Yes, Yes, Yes! I'm so glad this video is finally up! My opinions are the same as yours dude! In fact if I am to be honest I think Princess Blue Buns is among the worst characters the reboot has ever made. And as well as the entire PPG's universe as a whole. And not to mention it highlights the shows bread and butter, which is essentially using plots form other forms of media, doing nothing to differ themselves from the original material, and turning it into shameless pop culture with either terrible implications or a means to sell out their fetish for modern slang/references. Why is it always rap that they go for anyway? It really feels like they do it solely as a trendy stereotype or poor read of society. Also Buttercup's beat-boxing sounds like a Duck choking on something to big for it to handle, or being strangled to death.
This is easily my least favorite episode tied with "Little Octi Lost" And along with the TERRIBLE moral that I swear the writers tried to hide because unless you dove into the implication you'd completely miss. It makes it as if Blue Bun's character is suppose to be some kind of great choice to follow. This is easily one of those situations where the writer's pride easily just wants their judgement to overflow anything. The Girls being damsels is only there simply to show the "Slice of life" element, but in the process the girls forget they have powers and the show forgets they're suppose to be heroes. At least in "Somethings a Ms" it was to develop Ms Bellum. Twisted Sister was the same way for Bunny. People also bring up "Power Lunch" too (honestly they were pretty stupid in that episode)
Also Shadow And as far as the kissing scene goes, yeah it only lasts a bit, but it really feels like it was added just to imply LGBT reaction, to which case its either a parody or response. It might be nitpicky, but It always just how the implication came off and seems to be its only purpose. I think what's the most disappointing about Blue Bun's character is she could've been a great answer to fantasy/princess culture/archetype, with many of the elements from princess tropes with a great moral. Dare I say even Disney! But no we get, that "Message" which was the only purpose her character served! It made my blood boil after seeing that. They get rid of a great messaged, solely to subject this character into a role of content and selfishness. All to give their implication of suicide, great job writers. -_- It also teaches people to be weak emotionally and always revolve your life on someone saving you.

I think the kiss scene was more of a joke, since stuff like that has been done before; the whole 'kiss against a kiss, EW GROSS!' thing. I know Naruto did it when Sasuke and Naruto were trying to out asshole each other and get knocked into each other thanks to some other kid, breaking the tension and making them look like idiots in the process.

    • @Surgemaster2012

True I mean it could be a joke, not denying that. But putting this show's record on display it wouldn't surprise me if they were trying to aim for a type of reaction though.

If there is anything this show has made me see is that I don't trust the writers in making anything revolutionary as they have claimed. Everything they've done has not been done from 'inspiration' but rather they've completely lifted ideas and INTENTIONS from better shows in hopes they can get points simply by COPYING. If that shows anything, it shows the crew came into this series with no real intention on creating anything bur rather to get credit for themselves without working to fully earn it.
As for the episode itself, it's a tired trope where they try to dismantle the princess archetype but crash even before they get past the starting line. It's not really dismantling anything; just the writers showing they don't like princesses or girly-girls and trying to pass it off with a half-assed 'Girl can be anything' but not really showing that they CAN. If they DID, they really would have shown there is no issue with girls liking overtly girly things, that it's okay so long as you're not submissive and let others BULLY you or convince you that you constantly need to depend on someone else.
What is so ironic about this is that the new crew HEAVILY push BUTTERCUP as the forefront of the group because she has been confirmed to be the creator's favorite but as far as a person, Buttercup is a horrible child and a horrible hero yet her attitude is the type the crew feels that girls should follow as an example because she is NOT girly which is a horrible thing to tell girls or ANYONE regardless of their gender or age. So no, the crew are not giving girls a choice nor are they saying all girls are welcomed at the table as the original interview stated. They're basically saying 'Be cool like us otherwise you can never be a hero like the Powerpuff Girls.'
Considering the new girls have done fuck all to show us they're heroes, that says a lot to that statement.

if they were going for anything lgbt, they instead have the kiss come off as gay panic and just grossly homophobic in general. I also wish they hadn't had the kiss at all, it does nothing but maybe make the viewer uncomfortable

It should have turned out that the dragon was her "prince" and in order to regain his human form, _she_ needed to do something brave and not just recklessly stupid, so he captured the girls hoping she'd come rescue them. Then he blows her off for being so suicidally reckless up to that point, turns back into a dragon, and flies away.

