  • This is how we got rid of these little monsters. I could find nothing on it anywhere for a hydroponics system this size. I tried several ways to get rid of them. This way works!

      These are different from typical aphids. They are longer and dark brown for the most part. I had never dealt with them until just recently. Ants can transport them from soil into the system. I know way to much about them now.. lol
      Thanks for the support buddy!

    Y’all are awesome, we love hydroponics. What an awesome set up. Here in the Midwest can’t find many hydroponic farmers there was one and it went out of business. Wish y’all were closer. Glad you were able to get rid of those pest. That’s a ton of work guys, sorry you had to go through that. Appreciate you sharing the good the bad and the ugly, keeping it real. Thanks for sharing new friends. Blessings on your business.

      I have learned more about these monsters lately.
      They breed in algae so get rid of that and treat the areas with a product called wet n forget. Fog with a product called NoFly weekly for 3 weeks to kill living aphids and weekly to get the ones as they hatch out.
      Best of luck my friend.

    I was thinking how I'd attack your cleaning to expedite it. Not aphids, but just cleaning so it's not so labor-some. I think I'd get a 10' (or longer if needed) 6" round PVC sewer pipe, use removable caps, fill with a wash solution and put my rails in it for a period of time, capping and soaking. Might be able to get 2 (3?) in it. 4" sewer pipe might work too. I'd get a second pipe with bleach solution added to sanitize for a period of time depending on bleach strength after the wash tube. No need to rinse between wash and bleach tubes. Could move onto something else for a few hours or a day while they soak in each. Should be able to just rinse afterwards. Maybe easier than scrubbing??

    I've been using hydrogen peroxide food grade for the washing of the channels. Can replant right away instead of waiting for the channels to air dry with the bleach. And if I dont get it fully all rinsed it won't hurt the plant roots as it gets even more diluted in the reservoir. Great looking plants! Thanks for the heads up I haven't seen em yet but will keep an eye out!

    • @FensterfarmGreenhouse
      @FensterfarmGreenhouse  4 года назад +2

      I tried it with hydrogen peroxide Kenny but I couldn’t get it to cut through the algae on the ends of the channel’s. Bleach water does the trick though. I have 30 extra troughs so letting them sit for a bit isn’t a problem.
      Thanks for the kind words.

    Hey Chuck, sorry you had to go to all that extra work. Aphids suck, I had Muir in raised beds in my hoop house last fall, had to use pyrethrum to get rid of black aphids, "most of them". Its hard to get spray down in the tight heads. I had some sick pumpkins a few years ago, when I pulled them up I found root aphids. Just when we think we've got it all figured out , mother nature throws a another curve ball.

    I just wanted to know what they look like. I take it they don't fly then? I've got like tiny sand flies buzzing around my roots and I'm trying to workout if they're gnats or something. I think they're just little sand fly things though that we get down here in Aus and really aren't doing any damage but I'm not sure.

    • @FensterfarmGreenhouse

      Get rid of all the algae and rotting vegetation that is in the system. Place jars with about an inch of white or cider vinegar in them then put the lids on the jars. Poke several holes in the lids so the gnats can get in there. Place the jars throughout the system where you see the gnats or the damage to the plants.
      This works well for fungus gnats.

      Place a jar like this every 10 feet or so in your environment. It’s the only thing that I have found that works. If by chance you are dealing with root aphids instead of fungus gnats, you will have to shut down your operation where ever you have the infestation and clean it really well then let it sit for about a month without any vegetation in there to make sure that any eggs that might make it passed the cleaning process die of starvation after hatching out.
      I just had to do that. Good luck
