The Nimbus means that he doesn't have to waste energy flying. Don't forget this still isn't too far from DB at this time, and back in DB, flying actually took a lot of stamina to maintain. While in Z it gets pretty much ignored as now everyone can fly, it still harks back to the time when flight was difficult (they do a throwback in the Buu saga, as Gohan starts using the Nimbus for school travel, and Videl was incapable of sustaining flight for long). It would also be less noticeable from the ground (they see a cloud moving fast from the ground, which is noticeable, but less so than a person flying), and doesn't seem to use energy so it would be harder to detect if the rider hid its Ki, but this is never really utilised in series.
In the first cooler movie Gohan rode on Icarus to avoid being detected by the henchmen and the only reason he was caught was because Icarus flew to high.(Pun not intended)

To be fair, goku's kill count started likely at the same year(or even earlier, we dont know how many people goku faced before he faced Grandpa Gohan), besides, I think Gohan is supposed to be 6-ish on Namek. He was 5 when he was introduced and it took a year before the Saiyans attacked, making him 6 during the Saiyan attack.
It never really hit its full potential. It started to feel like it was done in a full-on production office during the cell saga. It peaked literally in the final episode of the series, but they were only getting better and better. We never got to see DBZA's full potential without the Buu Saga. Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans is a good taste though.
He doesnt heal on the way there because he needs 100% of the time to train. Remember they know that there's someone far stronger than vageta on the planet and if goku didnt train he probably would've been as useless as krillin.
At 5:08 they asked why they didn't heal Goku during travel. Couple reasons. 1. They did not expect combat. The Namekians are considered peaceful so they weren't expecting to run into Vegeta and certainly not Frieza. 2. The Kami's spaceship was complicated and wasn't based on Earth tech.

At the beginning of the buu saga gohan comments that he is probably faster than nimbus, being unsure says a lot, while gohan is weaker at that time than during the cell fight he is still about the same level that trunks and vageta were during that time which is far more powerful than any mortal up till the hyperbolic time chamber goku and gohan. nimbus is really fast.
