I published a new video lesson: Jazz Chord Essentials - Shell Voicings The sheet music for the examples are on my website: jenslarsen.nl/jazz-chord-essentials-shell-voicings/ This my first attempt at a video lesson :) Hope you like it!
You have a style with these lessons that is very simple. There is a big focus on demonstration and exercise and I greatly admire that. It makes it rather easy to digest for a player like myself who has an advanced understanding of technique and application but a rather low level understanding of theory and technicality. Very good job, sir! Also, your playing is gorgeous.
Thanks Conner! I am very happy you can use my lessons! Feel free to let me know if you have any questions or suggestions :) And if you want to help me and like a lesson then share it on social media.
Your playing is amazing Jens.. So inspiring. I have heard of Shell voicing but until now I never understood. The more I find out the more I realise.. All roads lead to Jazz. Great stuff!
Outstanding contribution! Thank you! The tab is very helpful and I like that the music notes are included there too to help me learn them. Really well thought out material to accompany the video.
Jeg fatter hat for det meste (ville ønske jeg kunne jazze), men jeg kan alligevel godt lide at se dine videoer. Du spiller fantastisk og har en meget rolig stemme 😊
Would you make a .pdf of the sheet music available? Forgive me if it's there, but I went to the sheet music link on your website and couldn't find a download. THANK YOU for the lesson(s).
Well, it's a blue hairband, and I sometimes use as an open string mute it when doing some legato exercises. I am not using it in this video, if you look closely you can probably see that it is behind the nut. I get a lot of questions and remarks about it though, so you're hardly the only one who wonders :D
Haha it's not that simple, though it is close :) If you find the m7b5 chord troublesome the best place to start is probably to leave out the root, you hardly ever need it anyway and try to figure out what you have left then ;)
Superbe lesson !However on 1mn26 I take a time to understand this importante phrase what could be written on your blog: " For both fingering, I keep the Chordpath on the middle string....
+Alban Blue Thanks Alban! What I am saying is: "For both of them, I keep the chord part of the voicing on the middle strings" It is written in the article too though in slightly different words :)
+Alban Blue In your blog you write"There are rules for voice-leading, but the essence is that if you don’t have to go to the closest note in the next chord when going from one chord to the next.. Setting the chords up like this makes it easy to stay in one place with the chord and move the root a 4th or a 5th " ?Do you want to say that you don't have to go to the closest note in the next chord ? Could you tell us more about those rules?
+Alban Blue In fact in my first message , I wanted to speak and share the fingering: it seems that you try to keep playing the middle string with your first finger as long as it's possible. Not natural , but it seems to be the most efficient.
So Danco Samba, but actually it's a fairly generic progression in Brazilian music so it's very close to a lot of other songs like Girl from Ipanema, Desafinado and O Pato.
Nice lesson. Happy 10 year RUclips anniversary.
Thanks Paul!

true I didn't make pdf's at that time. I'll have a look tomorrow :)
Thx for the tip. Now the examples are also available as a pdf download
What exactly are you using to control the sound(blue thing) cheers!!

Why didn't anyone tell me you can just leave out a b5? VII always annoyed me! Thanks mate.

+Jens Larsen ok I should be less affirmative!I don't understand the meaming; what do you call the chord part of the voicing?
The chord part of the voicing is the 3rd and 7th found on the middle string set
+Alban Blue In your blog you write"There are rules for voice-leading, but the essence is that if you don’t have to go to the closest note in the next chord when going from one chord to the next.. what did you say from 6:45-6:55?
I am explaining that they are very useful as a starting point for Brazilian grooves like samba bossanova.
Jens Larsen cool thanks for the reply. what song is the one you played after 7:10?
So Danco Samba, but actually it's a fairly generic progression in Brazilian music so it's very close to a lot of other songs like Girl from Ipanema, Desafinado and O Pato.
Jens Larsen ok cool. I'm very new to this style
Go listen to the Brazilian guys! Joao Bosco, Rosa Passos, Joao Gilberto etc. etc. This is great music invented on guitar!
Google plus was the only thing that didn’t hold up! 8:19
Indeed! 😁
happy to see you were able to kick that nasty heroine addiction.. cheers boss
