How wonderful to see this again. I worked on 'Mystery!' at WGBH and wrote Vincent Price's material for his intros and outtros (and then wrote Diana Rigg's for her first season.) It was so good to watch my old friend VP saying these words again. And I remember being on the set for this shoot. By the way, Jeremy Brett was married to 'Mystery!' producer, Joan Wilson, so we were extra careful to get everything right on this "very special" occasion.
When i was a kid, i thought watching pbs was cheap because that's all we had, looking back, i would give anything to live it all over again. This brings back fond memories of my dad sitting in his chair, and me, sitting on the couch watching mystery. Thank you for posting this memory of our wonderful childhood past.
He was the Perfect host for Mystery! A multidimensional man of culinary delights and scary frights! I loved him in The Wax Museum. I remember watching that at a slumber party in the 70's and pulling the covers over our heads.
I too watched these with my mother, also passed. The Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Britt we’re our favorites! I put them on in the background, with the sleep timer, and it peacefully puts me to sleep. I’m sure you find the same peace in the ambience. Bless you.
Wow, I watched this show with my parents. I was about 10 or 11, and this intro always intrigued me, especially the cries of the tied woman. It's wonderful to see it again. Thank you retrontario.
Wow! I came here for Vincent Price (grew up listening to his voice on this program), and when I heard the SH theme music, I froze. The Jeremy Brett series is superb (especially the first season), I didn't expect that at all!
Great memories of watching this with my Mother I was 20 in 1984 ! I still watch all the episodes with Jeremy to this day must have watched each one ten times over but they never get old. Brett was the best holmes ever !
I had the honor of meeting Mr. Price when I was just five years old. From what I remember, he had a very high fever but like the pro that he was, the show went on. He was VERY tall and a perfect gentleman. Now, THAT was special!
Oh, man, that's my childhood right there. Though this episode aired well before I was watching it, I do remember that version of the opening titles, Vincent Price as the host, and those perfect Sherlock Holmes adaptations.
I rem when these were aired by my PBS affiliate as a stand-alone series in 2008-09. The greatest adaptation of Doyle’s iconic works, in my humble opinion.
I'm not a great fan of pbs tv,, but I'm a big fan of Vincent Price,, Vincent was the most distinguished man ever, he was an amazing person, & one of the greatest actor's & story tellers that ever lived,, R.i.P. Mr.Price...
@@mysteriomarvel933 Vincent Price’s intros are probably stored somewhere in WGBH’s (excuse me, GBH’s) vault. A generous couple has donated to help digitize Alistair Cooke’s Masterpiece Theatre intros and make them available online on GBH Open Vault. I’m sure a secret Santa might write a check to help make it possible to make VP’s intros available.
I came just to hear the old Mystery intro before it was merged into Masterpiece. Brilliant. My 2 yr old daughter would mimic the wailing woman in the intro when she heard the Mystery music on. Hilarious.
Remember when the Boscombe Valley Mystery speech was on RUclips a long, long time ago? The late Dame Diana Rigg introduced The Boscombe Valley Mystery speech and gave the audience the final message. What did she wear? Her white suit.
I read a book on Vincent's movie career, and in it, they listed a murder mystery movie in which he played, of all things, a Scotland Yard detective. I wish I could remember the name of the film
No problem, glad to help. I was looking into the artwork of Edward Gorey (his art was animated by Derek Lamb for the Mystery! intro.) and I saw this one and got nostalgic listening to that fiddle intro., so I did a little research. It also goes by the name of Sherlock Holmes original soundtrack. The composers daughter Katherine Gowers plays the fiddle in the intro.
it was vincent price that was my reason for watching this back in the day. he was perfectly fit for host of this mystery program. i wish pbs would air them again.
I love this dear man, Mr. Vincent Price. His voice was so beautiful. I really miss him. I have loved Sherlock Holmes since I was a child.I like Jeremy Brett, but Basil Rathbone was my favorite! Edward Gorey's artwork is wonderful. Does PBS still show the Sherlock Holmes series?
Empirical exploitation or Imperial exploitation? Or both? I just wonder if that was a flubbed line? Not trying to make a social comment here, though I will say that little speech was one of the better summations of the Victorian era that I've ever heard, with all its vices and virtues. Poetic! And Vincent Price really brings it home ... he is missed!
i was a kid back then, well 12 when this aired but it was still the era of Star Wars mania for people my age. and i never really was into the Mystery shows at that time but i always loved that animated intro.
Interestingly both actors were in the movie Theater of Blood which was a horror movie that was based on the murder scenes in Shakespeare's plays. Rigg played Price's daughter in that one.
hmm...his voice sounds as sharp and crisp then as it did in years past. by the early '90s his voice went a little higher and he did sound a bit winded between sentences but that was mostly due to his illness. he had developed lung cancer at some point in the early '90s and then Parkinson's Disease on top of that. But to my ears, this 1984 clip, he sounds perfectly fine and in command of his voice...doesn't sound weak to me. Vincent continued with this show until 1989. He began hosting it in 1981
I always thought that Vincent Price hosted the Show better than Diana Rigg did . Though she still explained or introduced the stories well it just did not have the same sense of Mystery inn her intros mainly due to the voice that Vincent had and the fact that Vincent Price practically oozed mystery and suspense
@victorianlulu Last season Masterpiece/ Mystery aired a new Sherlock Holmes. My local network WLIW Channel 21 airs The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes ( Jeremy Brett) about 4 times a week. Tuesday 5 & 7 pm, Saturday 7 pm and early Monday morning at 1:30.
Vincent price is awesome, but watching this intro for the first time as an adult makes me realize that the set they filmed it on is super cheesy and low budget. I think that was actually a good thing, the intro and the set it was filmed on weren't meant to be taken seriously and added charm to the production.

