in any dvd, it spits it out. Whether DVD Player is open or closed, it keeps spitting the disc out... I just want to watch the movie ...
Drutil? That's it? There has to be a reason the drive won't respond like normal. What's causing this? And what is Drutil? Is that really terminal code you can just type in?

Thanks for the recent comments and info! I'm glad this video was useful to other people! :)

Stonearches how did you connect the two AA’s?

Thank you so much Clarence, your method worked on my 2008 iMac's internal drive. Drive is now working!
Thanks a LOT for this video. I was able to repair the drive of my macbook with the same problem. You are a genius, my good man.
Funny enough, this was a pretty good tutorial but as soon as I opened up my SuperDrive, I find a piece of *food wrapping* inside.
i tried this on a mid 2010 macbook pro and it worked!!
i also wanted to tell others that this trick will work on other unibody models
Clarence, the guide between the shaft and the laser is still stuck, after reversing the voltage on the motor, what do you suggest?
Clarence, la guia entre el eje y el laser continua atascada, luego de invertir el voltaje en el motor, que me sugiere
Thanks for the video! worked like a charm. 2 AA batteries worked for me
TYSM!!!!!!! I Thought it wasn’t going to work BUT IT DID
What external case did you purchase?
I cannot seem to find the same one on Amazon, but found a similar one that may work. It's "OWC Super slim USB 2.0 Enclosure compatible with Apple Superdrive" Best of luck.
Nice Vid! Thank you for taking all of the work out of this repair. I've tried everything else so this is my last resort.
It worked for me just 10 minutes ago. Thank you so much :)
Thanks this brought my macbook's drive back to life!
Thanks for the tutorial video. Everything is working again!

Thank you. This worked. I'd tried the 'drutil tray eject' but it did not do the trick.
Have that problem. How is AA Batts hooked up in series suing what gauge conductor.
How about putting it back into the laptop? Did that work for everyone as well? Are you getting the same issue?
Also I forgot to mention I think it needs closer to 5 volts. On the yellow sticker it says 5V, and mine needed 3 AAA batteries to get it to work.
I tried with 2 AA (3.2 v aprox) and nothing... so, are you sure about the 5v?

Fantastic, sorted my drive :)
Thank you! It worked pretty well here! ;)
don't works for me..I tried, I see a light when I apply the 3 v (2 AA battery) and nothing happens :(
Why if I told that that voltage took? Bc this is actually what is wrong with my drive?
Tried this with batteries but that thing got stuck and won't move freely 😭
Special thx man, u are awesome!)
this works just fine!
Thank you, works well ;-)
It works and i used 2AA batteries. I can insert disc now but it eject it after loading for some time 😢
Genius! Thank you!
I was hoping someone liked it. Thanks for the comment!
such an easier way..go on terminal, write a code to eject and it will work !
ok, soo I open the terminal but I don't know what to write. Can you tell me pls?

type : Drutil (dont copy)
Drutil? That's it? There has to be a reason the drive won't respond like normal. What's causing this?