And the sad part, this episode was nominated for an Emmy. Just how in the holy word of Craig McCracken did this episode got nominated with its major flaws everywhere. My guess that Nick Jennings just bribed the Emmy crew just to nominate it just for attention. He's desperate just to get this show to be popular.
I'm happy that Robot Chicken won the Emmy instead. At least that show is WAY more entertaining that this mess of a reboot.

Why did she take this gig? You are tearing me apart, Laura Bailey!
It's a sad day where I can take someone who's inner turmoil manifested itself as a gentleman's club more seriously than someone who wants some guidance in their life by being a damsel in distress. I take it that calling the bit...*ahem*...princess Blueballs was intentional.
And I don't understand why certain cartoons have difficulty portraying suicide properly. As you said, it's a very serious and prevalent issue, and it is BEGGING to be depicted properly.
But this isn't the first time that a CN show has completely dropped the ball with a heavy-handed topic. It really disappoints me, and the fact that episodes CAN be nominated for awards, let alone a very prestigious one, is outrageous.

It's so annoying lol nothing else in the town is drawn in a twisty flat way... at least in Super Mario tons of inanimate objects had faces on em so it was like the style of the fantasy world as a whole. • @pickles4613
      @pickles4613 5 лет назад +2

I’d write this episode in 2 different ways.
      1. (With the moral they were going with) A new cartoon in the city of Townsville! It’s all weird and goofy and no one likes it. The girls sit inside while scoffing at what a joke the show was. Cut to school time! A new kid is introduced in one of Buttercup's classes. His name was Jeremy. He was made out to be super tough and serious about things unless he didn’t think there was much point in looking at it. His main hobby was doing karate and sports. Buttercup admires him for these things and they become friends. After a while they start coming to each other’s houses. One of the times when Buttercup went to his house, she catches him watching the cartoon and thinks less of him for that and looks at him like a goofy wimp. Soon Buttercup gets a call from the mayor saying that there is a monster attacking the city that Bubbles and Blossom were fighting but got caught (as always) leaving Buttercup to have to fight him alone. Or so she thought. After Buttercup gets caught just like her sisters, Jeremy comes in to stop the monster and save the girls. Buttercup then apologizes for being so rude and judgmental to Jeremy and forgives her.
BUUUUTT, if the princess theme absolutely HAD to be in the episode I’d write it like this
      2. (Suicide prevention) let’s say we keep all the stuff that happens before prince shows up. After Bluebell takes out the dragon, the girls congratulate her and she finally realizes that the prince isn’t going to show up. Blossom tells her that she shouldn’t put herself in such dangerous situations for such a deluded reason. If the girls weren’t there to stop her than she wouldn’t have been standing there right that second. She apologizes for pushing the girls away like how she did and is brought back to her world.

Wanna see this episode done right? Go watch The Hero from Wander Over Yonder (hmm, another Craig McCracken show). Instead of trying to be politically correct and teach some lesson about whatever, it goes solely for comedy and I LOVE it. It was hilarious. I especially enjoyed the portrayal of the Prince in that episode as a spoiled child who demands that everything goes according to the prophecy, as well as Wander and Sylvia (the "goofy sidekicks") easily defeating all the obstacles in their path. Check it out, if you haven't already. You'll get a kick out of it.

Oh boy, this episode.... Honestly, I don't get where the writers were going with this episode. If it's to supposedly "teach a moral" then it was done horribly. If it was to make the girls learn a lesson then wtf was the lesson then? The girls literally did nothing wrong. They never said she couldn't be girly or like dresses so what lesson did they need to learn?
Or if it was to teach the princess a lesson then the execution was terrible. I know it was making fun of the usual damsel in distress tropes but execution wise, it could of went better. Hell, I think they should of definitely re-written this episode. Like, the girls should of shown her many things she could do rather than just waiting for a prince that may or may not save her.
If they went that direction, it would of been a nice little progressive episode while also teaching females that they can do whatever they want and nobody has to tell them otherwise. Unfortunately this ended up a jumbled up mess of an episode. And yeah, this was a really solid video Shadow. :)

Considering in Something's A Miss that Sedusa mentions her hair gel being specially created to fight the power puffs, I don't see why having the girls get insta-captured and one-hit KOed by every bad guy in this incarnation, and said bad guy getting beaten by someone who hasn't got any super powers, is in any way justified. I think it ruins the whole claim that theyre trying to make something more positive for girls...
Also, like how you call her 'blue balls' sometime.

