  • How to Shoot Self Takes Remotely on Your Phone
    Easy Catch Shots using your Phone!
    The iPhone 11 is capable of shooting some really nice photographs, so I set about looking at how I could rig my phone to take selfies and fishing catch shots remotely. These techniques can also be used to shoot loads of other different pictures, from wildlife shots, to landscape shots, in fact any time that you want to appear in the picture, or need to take a picture whilst not holding the camera.
    In this video I look at the hardware I use to support the phone that are cheap and easy to use and three ways of remotely taking pictures with the minimum of gear that will allow you to take better catch shots using your phone.

    Having explored a lot of options over the years the most reliable way I've found with a phone is to use the video camera rather than taking individual shots. You just do a quick test roll to make sure you know where to kneel and that your shot is framed correctly while the catch waits in the net. Once you're happy you can set the camera rolling and do a variety of poses or what ever you fancy and then just screen grab the still images from the video. Not sure about Iphones but Samsung phones make this very easy with being able to go frame by frame and dump the images straight into the gallery.
    I use one of those cheap Chinese extendible tripods from ebay rather than a bankstick simply because it makes life easier when you're on hard ground or a platform. Size wise they take up about as much room as a thermos flask and weigh less than a pound. Certainly worth having in the armoury for less than £15

      That’s really interesting and I’ll definitely try taking a frame from the video. It’s something I’ve tried on my camera, but as it only shoots 1080HD the image size of a still isn’t very big - ok for online, but a bit small for printing. The phone is 4K, which is ok. Especially at 60 frames per second, which should cut down on any slight movement.
      Interesting. More fiddling about to be done! Thanks for sharing! Tight lines. Paul

      @@drpaulgarner I'm no photographer so I can't claim to know too much about image quality and all that. My phone is only an old S5 which I guess shoots at about 720p in video but the stills taken from video seem to be about equal quality to those taken with the camera. I just found it useful because it saves the frustration and uncertainty with taking blind shots with the main lens, you can always find a few good angles in the video rather than having to mess the fish around while you check you got the shots you wanted

    Like the remote dongle 👍 A good app I use is ‘Photo Timer+’. Although you have to actually reach over and press the button on the phone to begin, once done you can set the delay for when it takes the photo giving plenty of time to set yourself up. You can also set how many photos you want and the delay between each one. Great app imo.

    Been using the 'whistle app', with the same bank stick set up as yours for about two years now Paul and as you say its brilliant, especially when you take into consideration the weight and bulk savings re a DSLR set up. I also advise an external light also on attached to a bank stick for night shots, positioned adjacent and above the camera phone. So two bank sticks with attachments, your phone and an adjustable light box .... its the end of the line for bulky camera set ups and much more reliable I reckon

    Thats a really handy guide! I've just started trying to do self takes using my phone with a little tripod and one of those bluetooth remotes, but haven't been able to get photos quite right just yet. Also, have you got any underwater filming tips for improving camera placement and settings ect?

    • @drpaulgarner
      @drpaulgarner  4 года назад +1

      Thanks mate. I found it took a while to get used to the remote but it was worth sticking with it.
      Underwater stuff, big subject that! Try to find the shallowest spot you can, plus ideally the bottom needs to be flat. The water also needs to be REALLY clear - that’s the biggest problem normally. Try to get the camera as close to the subject as you can for the same reason - less murky stuff between the camera and the interesting stuff! Hope that’s useful! I’ll maybe try and put something together on underwater stuff when I get a chance. Tight lines! Paul

      @@drpaulgarner Thanks for the advice, I'll definetly try those out on my next time filming! I've got 1 underwater film up on my youtube channel at the moment if you wanted to take a look to see my current efforts. Got some more film of roach and perch the other day when out fishing but didn't get the camera angle quite right! Would waiting to a bit later in the day when light intensity is theoretically higher help improve picture quality to cut through some of the gloom? Thanks again for your help!!

    Another way is to set up the video camera instead of just camera. Then press record. Once you’ve finished recording yourself, you can go back on the video and take stills from that. It works a treat

    Or, just buy a selfie stick with tripod and bluetooth remote on Amazon for about £16, easy. Might be a bit unstable in the wind, but easy to move around.

    I've been looking everywhere for a bluetooth dongle that I can activate with my knew. Sadly they are all too small and fragile. I'm not keen on holding it whilst also holding certain fish species who do like to move around a fair bit. Currently on the android phone using voice command. It involves me loudly saying "shoot", I've had the odd weird look (as I fish mainly in busy city areas).
