More than just lucky! In fact your clip reminded me of one of the most unlucky train clips i've seen on YT. A crowd gathered waiting to film the Flying Scotsman coming through.......only to have a Virgin passenger train wipe out the view as it passed by!
There was once a Deltic hauled service between Doncaster and Hull. It came through Thorne just after 10pm and if I were still awake I would lie in bed, excited child I was then and listen to that amazing thrum as it accelerated from Thorne junction toward Goole. Awesome sounds and it has struck with me ever since.
As a young lad Welwyn North was my local station , lived up the hill at Harmer Green, circa '65 onwards Spent many glorious hours up in the signal box sharing sandwiches and the odd slice of lovely apple pie my mum would make with the signalman, and learned much, that was back in the heyday of the Deltics and it was the joy of my life when they came thundering through, you never forget that unique sound, it's infectious. A group of us young lads would spend hours t'other side of the station messing about, and one regular spotter whom we called 'big bloke' who rode a scooter who passed the time of day with us. What innocent wonderful days they were, travelled all over the country alone spotting, i wish youngsters of today could have such simple joys where no one worried about the things which infect our lives now. And what nice people the station and signal staff were, putting up with a little lad who loved the railways. Can spill the beans about being allowed in the signal box as anyone involved would be long retired or passed.
Really great memories Lew, i was a Shunter at Stoke Gifford, now Bristol Parkway, and my young Son just 11, would travel up to York on his own using his travel pass, and come home late and show me all the Locos he had spotted, Severn Tunnel Junction too, great experience. He's 42 now and still talks about it and laughs. Todays kids are missing out on so much reality.
Remember seeing a Deltic & an A4 Gresley Pacific passing from opposite directions on the Welwyn Viaduct from the top deck of a 716 (?) bus returning home after an afternoon's shopping at the then Welwyn Department Store in the school holidays. The Viaduct was then free of overhead electrification gantries. Elderly gent' opposite explained how fortunate it was to have avoided wartime bombing. He went on to explain about a saddle plan that would widen the Viaduct to 4 tracks.Never got the whole story... he got off at The North Star
Deltics were doing 100 mph each and every day along the ECML between KX, Edinburgh and Leeds until they were withdrawn from service. I should know I used to drive them.
Hello there Ray do you know what powered the Deltic, are the diesel eletric , they can do some speed , theres alot of moving parts singing a merry tune on the tracks as she trundles down the country
Lovely shot, effort paid off. You're wrong about 95mph mind. A very experinced train timer on board logged the whole run from Edinburgh and she was doing precisely 100mph in your shot - you can hear the driver ease off as the ton is reached. Brilliant and thanks for posting this.
Its the vibration of the rails, it's like a zapping sound as the train approaches As i lived next to the WCML I used to think it was the overhead wires!
Very good video :-). I say!!!! :-O :-O :-O :-O. The BR class 55 "Deltic" diesel locomotive surely was speeding right past Welwyn North Railway Station :-O :-). It certainly was speeding right past that one particular station :-). Have a nice evening :-). From Foxy :-).
I was there for the return of d9000 rsg coming through the gasworks tunnel on the second attempt after the oil fire in her exhaust cut the first run short I was gutted but got to finally see her then 9009 at east lancs love em nice video mate
Think I gave a Like a few years ago but I deleted it after having a bad hair day as I did with all my Likes all 1000+ of them 🙄🙄 Well I want to put this one back Alycidon is one of the most legendary locomotives going it was a CD called Diesels Through The Decades that made me a fan of this engine!! 😅
WOW almost ruined!!! I wonder if he waited a few seconds longer for you to film? like to think, but prob not. and yes for sure CWSteam, I did the return journey of a steam special behind a deltic def max the speed limit over 100mph. a long time ago but think was settle carlisle return back to carlisle mainline route... I think??? def bloody fast.... sooo cool
cont....To CWSteam.... I recall a long steady downhill section of 125max speed limit and am sure we nailed it!!! there were prob only 6 or 8 coaches too!!! check out wiki for class 55 an see what it says. Im gonna do it now and hope i didn't just dream it all.....!!! ;)
Because british rail beat the crap out of them until they were too expensive to repair but I'm glad to have seen these machines in action on the east lancs railway and got to see the deltic deliverance both when d9000 caught fire and the second when she made it omg what a sight that was coming g through the gasworks tunnel
Blôódy CWR (continuous welded rail)!! Spotters/film makers/viewers today are 90% robbed of the excitement I enjoyed as a youngster. No “clickerty clack” of coach wheels every sixty feet (every 24 sleepers), no loose fishplates rattling as the train passes. No deafening noise and ultimate satisfaction from the train passing into the night. Just one short burst of “white noise” and that’s it! Shameful.
9 carriages (64ft 6in each) makes just over 580 ft. They pass in 4 seconds on the video. It's a simple calculation to get more or less exactly 100 mph! :)

The driver held it off for me, I turned round when it was stopped and the driver gave me the thumbs up. It was very lucky I was in the right place.

what a top guy!
Yeah he was a good man holding off for you. Hope he’s still well 👍🏻
That slow moving unit at the end had perfect comedic timing I think.
Hey, at least it had the courtesy not to ruin his shot
“Progress”.
That difficult second album.
Love how the Sprinter limps off almost apologetically afterwards! Magnificent!