  • @RebeccaGunn
    @RebeccaGunn 4 года назад +13

The problem is Bluebell is less of a character and more of a caricature - if the moral was "different girls like different things and that's ok" then why is Bluebell written as a virtual strawwoman or as a crude stereotype of what the writer might consider to be a woman who likes maybe more traditional gender norms? I mean of course the girls are right in this situation in the face of a character that's so eager to throw herself down for a prince, but that's why the clearly revised-last-minute ending is so bad. There's 0 dimension to Bluebell other than being a set up damsel-in-distress trope personified so the girls can beat her world-view faster than they get beaten in most episodes of this reboot. She pretty much exists to be wrong because the writer couldn't imagine a situation where a person like Bluebell would be right (and thus writes the ending in the most spiteful fashion to boot)
When I say a person like Bluebell, I mean someone who fancies finding the right person and settling down, knitting, cooking ect. Not insane woman throwing herself into danger in the hopes Mr Right shows up (I think we call all agree this is a bad idea). Many people like the idea of eventually finding their life partner, that doesn't mean everyone with that wish is just sitting around or obsessing purely on ways to make your "prince" appear asap. It's okay to have that just....don't sit around waiting for it or trying to force it to happen.

I have been enjoying the reboot reviews for this show for sometime now, and do hope you continue to cover it. It's nice to have a reviewer who doesn't sit there screaming about what's bad about the situations presented in the show, but rather explain what's wrong with each point in a calm collective manner. It helps get a nice perspective on the show, so I hope you will cover it until the end.
...which hopefully will be soon. Because it's tragic to see the IP dragged through the dirt in such terrible hands. These reviews are really the only good thing to have come out of the reboot, and to find you as a reviewer who takes things in a refreshing manner. Keep up the good work c:

  • @Aster_Risk

This bothers me. It feels like they're going for a feminist theme and criticizing the actions of other girls while telling them not to criticize the actions of other girls. I am all for allowing people agency and respecting their decisions, but they didn't make the princess do something silly or stupid. She tried to repeatedly throw herself into a volcano. If the volcano had been used more a a metaphor, that could have helped the message of this episode, but they didn't do that. The volcano part was played straight. If the Powerpuff Girls saving Bluebell from killing herself isn't girls looking out for other girls, I'm not sure what is any more.

For a moment, I thought YT had struck again and took down the review but yeah, as much as I like the first version you did the new cut cleans it up and cuts out some of the fat. So it shows improvement on your part in how you view these episodes.
This story still sucks though because it focused way too hard on trying to make a point when it's just boring. The older show would have had some sort of 'point' but had fun with it. I can honestly say the only parts I liked were Blossom being creeped out by the wall-eyed lizard combing her hair for no reason. As for Bluebell trying to kill herself I get what they were going for; they were trying to show that in most cases the hero would swoop in and save the damsel at the most dangerous at times and Bluebell was trying to trigger that with the joke being the girls were just doing their JOB to save her and how aggravating it was for them to repeat it over and over again because in the end, Bluebell just did it to get boned.
Hell, there was an episode of the 80s Zelda cartoon that had something like that happen where one of the baddies turns into a princess in order to turn Link into a toad but before it happens and she can plant the kiss, ZELDA comes in and saves her and the girls 'Beautiful maidens are supposed to be saved by hansom men, NOT other BEAUTIFUL MAIDENS!' As cheesy as that show was, it played with the set up of how the baddie was using a trope in order to get what she wanted (in this case, to turn Link into a frog) and showed how pissed Zelda was when she was DOING HER JOB TO PROTECT PEOPLE.
Sadly, Bluebell has none of the charm of that. Even as a joke character she's just not....well, she's just not written well and she doesn't work because nothing actually happens to her. Her 'toughen up' moment isn't really awesome because she's still the vapid asshole she was and they really don't play that up either. Like in most cases, an asshole character would be played up and we're not supposed to have sympathy for them but instead rather we're supposed to laugh at them or actually go 'Aaaaay, I get ya man' but there's nothing with that when Bluebell is concerned. She's just empty and the writers attempt to use her as a device to say 'girls can do anything' doesn't work because again, nothing is really done.
I think the message would have done well had one of the girls been roped more into this, in this case Bubbles who at the end is CROWBARED into the message as if we're supposed to feel that she's felt bad for not being 'strong' like her sisters, despite the fact that this problem is never brought up in the episode. It would have been a little better had Bluebell showed up and she was more like Bubbles in terms that she was airheaded but her heart was in the right place and as such, Bubbles gets along with her. We can cue in either Buttercup, Blossom, or BOTH and have them counter their behavior and say that being frilly isn't strong and in order to be a real hero they (Bubbles and Bluebell) have to be EXACTLY like them, throwing away their own personal likes in order to be a 'real female hero' At the end, Bubbles and Blue could have to save the two but in their own way all the while showing that just because a girl likes pink or isn't loud or is shy doesn't make her any less of a good person or does not omit her from being a hero. This was the type of message they were trying to say but they never gave it off because none of these factors were ever brought up.
The only thing that was brought up was making fun of Princess cliches with a bad attempt at dismantling them and showing the prince/guy out to be a slacker. It just wasn't done well at all and in the end it had no message despite everyone saying there was one. It's just a bad episode.

