  • FGTH - Tears For Fears & Sal Solo from Classix Nouveaux on Saturday Superstore, March 23rd 1985. Recorded by me on Sony C6 MK2 using SKC L750 Beta video tape. There are little bits of this elsewhere on YT, but this is the full appearance by FGTH

Ironic the man interviewing them is the same man that banned the playing of their first single on BBC Radio 1

Yeah, its kinda odd. They must have remarked on it at the time.

@@ScottishTeeVeethe clue is in the competition question they set. TBF the decision to ban Relax helped to propel it and the band to global success so I think in a way Read did them a massive favour. There certainly doesn’t seem to be animosity between them in the interviews.

the 80s looked so much more real, real people having real conversations and debates and having different opinions without chopping eachothers heads off.

Live TV was better than today's heavily edited quick soundbites rehearseased to within an inch of thier lives stuff.
But plenty of fakery and bullshit back then as well, this band when they played live, actually sang along to a backing track

And yet at the time all the cool for school brigade was moaning that the only 'real' thing about the 80s was The Smiths lmao. Little did we know just how shite things could get.

I used to watch Saturday Superstore as a child and remember some episodes. This is March 23, 1985, and I'm certain on the next show March 30, 1985 there was a song called Smelly Feet and I'd like to hear how it goes, and see who sang it.

Mike Read the presenter here was the first one to say he would not play the song Relax anymore on his radio show in 1984. Then the BBC followed. The rest is history.
It's surprising to me that the lads are on his children's program here.

I guess the band realise that Mike did them a great service by banning the song, maximum free publicity for them and their song. Mike as a music nut, may have enjoyed the fact that he is pulled into music history for the ban. It's nice to see that there appears to be no animosity between the band and Mike, he even makes a joke about Relax at 2:21

Apparently holly Johnson has said that it wasn’t Mike who banned the record it was his producer who decided to drop it. It was a good P.R. move by ZTT director of records Paul Morley who said the record was banned although the record wasn’t actually played that morning when it was decided to drop it, by saying the record was banned only helped the record push up the charts, it was the BBC that actually banned the single but Mike got the blame.

Answer of the question Who banned Relax : Mike Read, presenter of this show himself. How did they reconcile?

The act of Read banning relax brought FGTH the kind of publicity money cant buy and propelled the song to become a million seller. This clip is a year later and Saturday Superstore was a huge show in its day, literally everyone who was anyone in 80s pop music appeared on this show at least once. I mean just in this clip you have two of the biggest bands of the decade on the same edition.