We fans thank you for your good work, @ChiChiFargo! :) Good on you!
Thanks for sharing a great story!
Many thanks. This series was formative for me.
Love Vincent❤
Thank You so much!!!
I miss when PBS shows had quality content... and taste...ah it raised me well.
Wish it would come back
I agree! I owe my cultural and intellectual enrichment to most of PBS programs back in the day.

This brings back fond memories of my dad sitting in his chair, and me, sitting on the couch watching mystery. Thank you for posting this memory of our wonderful childhood past.
We so much need Vincent Price today, he is severely missed
Vincent Price introduced me to elegance, which I had never grown up with, but every Thursday evening on PBS, elegance is what I saw!
He was the Perfect host for Mystery! A multidimensional man of culinary delights and scary frights! I loved him in The Wax Museum. I remember watching that at a slumber party in the 70's and pulling the covers over our heads.
I used to watch with my mom. She's passed now. How this video tugs nostalgically at my heart.
I too watched these with my mother, also passed. The Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Britt we’re our favorites! I put them on in the background, with the sleep timer, and it peacefully puts me to sleep. I’m sure you find the same peace in the ambience. Bless you.
Vincent, you will be remembered for your distinguished intros. Masterful!
There's something incredibly soothing about his voice
Yes, a beautiful voice and a beautiful man. His son and daughter must just burst with pride!
I met Vincent Price right around this time. He had just done Thriller. A remarkable gentleman.
Wow, I watched this show with my parents. I was about 10 or 11, and this intro always intrigued me, especially the cries of the tied woman. It's wonderful to see it again. Thank you retrontario.
It wasn't until I saw the clips on RUclips that I realized her feet were bound. I thought she was just wailing for no apparent reason.
We were fortunate to grow up watching this masterpiece.
Wow! I came here for Vincent Price (grew up listening to his voice on this program), and when I heard the SH theme music, I froze. The Jeremy Brett series is superb (especially the first season), I didn't expect that at all!
PBS always had class.
Great memories of watching this with my Mother I was 20 in 1984 ! I still watch all the episodes with Jeremy to this day must have watched each one ten times over but they never get old. Brett was the best holmes ever !
There was just something about Vincent Price that was so unique and so special it transcends words
R.I.P Vincent Price, 1911 - 1993.
Jane Doe I was a Junior in high school when Vincent Price passed away.
love this...The Sherlock Holmes with the late Jeremy Brett is my favorite!
Wow! The great Vincent Price giving intro to the most stunning man to ever live!
I had the honor of meeting Mr. Price when I was just five years old. From what I remember, he had a very high fever but like the pro that he was, the show went on. He was VERY tall and a perfect gentleman. Now, THAT was special!
I wish I could have met him as I loved him in 80s.
I remember watch this series when I was in my teens when most of my friends were hanging out at night. I miss it terribly.
Oh, man, that's my childhood right there. Though this episode aired well before I was watching it, I do remember that version of the opening titles, Vincent Price as the host, and those perfect Sherlock Holmes adaptations.
Same here! I can still hum the theme song, even without looking up this opening. 😂
Also try: *Masterpiece Mystery*
When Public Television was a joy to watch. I waited eagerly for each new episode on Thursdays 9pm on Ch 13, NY. Rebroadcast on Ch 21 Long Island.
The Great Vincent Price and the great Jeremy Brett!
Thank you for posting!

I SSSOOO miss the onld PBS mystrey ;-((
not to mention the 1980s!
I remember watching the original broadcast .Great to see this again.
OH MY GOD I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOOOREEEVVER thank you for posting!
These aesthetics of the strange characters in this Mystery! intro are really really different. : )

How I wish these episodes with the Edward Gorey animation and Vincent Price's introductions were available on DVD.
Me too..its 2022 and I'd still like to obtain these shows with Vincent Price's intros. Does anyone know if and where they are available?