I would have done this episode very differently. First, instead of the in-poor-taste suicide joke, I would have scenes where the girls take Bluebell across Townsville and show her various women, such as career woman, hard working moms, and volunteer workers, to show her that she can stand on her own without her princess duties weighing her down. During this, the dragon will repeatedly try to abduct Bluebell but is stopped again and again. Then, close to the end, the dragon decides to kidnap the girls to have the princess come to him. He does this by using a magic spell that completely immobilizes the girls, which would make sense because, much like Superman, the PPGs should be at a disadvantage against magic. Bluebell follows the dragon, kicks the dragon's butt, then, as a cool twist, the dragon turns into the prince Bluebell was talking about this whole time. The dragon prince was after Bluebell this whole time because only a Princess could break the spell on him. The prince apologizes to Bluebell and the girls for his actions and surrenders himself to Bluebell, Bluebell thanks the girls for inspiring her and being there for her, and Bluebell and the prince then leave Townsville to return to their land. Why couldn't we have that instead of this episode?

I've rewatched this review as of recently because I originally thought that you took the suicide stuff too seriously (The princess being an idiot rather than intentionally suicidal) but some of the points you've made are valid and I like that you brought up that there was more to it that rubbed you the wrong way (How the ending botches the moral and gives the impression that the writers didn't give this script several rewrites). While I'm still not big on your content (even though it is some of the better content I've seen from the cartoon community as of recently), I have to admit I took your video the wrong way the first time. Its a good video, but here is a relevant/irrelevant comment.
Bluebell herself is another indication of the reboot's creators being hypocrites. They cut out Ms. Bellum for appearing to be a sex symbol (but actually being a strong, woman character), and here they are showing a woman who has thicker thighs and hips then Ms. Bellum and possibly Bianca Bikini. When she looses the dress, we see her curves clearly and I doubt that here figure is do to her bloomers.
On a side note, the older women and girl designs vary too widely and can appear really out of place. Bluebell has a design that is close to an actual woman while Ms. Keene has no chest or curve in her first appearance in the reboot. I like it when characters are distinct and remember-able, but some consistency in common characteristics found in humans should be present.
Lastly, if you remove the magical world aspect of the episode, Bluebell would have looked completely delusional and crazy, which would have made a more interesting twist to the episode in my opinion.

SAD Fact is they ripped off this episode of the ReBoot of The Powerpuff Girls from the Disney 2007 movie Enchanted

Is it just me, or does the princess look like she's trying to be Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Princess Peach all at once...? (In terms of character design, I mean.)

Also, if you absolutely must make Buttercup sing, at least make it metal. Fits her better.

This was a better review of this episode, great job Shadow ^^ I had mixed feelings on this episode as a whole, especially with Bluebelle. For season 2 that is started to air, I think you should do reviews for season 2 as a once a month, since you got some more season one episodes to do ^^

Thanks for the suggestion! Yeah I'm thinking of slowing down on the reboot episodes so I can cover other things as well, I've wanted to talk about other shows for a while now so that's not a bad idea.

I can't believe Star vs got censored because of LGBT kisses which is technically a show for TEENS and the Moms didn't rage about this.

Krystal Huntress At least that one had subtlety to it. The first time I saw it, I didn't notice the same sex couples kissing, my attention was completely directed at the main characters.

Goin Game Crazy That was the 90's, people weren't so offended by everything back then.
