😊 “I have experienced a lot of decluttering regret. And I’ve decided I’d rather live with the regret than live with clutter.” (Dana K. White) Do you agree with this quote?
I was barely 19 years old when I discovered minimalism, my grandparents had just died and I was selected to be in charge of emptying their house (my house) I was raised by them. I purged many things in a hurry, I don't regret most of them, but there is one in particular that I often think about, one of my books, a beautiful edition by Guillermo Cabrera Infanfe, accidentally went into the huge pile of books that I had to purge, I thought, I haven't finished reading it, I have to let it go, etc. There were many mixed feelings afterwards, my local bookstore did not pay a fair price for any of my books, I did not have space to put them and in the midst of crying and frustration I left them there, it is one of the most painful things I have ever done and sometimes I wish go back to that moment and not do it. I gave away almost 400 books, but the best ones went to the local bookstore. I wish I had known so many things, but I was only 19 years old.
I miss video stores too. We’ve kept our Blu-ray player which plays dvd’s too as well as all our videos. I don’t find that I know what’s even really out anymore as everything is across too many streaming services. I’m fortunate that our libraries here carry dvd rentals - for free. So I go and browse the shelves. Not the same as Blockbuster, but it’s still something.
That’s such a good point, libraries are such a great resource! 😊 I completely forgot that our main library has some DVDs too, I will go check those out. We have the same problem here in Finland, there are just too many streaming services to keep up with.
Bonjour, merci pour votre vidéo apaisante. Desencombrer apaise l'esprit. Vos magasins d'occasion sont magnifiques en Finlande ❤, il y du choix 👍❤️Votre tableau est magnifique 🖼♥️Votre chat est adorable 🐱🩵Bon après-midi 😘
Yes I do regret decluttering some wool ,I was being so brave ! The next day l went out and rescued it and started making a blanket with it. But anything else I do not regret
That’s such a lovely story! 😊I love that you rescued the wool and turned it into something beautiful. A blanket sounds so cozy and meaningful... what a perfect way to give it a second life!
I have been frustrated sometimes when I decluttered something and couldn’t find a suitable one when I needed it a bit later. Like a rug or things like that. Not regret exactly. I love changing things so I’ll take things to the thrift shop and bring different things home from there. It’s like a rental for me. lol. Keeps it from being so serious.
I think carefully before I declutter something. Regret eats me up from inside, and I'd rather live with what other people may call clutter than regret.
Thrift stores in Finland are nice and organized. Unlike the ones here in the states. 😢 I’ve regretted donating some things but I think this is common among all. Seasons change just as our desires and tastes. You quickly get over it, if not you try and replace the item if possible.
I live in the US and I have several awesome thrift stores near me that are clean and very well organized. The storekeepers take pride in taking good care of the stores and it shows. It’s unfortunate they aren’t all that way everywhere though.
It’s true, not everything is available online, for music as well. Friends of mine had a massive collection of indie Canadian folk music but their house had a major flood so they lost everything. They’re pretty sad about that. I still have my VCR and DVD player. I borrow a lot of DVD’s from the public library and VHS’s can usually be found inexpensively at charity shops. The latest VHS I bought was Laurel & Hardy, it’s hilarious! When I am done with VHS tapes, I donate them back to the charity shop.
I sort of regret getting rid of our dvd vhs combo, my husband was so mad! lol but honestly we didn’t use it! Viewing this made me nostalgic for the old days. Thanks for sharing this. Greetings from Las Vegas 🇺🇸
I saw on the cover of an Oprah magazine a few lines she said and it kind of went like this: “ if you can’t love it, eat it, wear it, sleep with it, gain strength from it, make peace with it or find joy in it, then the time has come to let it go.” I keep that in mind when I’m decluttering a basement, closet, backyard garden shed, or any cupboard or drawer in my home. If it went missing would you miss it, if it broke would you be sad about it, or if you decide to move away, would you pack it up and take it with you to your new home and let it be in your new chapter in your life, if you answer no, then let it go. Yes, I’ve had some regrets but that’s life. We learn, but if you are in the right state of mind when you declutter or let things go, you will have fewer regrets in my opinion and experiences.
I decluttered my 250 CD collection 10 years ago and I have no regrets. It was bulky and my musical tastes have evolved. I have no trouble to find my music on line now.
I agree. 70% of times hen we want to watch something in line there is an issue. So i buy the dvd of the movies i adore, even second hand, this is complete freedom and availability 😊
I threw away a rustic hanging cradle once our babies outgrew it. I later saw one just like it in the anthropology museum in Mexico City. The one thing I am glad I kept is the Salton yogurt maker we received as a wedding gift over 45 years ago. I hadn’t used it in decades, but since the pandemic lockdown in 2020, I’ve been making yogurt twice a week!
That’s such a smart way to store your DVDs, compact and practical! 😊 Sounds like you’ve found a way to keep enjoying your collection without the clutter!
Yesssss❤ and I have chosen a peaceful minimalist village life though I was born and brought up in a city.... Our thinking is so similar..giving preferences to our inner call and need. Sister love from India.... 😊
I kept my DVD collection because I had a lot of 90s indie films and more obscure shows and things. I keep them all in a large DVD binder so they take up very little space. I also have a small portable DVD player that goes also in a case. Both are easily tucked away until I want them. I think I burned out on streaming. If I watch anyone other than RUclips, it's usually a DVD. I like going to the library and picking from there limited options😂
We had the same in the UK, Blockbusters, rewind your video, sweets to buy... 😊 Its all at our finger tips now isn't it. Once decluttered the SOFTEST teddy bear... always wish I hadn't... but everything else...no regrets 😊
I regret donating the formal china I selected as a teenager. My mother-in-law gave me the family Desert Rose collection, and I've felt obligated to use it for decades of special occasions. Because I wasn't using my own china, I tearfully gave it up. Since then, I've decided I don't like the Desert Rose for autumn & winter. But my perfect china is gone forever. So I'm looking to replace it with something suitable.
We did the same decluttered the dvd player and dvds also only to find a movie we wanted to watch was only on dvd. We have since repurchased a dvd player and a few dvds. The movie in question in case anyone wonders was 28 days later.

No, I’d rather be selective, but keep all the things that meant so much that I bothered to bring it into my life.

You went through so much at such a young age. And you had to make decisions under incredible pressure 😔❤
I have heard someone say, you did the best you could with the information you had at that time. ❤
Rebuy the book. It will erase the regret.

Yes, I was going to suggest the library, also. I live in an area with several libraries and one in particular has a wonderful dvd collection.

That’s such a great way to look at it! Treating the thrift shop like a rental! 😊👍

Ooo, very well said, I have precisely the same feeling.
Exactly. Ditto.

True, thrift stores in here are usually well organized. I guess almost everyone has decluttering regrets😊

Yes, there are a lot that are very clean and organized. Others not so much. It really depends.

Laurel & Hardy is such a classic 😊 Wonderful that you donate VHS tapes back when you’re done! ❤️

That's one beautiful thrift store.😃🤩. .I still prefer to play CDs in my car...that way there's no fumbling around for playlists on my phone.
That sounds wonderful! ❤️
At least here in the states the Mad About You full episodes are currently on RUclips. 💜

That thrift shop could be here in Canada, same kind of merchandise.
I think everyone would have a declutter they regret, we aren't always as clever as we think we are, but we live and learn I guess xo

I'll never declutter my favourite DVDs!! Streaming is unreliable!
