It's actually true that the advent calendar originated in Germany! That's why it only has 24 doors because we celebrate Christmas on the 24th. I don't know if it's the same in the US but we have 24th which is Heiligabend (holy eve)/ christmas. After that we have the first Christmas day (25th of December) and the second Christmas day (26th of December). Usually you use those days to visit extended family or your partner's family. I really love that it's three days of Christmas instead of just one since there's more chances to celebrate with all of the family. Of course we limit the number of family we visit because of covid.
PS: the Niederegger mazipan I on of my favourite Christmas treats and a wink from Luke is the best compliment for our sweets I could have hoped for! :)

Growing up with a German mom in the US we do quite a few of those German traditions. We put some butter on the Stollen, and we have a lot of soft gingerbread treats. We also always get a live Christmas tree and burn real candles on it. And in Germany there are Christmas markets in each town that sell amazing treats and handmade goods. Germans know how to do Christmas the best in my opinion.

I'm so glad you guys are trying out fabric wrapping!! My family has bene doing it for about 3 Christmases now and it makes the whole wrapping process much easier (especially for the family members who aren't so good at wrapping in general!) When my mum first introduced it to my brother and I we were definitely skeptical about the actual unwrapping but we've found ways to die the bows (or peg bags) so that there is still an unwrapping element and the gifts are always more exciting than the wrapping anyway! If it is a big deal to the kids you can always wrap them in tissue paper! A lot of the time we wrap the gift in tissue paper (without tape) then put it inside the fabric wrap, this way there's still a crinkly unwrapping experience but it is waste free as tissue paper can be reused every year!
I've been thinking about suggesting this to your family for a while but so glad you discovered it anyway!

My family stopped wrapping gifts a few years ago. My mom and grandma sewed a whole bunch of fabric bags with fancy ribbons that we “wrap” presents in now. We still wrap gifts for the two little cousins in traditional paper because we think it is more fun for them, but all the older family members like that using the bags cuts down on clean up and lets us get into playing sooner.

You could try some food from Brazil!! It would be cool to see you guys try things from a south american country. Here, our Christmas is during summer, so that changes the vibe from northern countries entirely haha we celebrate christmas on the evening of the 24th and also on lunch time of the 25th. Our dinner is basically rice, turkey and farofa (some kind of toasted cassava flour mixture that brazilians are obsessed about) and what i think is the most different is that, for us, french toast (we call it rabanada here!) is a typical christmas dish that we eat as dessert or for breakfast. How we cook is: we dip our bread in milk (sometimes mixed with condensed milk), then dip it in beaten eggs, then deep fry it and, lastly, we dip it in a mix of sugar and ground cinnamon! It's delicious and you should definitely try it :) lots of love from Brazil and Merry Christmas!

Being from Germany I find it really cool that you try our stuff ❤️
Btw- not important but Plätzchen are pronounced sorta like this:
Pl - like the pl from the word place
ä - like just the a from apple
Tz - like the ts from etsy
Ch - difficult since English doesn't have that combo sound but sorta like the x from the word fox
en - like Ben without the b
+ we normally incorporate rum into stollen so Jessica was correct 👍 you soak all the fruit elements in rum for some time before incorporating it into the dough.

I love the idea of reusing fabric/baby blankets to wrap presents, in helping save the environment. If your kids don't feel as excited opening the present there is another alternative I've come across, it's dissolvable wrapping paper. It has the same feel and texture as normal paper, but it dissolves underwater. Great for an easy clean up as well. But loving your idea of recycling your baby blankets in such a creative way.

my girlfriend’s family is dutch and they celebrate st. nick! everyone in the family gets a different family member (kind of like secret santa) and you have to write a poem for the person that you get and create something to hold a new ornament for them. The box and the poem typically go together and are often funny or tell a memory that you have with that person or something important that is going on in their life that year!

As a Ukrainian Canadian we still do a lot of the old traditions, the most different being that Christmas Eve is our big deal day. We have 12 meatless dishes (perfect forJessica) representing the 12 apostles. We also have a spider ornament on our trees or one hanging from the ceiling (there are many folktales explaining this tradition). For dinner we always have an extra spot at the table for those that have passed on and no longer with us and a lit candle in the window to help them guide their way. We also carol before our meal and have a special blessing that the host says before we eat. We fling a spoonful of Kutya (one of the dishes, usually eaten first though it is sweet) to the ceiling and if it sticks there will be a bountiful. harvest for the year.

Same! I know they add quite a bit of extra work, but I'm glad that they bring it back here and there for special occasions!

Aww my favourite stollen! I was adopted into a Dutch family, we also have stollen for Christmas, we also would toast them ,not in a regular toaster but in a toaster oven so the marzipan doesn’t leak in my toaster. So yummy warmed and butter is always nice too!

Hey! I’m from Denmark which is right over Germany so we have some of the same traditions such as the advents wreath. But here in Denmark we also have some kinda special foods that aren’t eaten in many other countries. We have pork chips🥴 lol which is called flæskestegs chips in danish I personally really like those so I think y’all could try it! We also have a dessert called ris a la Mande which is a rice porridge with whipped cream and vanilla mixed into it and sliced almonds in it. Another tradition with the ris a la Mande is that you put a whole almond with the sliced almonds and then we eat it and the person that found the whole almond gets an almond gift lol it would be so great if y’all tried it.🙃