Somebody rescue that woman on the pillar! Her noises are driving me crazy!
That distressed ingenue has been wailing since the 1980s! Won't somebody help her? :)
Love the artwork! V. Price is king!
I LOVED this show as a kid!
I grew up watching this with my grandmother. Love it!!!!
I watched Mystery! Host by the late Mr price growing up.
This bloke was a fuckin' gangster. And a WW2 hero.
This is indeed a classic clip. Vincent Price has been on my mind all week.
I used to look for Mystery just to hear Mr. Price speak. Man-thats CLASS!!!!
Vincent Price was such a class act. An excellent actor and host.
I came just to hear the old Mystery intro before it was merged into Masterpiece. Brilliant. My 2 yr old daughter would mimic the wailing woman in the intro when she heard the Mystery music on. Hilarious.
I read two of Mr Holmes' books... The Boscolme Valley Mystery and the Mystery Of the Five Orange Pips
Remember when the Boscombe Valley Mystery speech was on RUclips a long, long time ago? The late Dame Diana Rigg introduced The Boscombe Valley Mystery speech and gave the audience the final message. What did she wear? Her white suit.
It's Vincent "Ratigan" Price! =)
& I love Jeremy Brett, too! XD
This intro mesmerized me as a child, it made me feel like the adult world was impossibly fascinating and mysterious.
In less than five minutes we've got Edward Gorey, Vincent Price, Arthur Conan-Doyle, and Jeremy Brett. Now I can die happy.
I loved Vincent Price and I loved this series. Absolutely perfect!!!
I still have the recordings of the episodes on vhs! One of my absolute favorites as a kid (and forever), splendid!
I read a book on Vincent's movie career, and in it, they listed a murder mystery movie in which he played, of all things, a Scotland Yard detective. I wish I could remember the name of the film

Don't you mean the violin!
i call my violin a fiddle frequently, apologies

Vincent Price is amazing.
I remember this as a kid ❤️

Price, Gorey, and Brett....oh how my heart throbs.... I have a "thing" for dashing gentelmen.
My all-time favorite Sherlock Holmes Jeremy Brent!!
I was too young to get into the show, but I always thought the cartoon was funny.
Because quality shows like this no longer exist, is why I sold my television over ten years ago.
It's why it should've been a state-controlled network allowed to continue this way.
Not when the state itself is making the cutbacks.
Reductive dismissal. Quality shows like this still exist. Perhaps you might consider finding a way to rent a copy of "The Tunnel," for example.
They really don’t. Plus they don’t have the caliber of actors and writers and directors like this anymore.
@@Scarpia9111 "Everything was better when I was young."
I was 4 when I started watching this now 38 and still loving this
Loved Vincent Price as the host. Diana Rigg, too. Masterpiece Mystery's intro pales by comparison.
I loved Diana Rigg as the host, too. (And I still do.) It is too bad she died of cancer.
Beautiful memories of my childhood and my mom

OMG-I miss Vincent Price
I grew up with this show. I miss this show Vincent Price was the best
Absolutely delicious!!!!
A hero introducing another hero, played by another hero.
love.
As a kid I didn’t care about the stories. I just wanted to watch the creepy opening and Price’s intros.
As mentioned below, the art was Gorey's.
Derek Lamb adapted and animated it.
:)
I️ wanted him to break out into his evil ‘Thriller’ laugh after mentioning....Ir-r-rena Adler.
i was a kid back then, well 12 when this aired but it was still the era of Star Wars mania for people my age. and i never really was into the Mystery shows at that time but i always loved that animated intro.
The Best Mystery host by far.
That was the best opening for Mystery.
Both classic Mystery! openings are great.
Yes this was before Diana Rigg and Alan Cumming took over
Vincent Price tell me why your so nice Vincent Prince I want to be like you oh I wish I had your job I want to take you home with me la la la la
*faves* i hadn't seen this version of the 'mystery!' program. i wasn't born til after they changed it XD
wow you met Vincent Price. Was he the kind of star that was easy going.
Gads, I watched these when they were new...
Rockin'...I
The artwork is by Edward Gorey :)
Interestingly both actors were in the movie Theater of Blood which was a horror movie that was based on the murder scenes in Shakespeare's plays. Rigg played Price's daughter in that one.
Thanks
Edward Gorey
I prefer Sesame Street’s - Vincent Twice... Vincent Twice...
Oh my gosh, I had forgotten that!
@@ErykaSoleil Yeah. Vincent Twice is pretty obscure.
@thEannoyingE Edward Gorey was the animator :) a good interview with Gorey is on the PBS page :) about mystery! and other things.

Used from February 1980 until May, 1990. They got rid of "Gorey Manor" in Diana Rigg's second season.
Vincent Tw...oh wait!
Is there anywhere that I can watch the full episode?🥲❤️💀

now why did they have pterodactyl at the begining
Now that's a MYSTERY!
I had always thought it was a demon or gargoyle. The simplest answer is probably, “Because Edward Gorey was animating it.” 😁
actually it was Derek Lamb's work
So Vincent Price and Vincent the Vegetable Vampire shared a network?
It's kind of odd, seeing someone other than Diana Rigg host this.
there was a sesame street one?
