  • This diary was kept by the battalion commander, which makes it especially valuable. These notes reveal the organization of the German defense, the supply of the army and the interrelationships among the officers. Also, he, as a battalion commander, often had to make manpower decisions as a result of the constant casualties amongst the officers. Altogether, this is a riveting diary of the everyday life of German officers on the Eastern Front.

Yes, the Ivan is told to go after those Fritz's with caps and stripes, if possible. They don't seem to be overly cautious about keeping down and out of sight, too much. The Peter Principle at work with the Darwin Award.

The Wehrmacht was overly dependent on horses for transport. They needed to be fed, housed and cared for just like a soldier needed his needs met. Their logistics suffered greatly due to inadequate motorized transport.

Horses made sense you try to drive through that snow and mud ! The main problem was no air power and no supply depots in the rear areas along the way as the army drove far into Russia. The Germans burned everything on the way to Moscow then in retreat there was no supplies for the army to forage in the rear areas nothing to eat for the men and horses to shelter just the mud and snow.

Germans were all with good schoolarization. Analphabetism was rare in Germany. Meanwhile, a great part of russians were not even able to write. Sad but true.
