  • Hi everyone, today I'm sharing with you my lunch time at Honolulu Coffee in Kerrisdale, Vancouver. I enjoyed a cup of latte and roast beef sandwich. I was sitting at a not so ideal spot, but still managed to make my sketch more interesting than the real scenery. Lot of play with lines and shapes, a a bit distortions. Please watch the video until the end for lots of tips and inspirations on how to draw with ink pens and paint watercolors on location.
    🎨 Materials I used:
    - Staedtler 0.7mm fine liner pen
    - Etchr watercolors (24 half pans)
    - Speedball Handbook watercolor journal
    - Holbein Water Brush (large tip)
    - Deserres water brush (Small tip)

Hi Becky! I love your style. You are very inspirational to me on my journey to learn urban sketching. I try to sketch along with you so I can learn the not-so- simple art of transferring what we see to the paper! Please carry on with your videos. They are amazing 👏 😍

It’s so funny how I feel comfortable sketching with pen at home but then I go out and I feel like a total newbie. It’s as if there’s so much stimuli and details that my brain is not used to (yet?) ignoring…. so I don’t even know where to start and I end up with pencil first. Anyway, I can’t wait to try again sketching this huge tree with buildings in the background. It took me 3 hours first time. Next try, I will draw less trees, less buildings. I will focus on just one tree and one building and maybe one other detail like a table or person (to show proportion). Goal is to do it in 2 hrs or less. Someday……. I hope to sketch big like you!!

This scene looks difficult to me because of the perspective from the depth of the cafe. You make it look easy- gives me courage to try! Also like how you make such a common cafe spot look really inviting in the sketch. Thanks!

That type of sketch would take me 2 hours to do ans it would be very wonky and/or have too many details in it.
I'll keep practising on simplifying and try and develop an easy line-work style to capture the key elements as you've shown here. If I can get it down to 45 minutes, that would be great as after an hour I would need to get up and walk to stretch my legs.

You can do it! It takes time and you will achieve it naturally. ☺️
