So, Alsatian dog trainers always use german, and they say the dog understands it better. Scientists have proven that life experience can change dna and new understandings about the world get entered into instinct. Stay with me, it all ties together. My dog, see, she was a baby but I couldn't get her to respond quickly to commands until I spoke french. She was bred in Quebec. She responded instantly to french! Now to my point. It's entirely possible that north american wildlife can understand native languages, at least a little, from tens of thousands of years living with native languages.

I always practice my ojibwe to animals (and plants)! I always try to greet them in the language when I see them!
its good practice bc they don't care if you're speaking really obvious sentences to practice (ex. "oh, you are eating grass by the tree") and it also feels really wonderful to speak to them in the language of our land.
like they have been mukwa and jiidamoo and waabooz around here longer than they have been bear and squirrel and rabbit. I get the feeling sometimes the land misses hearing the language so I speak what little I know to all of it.
I also have had deer react better when I greet them in ojibwe than in English? They seem to bolt in fright less.

Is Ojibwe and Anishinaabemowin the same thing? Some ojibwe guy told me they are calling it Anishinaabemowin now. I looked it up on google but it was just confusing, like all anishinaabe are ojibwe, but not all ojibwe are anishinaabe? or vice versa? Idk... I am just a white dude anyways so its not important to me though. I knew what wabooz is though, but I thought squirrel was ajidmoo, descends trees headlong...
Animals do learn human languages all the time tho, so it wouldn't surprise me if even descendants of animals feel familiar with the natural languages of the land.

    • @anangoohns
      @anangoohns Год назад +26

@@voidremoved so anishinaabe is the larger cultural group (made up of odawa, ojibwe/Chippewa, and potawatomi) and anishinaabemowin is the general name of the language IN the language, although you can specificy ojibwemowin, odawamowin etc. A lot of people use Anishinaabemowin referring to Ojibwe specifically simply bc its the most widely spoken/known and we're the largest of the 3 population wise. But the Odawa, ojibwe and Potawatomi languages are really close (nearly mutually intelligible, think like norwegian and swedish)
So all Ojibwe are Anishinaabe, but not all Anishinaabe are Ojibwe.
Let me know if that makes sense!
Also, yep! Thats indeed the same word for squirrel, just spelled different among different dialects bc there's not a completely uniform way of spelling across the language. Also dialect differences mean sometimes the pronunciations are a little different.

As for the bear memes recently, we caught a spirit bear (white bear, not albino) on a trail cam in Michigan's upper peninsula. About a week ago there was a report that it was killed, but a few days ago there were reports it might still be alive. Maybe it's a ghost bear now instead of a spirit bear.

As soon as we saw the picture of it, we knew people were going to try to kill it, especially since it's bear hunting season. Even the DNR asked that if a hunter did take it, which they hoped they wouldn't, please allow them to get a sample.

...i was hoping for a discount tho...

I watch you guys all the time basically doing my research on how to understand my sister in law’s family, who are half Native (Menominee), but who I think would rather be FBI (Full Blood Indian). I’m a quarter mutt (native) myself but NOBODY (not even me) can tell; I look completely Irish.
I’m interested in how Natives think because from conversations with my FBI brother in law, I can tell every day stuff is perceived very differently than I would have expected, which is so fascinating to me. I love to get him to talk about his tribe’s history and see the peace metals the government gave their elders 170 years ago when they took their land and created the area in 1854. The story is full of viewpoints and symbolism I would not have even thought of.
Your videos help me see what I’m blind to. Thanks, I appreciate that. That sounds deep but it’s really just the small things about a culture that once understood (like comic relief), help break boundaries.
    👍😎
PS - I didn’t know my Father’s mother who I’m told was Native. I don’t even know her name, only that it translated to “Bear foot”, which is what the family called her. I really don’t even know for sure what tribe she belonged to, which is why I have serious doubts if I have Native blood at all because honestly I have NO Native features (other than my temper and stubbornness, so I’m told). But that’s really not a factor in the least as to why I enjoy other Nations and their outlooks.

I hear you. My great grandfather was native, have a couple pictures of him and his mother. The family said she was Cherokee (but I swear that's what a bunch of white people say....). She's not on the rolls and her last name sounds French, so I was looking at some of the Canadian tribal info. My best guess is that she was a free spirit, doing her own thing. She lived much of her life in Baltimore. They mixed with German immigrants and Quakers. My mom has the face and dark shiny hair, me and my siblings, we got the Irish, like you. 🍀✌️😎

Your story sounds similar to mine in the nationality department. I personally think there could have been native in my tree but it doesn’t define me, rather it makes me more tolerant, if that makes any sense.
I really am just interested in how to better connect with my nieces and nephews who are half Menominee. They can be a little standoffish, especially around people who marry into the family. I’ve been their aunt for 40 years now and things are starting to get better but still, I’d like them to be more comfortable yet!
Their Father is one of the tribe’s elders and has been involved with helping guide their holdings (casino, land management, school, police force, etc). My youngest niece is a healer and very active within the tribe. All but 2 sibling (there are 5 total) have married within to another native, so their children are three-quarters now and for some reason the little kids seldom speak to me, which makes me sad….. but to be fair, they seldom see me too, so I think that’s more of a factor than anything else.
Bottom line, I watch these videos all the time. They are funny, interesting and they really do teach me stuff……I’m now obsessed with William Knifeman!! LOL
