I've never read this book, but I have watched the original Color Purple adaptation. That movie was difficult enough for me to get through. I don't know that I could take reading the book. I agree with you that 11 years old is too young of a reader for this material. As far as separating an author's work from their personal views, everyone has the right to weigh it out for themselves. Just because you like an author(or a comedian or a musician) for their work, doesn't mean that you agree with every viewpoint they express/action that they've taken. We are humans, not sheep. Although in the times we live in, it can be difficult to remember that.