Infectious it certainly is if you ever come across a CD called Diesels Through The Decades listen to Track 11!!

great comment from you man fantastic

Great shooting. A moment in time that would have otherwise been lost forever.
Deltic... The only non-steam engine I have ever liked. Saw them in their heyday. Can still feel that rumble!
Me too. That distinctive burble is remarkable, and recognisable.

Awesome! The singing of the rails...the anticipation and then...aaaah .deltics forever!
Cracking shot mate! 100 mph was standard for the Deltics in their heyday so its great to see one doing the ton - fantastic and thanks. Ken
It was possible for them to reach 105 mph downhill.
@@Glenn1967ful ...and the rest, Glenn. I had 110 out of Tulyar on the flat in 1981, as best I could tell from milepost timings.
With 3300 hp under the bonnet from its two Napier Deltic engines also with a top speed of over 100 mph... Lovely Jubbly...
Nice camera work, excellent locomotives, great video.
Wow, I didn't know they were capable of reaching 100 mph, 👍
They sure could shift on long straight stretches of line.
These are the business & they go like the clappers 🇬🇧👏
Deltic comes storming though at full pelt, then in comes the little Sprinter. :3
Built by Lancashire lads, for 'Yorkie' blokes to play with. Now that ain't fair, fellas'!
DELTIC = brute force, my fav train.
Absolutely brilliant...what a locomotive. Thanks for posting. Thumbs up for RUclips, so we can enjoy this.
Glad you enjoyed it
The bathos of the trundling multiple unit at the end is almost unbearable.
Ha, ha, yes isn't it just.
question.... what makes that pinging noise you can hear on the lines seconds before the loco hits? always wondered
Vibrations shooting along the rail as it flexes under the train.
Its call gauge twanging
Its the vibration of the rails, it's like a zapping sound as the train approaches As i lived next to the WCML I used to think it was the overhead wires!
Such a beautiful machine
That sound, there is nothing else like it.
tttthhhhhhhrrrrUUUUUUUUUMMMMMmmmmmmmmmm
Interesting anti climax with the EMU slinking into the station almost unnoticed and unheard.
my home station saw that site most days,,,, miss it
Like a mythical beast belching fire (Well diesel fumes) as it returns to hell sucking you down with it! Shit iv had too much scotch!
Majestic
Brilliant, great post!!
Could you imagine if that Sprinter had gone just 20 seconds early!
It’s not a sprinter. It’s a Class 317
Nice night shot- good video work
See my post above. Deltics were doing 100 mph every day of their service.

Very nice! On a flyer, well the unit driver holding off.
Awesome clip! Timeless!!
Poetry in motion,great clip !
Wow how close was that to getting bowled??? Liked. Mike
someone else said it was 100mph, I'll update the title.
I thought Deltic was light blue when I saw it in 1960. Was it a C0C0 ? Memory fades.
You might be thinking of DP1 Deltic Prototype. Thats light blue. Deltic is just a nickname
There;s several terms I don't know: CoCo, BoCo, CoCo A1AA1A
awesome! and nearly blocked by the other one! lucky jim

Beautiful!
+MultiMapping yeah, who would have thought a diesel could look cool
Aye, The great north road is the happening place this week.
nice to see no angst-loco on the back.
Because it's already a diesel
I believe it was named after a racehorse that won the Derby in the thirties, possibly owned by the Queen mother.
It's a compelling shot

s brenan The driver did wait for me, he gave me a thumbs up as he passed.
s brenan Thanks for replying. Having looked about a bit i understand now that the 'Deltic's were more than capable of reaching 100mph.
Great shot!
That First emu that leaves sounds like a A60 Met Line train.
Great catch. Liked.
Fantastic! lucky timing with that unit, could have ruined the shot otherwise lol
Why did they even take those deltics out of service ?
Because british rail beat the crap out of them until they were too expensive to repair but I'm glad to have seen these machines in action on the east lancs railway and got to see the deltic deliverance both when d9000 caught fire and the second when she made it omg what a sight that was coming g through the gasworks tunnel
....because the 125 came along, would be the most likely answer. They go alot faster than the Deltics.
I do prefer steam, but by god are deltics beautiful

amazing! who needs electrification!
Good video
Napier made these great Deltic engines and they were powerful, reliable, tough & quiet. They were all scrapped.
No, 6 of the 22 still exist
Same engine used in the '...ton' class minesweepers!
Still in use in the "Hunt" class minesweepers

That was never 100 mph.
it was, timed it and confirmed from someone on board.
100 mph my ass
I didn't know the Deltics' could run that fast, i like the class 55s, but i wouldn't go down to station to see them, its just not the same as steam!
this is nowhere near 170kmph 🤣
It was confirmed by the driver later that week it was 100MPH.
