3rd Panzer Division. Diary Of A German Tanker. The Loss Of Tank Troops On The Eastern Front.

  • Today we are going to read a remarkable diary of a German tank crewman. He served as a feldwebel of the 3rd Panzer Division of the Wehrmacht, which was involved in the invasion of the Soviet Union. He wrote his entries in a very careful and meticulous manner. Through this, we will not only discover his opinion about the fierce battles in the Soviet Union and the hardships of the retreat from Moscow, but also have a closer look at the life of a German tank crewman. He wrote down details that I haven't read in other diaries, and it's very fascinating. Indeed, you begin to realize the seriousness of the situation of German troops fighting in the Soviet Union. The enormous losses of soldiers and equipment, impassable roads, overextended and overloaded supply lines for the armies, the partisan operations and the unbelievable cold - all of this was crushing the invincible army that had conquered Europe. The fact that the author of the diary, awarded the Iron Cross 1st class, had to drive a tractor instead of a tank, due to the lack of new tanks in the German army - indicates many things....

My father was there. 3rd Panzer group. Berlin Bears. Started out trained on a Kettenkrad. AS war progressed...he ended up as radio operator in back of half track as part of a probe unit. Same thing as many of you have said...it was hard to get him to talk about any of his experiences but he would open up every now and then. Never knew anything about his military Wehrmacht experience and it took almost two years to get his records from the Wehrmacht archives in Berlin. One thing the fascists were really good at...record keeping. These diaries are VERY real and explain much like my father did. So grateful for these videos

Wonderful watching, and many superb pictures I had not seen before, even if many were not connected with the exact time-frame. This was a triumphant German army in it's prime, slowly realizing "this was not France", but dealing with it in their inimitable Germanic fashion. They had already totally destroyed 3-4 Russian full armies thrown in front of them in the campaign season of 1941... but this was Russia: so much space and seemingly endless levies being raised. Equipment failures were a huge factor as the story makes clear. Hitler lost his biggest gamble of the war in front of Moscow that winter. By the time this brutal winter arrived in full force the incredible German Wehrmacht, the finest army seen since the days of Alexander the Great, looked like a failed and marooned Antarctica expedition in the swirling snows. The poor men (both sides).

Agree. Looking at these photos in concert with the diary, I get shivers down my spine knowing the conditions they fought in. The number of Russian soldiers they were fighting against, but did not have any clue as to just how many there ultimately were, the endless expanse, which would have made me wonder how many Russians were merely side-stepping the Wehrmacht's push forward in order to attack from their rear, and the climate conditions, which they had no idea on how bad it would get, or how ill-prepared they or their machinery was in functioning in it. One would think Hitler would have been advised of all this and thought twice about the entire operation, but even if he had, he thought providence was his and not Russia's. Would a sane and rational general have come to the same decision as Hitler?

Hitler was a fake name use by Alois when he changed his surname in court. Adolph was a demon possessed idiot at school - all Illuminati families are like this. Adolph was a quarter Jewish from the Rothschild's. Rothschild's name means Red Shield and the Baer family changed their name to the name of their bank hundreds of years ago. Sydney Australia man walked by their central bank and day and the drapes were open exposing the inside wall that had the Tots hold family crest painted on it. It is not a theory that the Rothschild's own all the central banks of the world. Adolph and Eva escaped Berlin by airplane and boarded a submarine in Spain to get to Argentina in late 1945. He died in 1968.

Special thanks to the veteran soldier sharing personal information/knowledge/entertaining. Pertaining to the disastrous failed blitzkrieg invasion of Moscow. Thru diaries & memoirs making this presentation more authentic and possible -! The original invasion commenced 30-days late. Due to Greece not being conquered by Mussolini's flunky armed forces. Like in (1936) Spain. Berlin postponed the invasion to take control of the situation in Greece. The above circumstances caused them the war. When a fierce/bitterly cold winter stopped them in their tracks.due to the delay.

at the start the narrator suggests that there weren't enough tanks for training so a "tractor" was used. Not a farm tractor. The heavy hauler was a tracked truck used to transport supplies, pull damaged tanks and train new drivers on these heavy haulers Once they mastered the tracked trucks then it was onto tanks. Damage to a tank tranny entailed a lot of repair time so they had the greenies start on tracked trucks.

I love your videos, they give a unique perspective of what the poor soldiers and civilians endured. I’ve watched since almost your first upload and from time to time rewatched from the beginning. I know Hitler was unconcerned about anything but victory but his generals must have known how big Russia was and how difficult it would be to resupply the armies, but did they sincerely expect so quick a defeat of the Soviet army that they considered the weather irrelevant? No winter uniforms, and then the rain causing glue like mud eventually changing to bitter cold. Was it hubris and overconfidence or did they waste their time trying to explain this to Hitler only to be replaced with YES man like Paulus? Hitler destroyed what was probably the best trained army ever! What a waste of lives! 15:56

@@asullivan4047 Under the terms of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, each side was permitted to form an inspection delegation to visit each others tank factories. In early 1941, the Russians visited a German factory manufacturing Panzer IVs, their latest version. The head of the soviet military delegation immediately protested to the Germans that they were not being allowed to see the German's latest tank models. When Guderian got wind of this, he immediately guessed that the Russians had a larger & heavier-armed tank than the Panzerkampfwagen IV. A similar German commission, around the same time, was shown a Russian tank factory in Moscow-at that factory, they were producing early models of the T-34. Somehow, this information was either ignored, mislaid or discounted. The next time the Germans became acquainted with the T-34 was in Lithuania on June 24, 1941.

My greatest suspicion with these diaries is that the soldiers always know the names of the villages and crossroads they are in. First off, I know the Germans had no maps, none, they just started out on a 1200 mile invasion to Moscow with no maps and veterans of WW1 were surprised when they came across large cities where none had been 25 years earlier. Secondly the names of the towns and villages would not be posted in German. Also keeping diaries is forbidden so that if captured they give no info so the writer would have to hide while entering info into the diary. And finally there was a war going on that most of us would be preoccupied with. These are the reasons I am suspicious, especially since recently famous diaries of german soldiers fighting in Stalingrad and used by Chuikov in his memoirs have proven to be Soviet fiction.

The 3rd panzer was suppose to march on Moscow, what the hell was it doing in Romny ...??? Hitler never understood what these guys were going through. they weren't chess piece on a board to be played with. Precious weeks wasted. Horrible weather, relentless Russians, breakdowns galore and constant attacks from Russian air force and artillery finally wore down the Wehrmacht so Barbarossa failed.

What can you say , a first rate documentary , the historical footage superb and relevant. So many docs keep showing Panthers , Tigers and later MK 1 Vs of later years. Not when Barbarossa took place. Kudos to this company and production , far better than anything Hollywood could produce when vehicles that didnt exist are always so prevalent. Would have liked to see more Soviet vehicles even if destroyed but l am sure the Germans probably captured Soviet propaganda films since theycaptured millions of their untrained ,ill led troops .

Read the books by Sven Hassel if you want to know the reality from the German side. He is a Dane who joined the German army and was only one of 3 survivors of his company.

WAR DIARIES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE READY TO SEE, HEAR & CONTEMPLATE: ONLY NOW AS AMERICANS DO WE SEE CORRUPTION & A GOV NOT UNLIKE GERMANYS, MEANING A GOV DEDICATED TO WAR! SO INTEREST IN WHAT MAY END UP BEING WW3 GETS PEOPLE CURIOUS! I THINK THAT HAS ALOT TO DO WITH INTEREST!
