One of the most enjoyable surf fishing trips I ever had was in the surf just to the east of the calcasieu ship channel. One of those very rare days where green water had come in all the way to the shore and I cast net for finger mullet. Caught a bunch of nice trout and smaller reds. Tore them up until the dolphin came to feed and play. Haven’t finished the video yet but this reminds me so much of that day. Great video.
Just found your channel. Very nice gear and you show well taught/learned experience. Look forward to following you. I am out the West Coast. Things are a bit different, but still fishing. Good Luck
Great day fishing! Suggestion to help Don't take it personally When you know you are going to release a big fish, don't drag it across the sand when landing it. It removes the protective slime from the scales.
I knew you had to be careful with speckled trout because of their slime. I never knew red fish could have similar problems. Thanks for letting me know.
Nice catches dude only question is do u stand far away from water for a reason or jus don’t think bout it? I would think when u hook up u would atleast walk to the water. But sick video
The water is really nice. You spread those rods too far apart, fishing by yourself. It's better to keep your rods closer but toss them out in a widespread. Send the middle rod out straight in front, the left rod out 30 to 45 degrees and the right rod, same as the left. That way if you get two or all rods going down at the same time, you can be close enough tonhandle them and reduce the risk of losing fish.
@lynkpaul2171 You must have not been surf fishing very much. I fish the Texas surf in practically the same manner. You want a minimum of 30-50 feet spacing to avoid getting tangled with the other lines. A 5 foot shark or a large jack crevalle will run back and forth or pretty much any way they want to go. You also want to spread out to mark your claim so others won't set up right in your lap. I always set my farthest poles first to stake my claim. People will come out of the woodwork if they hear the surf is on fire.
Gafftops, even hardheads, are excellent! The key is to bleed the fish by cutting off the tail and putting them back in the net or, on a stringer. They taste even better than freshwater catfish if you bleed them, I kid you not!
@@SouthWestLouisianaSaltwater that’s right but my question is what was the other leader you were using that caught all the fish? Does the cannon rig usually work for you?
@@SouthWestLouisianaSaltwater Interesting! Thank you and I enjoy your channel. I grew up in Port Aransas Texas and fish the Texas coast. I’ll definitely need to bring my gear the next time I visit Louisiana.
I just put up a video going over most of my gear and rigging if you're interested. The beach I was on is a section of beach between Holly Beach and the Calcasieu Ship Channel.
The bait was landing in about 4 to 6 feet. I'm not 100% on it being a female. It's just that it's more likely to be a big female. Female Red Fish grow to that size faster than males.

Haha
I don't think I would ever release a speckled trout
They all get cooked

When you are fighting a fish in the surf you do not want to be right at the water's edge great question though
@@jearredbryan4472 thanks dude I did not no that haven’t gone surf fishing yet so just watching as much as possible

I prefer a longer spread. Even with a properly setup spread, I've had big fish tangle me up.

Have you ever eaten gafftop? I have not but heard/read that they are kind of tasty. Never hardheads though.
I have not, but I do hear it's good.

Where did you get the live croaker at you buy them?
I catch them myself the night before usually.
@SouthWestLouisianaSaltwater where at been looking to catch some for bait myself
The lake charles sea wall or calcasieu point
So nothing picked up the 8 n Bait… what was the other leader? And is that normal?
If you're talking about the one I was using for the live bait, I believe it's called a cannon ball rig. I use it for live and smaller cut bait.

What is the cover thing you’re using on your left index finger?
It's a single finger casting glove. It's used to protect your finger from the braid when casting heavy weight.

Thank you as well. I'm glad you enjoy the channel.
What beach are you on? Did you have your weight fixed or did it slide? What size circle hook? Details man, details !!!

🤠 Howdy from SE Texas. Your channel came up on my YT. Subscribed and 👍
Welcome to the channel, and thanks for the comment.
Where exactly are you fishing?
It's a section of beach between Holly Beach and the ship channel jettys. It's a protected sea bird nesting site, so no vehicles are allowed.
👍
What kind line is that I like it ? I just subscribed.
If you're referring to the orange line, it's Beyond Braid 8x. I'm trying it out for the first time.
How deep are you trying to fish?
Gorgeous fish. You are busy.
How do you know it's a girl?
The bait was landing in about 4 to 6 feet. I'm not 100% on it being a female. It's just that it's more likely to be a big female. Female Red Fish grow to that size faster than males.

Don't get it too far. Shark are feeding
