Jaco was to bass what Jimi was to guitar. Phenomenal musicianship and deft showmanship.

Does Jaco actually quote "The Sound of Music" at 1:52???

Sure sounds like it. He would quote all sorts of things in his solos - many from watching television as a kid. He told his brother Greg that he often quoted a Dial soap commercial.

His long solo really wasn't improvised. He would quote the same things every time and end the same way. There are several recordings of it.

What is confusing to me is it doesn’t seem like no one really ever stood up to Joe Zawinul or called him out on his hater bullshit. I would have, no lie. Ok yes he was brilliant but Joe was clearly full of himself and pretty narcissistic from what I keep hearing about him. He shouldn’t have cut Jaco down the way he did or anyone else. I think he was intimidated by Jaco, because why else would have called a masterpiece he wrote “high school band bullshit”….? Seems obvious to me.

Jaco was a huge fan of the television show THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY and the youngest son played by Danny Bonaduce was the bass player in their band - Jaco was a huge fan of Danny's bass playing and copped many of his licks, style, tone, intonation from Danny. If not for the show THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY you do not have a Jaco as we know him.

Except that Danny B. couldn’t play bass at all. He just faked it. It’s well known that all of the Partridge Family’s recordings were made by LA’s most elite studio musicians, aka The Wrecking Crew.

@@MusicLiberatesWhen Motown moved to Los Angeles in the early seventies, Danny Partridge played bass on all the Jackson Five songs. He later joined Linda Ronstadt's band, and co-produced Jimmy Buffett's early albums.

As a player, I didn't like the direction Danny Partridge went in as he got older. Too much treble for my taste. And I still think his switch to Alembic in '77 was a mistake. His album with Jan Hammer was excellent, though.

Yes, but Jaco was also mentally ill. Drugs certainly ruined his metal heath even more
