Jana here showing the real advantages of having variety in your game. She was able to mix up pace and spins, and play from the net or baseline. She could adapt so well and give her opponent exactly what they didn't want. Venus wasn't always the best at dealing with someone who was constantly changing spins and pace, coming in and staying back.

Venus always committed to coming forward more in all of her matches with Novotna. Kinda wish she’d continued to play this way moving into her prime years. Might’ve gotten both the Oz and RG slams this way.

I came here to watch venus play after I watched her SF highlights against Graf and I must admit I COMPLETELY forgot how good of a player Novotna was. You can just see the contrast in their playing styles so clearly. Venus so young and running from side to side with all of those long limbs seeming to fly all over the place and Novotna, older, more experienced... with small quick steps moving around the court like a boxer in a ring and seeming to never have to rush too much to get to a ball. Venus with a MUCH better ground game and first serve but makes a lot of errors and winners and her second serve was a very real liability, whereas Novotna didn't go for aces but more for a way to be best positioned for the next shot she expected to come back to her. Her second serve was MILES better than Venus' and I forgot how stylish her game was (especially compared with today's stars). Navratilova had a much more clunky and muscular but effective Serve and Volley game while Novotna's was so pretty to watch, her transition from back court to net was so fast and smooth and that backhand volley is a thing of beauty. Her style of play is very much missed on tour by many fans of the sport. Federer brought a lot of style to the game for the men after the Sampras/ Agassi/ Phillipousis big serving, big groundstroke era but in terms of elegance of movement and shot making at the net I'm not sure I can' think of one since like Novotna on the ladies side who did as well in terms of rank and titles. You're missed Jana. RIP

When you say Venus had a much better ground game - in at least one respect, Novotna's was much better - variety. Jana had the ability to mix up pace and spins (something Venus didn't) and it drove a lot of her opponents crazy. She could disrupt their rhythm and timing so well. Venus wasn't always very good at dealing with that kind of thing.
